@@RaiZRiZ I meant edition xx. Its warm and lackluster in terms of resolution, and you can clearly hear that when you try to eq anything above 4 khz the driver isn't capable. The ndh20 is warm, smooth , with bass emphasize and one sharp treble peak at around 11 khz. It sounds pleasing if you want to enjoy your music but it's not for intensive detail work. I used to work with video game sound effects, and I used tons of different professional headphones to get accurate representation of the sound plus, and also know if my recording equipments had any problems, buzz, background noise etc. And the ndh20 isn't a tool for that.

I bought the Sundaras (from Josh actually) with the intention of having them replace my Devas but I gotta say.. I like the wired Devas more. There's something the Devas do with the presentation of vocals that just works for me. It's still (shockingly) my favorite headset for vocals and strings. I don't understand the HiFiMan line up at this point. All I know is that the wired Deva seems like an incredible value given how luscious it makes vocals sound. Maybe there's something off with me, because I don't understand why more people don't herald it.
@letrieuphong4 жыл бұрын
I'm curious how would you compare DEVA to HE-400i 2020/old version in term of sound? Old HE-400i still remains one of my absolute favorite sound I've ever heard. I prefered it over HD800 even, but the pressure on top of my head was just too much with the old design. I might look into buying this new revision tho.
@dasninjastix4 жыл бұрын
@@letrieuphong I never had a chance to hear the 400i. I stayed away from HiFiMan initially because of their reputation for poor build quality. I went with the Deva as a cost effective introduction to Planars given the wired version is 80 dollars less than the Bluetooth ones. Plus open-back Bluetooth didn't make a lot of sense to me. I think it's fair to say the Sundaras get a lot of praise from the review community yeah? They seem to be a somewhat consensus price-to-performance headphone. The 400s seem to have fans and detractors, same with the 4xx. When the Deva was released it seemed like HiFiMan has re-engineered their build so it seemed like the best entry point for the headphone without spending Sundara money. For whatever reason they've ended up being my favorite headphones, but now I'm skiddish to recommend them because I don't see many people sharing my opinion. As compared to the Sundara I just think the presentation of vocals is better, sweeter, smoother. The Sundaras have a richer/thicker/weightier sound but the vocals are embedded in the rest of the music. With the Devas vocals are presented closer to you, and they're clean and clear but not so clean and clear that they lose their softness (?). I don't know, I'd love to know if the 5xx and the Deva are the same headphone because the only thing I can knock the Deva for is the headband. It can create a pressure point at the top of the head. It's well-padded but that's moot cause the even distribution of the padding creates the same pressure points.
@dasninjastix4 жыл бұрын
@Hersey Berry I don't necessarily agree with either assessment, either the Devas sounding more natural or the Sundara delivering more detail. The Devas can have a metallic timbre and I didn't hear the same with the Sundara. It's not ever-present but it can noticeable with certain sounds from time to time. The Sundaras (to me) seem a bit more balanced, they're the ones that seem to be more natural. The Devas sound.. I don't want to use flowery language, but they sound ethereal? I don't have the wealth of experience other reviewers do with Planars, so trying to determine what's an attribute of HiFiMan and what's an attribute of a Planar is a little difficult to deduce. I haven't seen a bunch of agreement on the Devas either, most reviewers seem to be a bit underwhelmed with them as a Bluetooth headset (understandable) and only a couple I've found speak to using it Wired. For me the Devas are consistently the most surprising headphone I own. From genre to genre, they sound consistently interesting. But I'd love to have broader contextual understanding for evaluating where they fit in general in audio. I had assumed the Sundaras would be a clear upgrade and that was a mistake on my part. I don't regret buying the Sundara, I see/hear their value. It's more so a matter (for me) of trying to understand what is preference, what is Planar, and what is HifiMan in all this. I think if I understand what makes the Deva sound so spiffy for me, it could save a lot of time, energy, and money down the line. It's a long shot, a lot of what can be learned with reviews is inference but you still assume the risk of not agreeing with reviewer or community assessment. I get that and accept it. But I wouldn't be evangelizing the Devas if I didn't think they were something special. Understanding why others may not see it that way is helpful. It won't ruin the headphone for me in the least. I'd just like to learn more is all.
@Zerviscos4 жыл бұрын
FYI, the HE-5XX is supposedly somewhat like a Deva. I can assume this is unit variance, planars have that common issue regarding tuning variance. But yes, the HE-5XX is a rebadged Deva.

"Crispy, clean sound, with a lot of space..." good, go on... "this is a relatively flat headphone when it comes to the dynamics" eh, nevermind.
@WeBuild4Life4 жыл бұрын
No! To me, that's perfect. I design and assemble bookshelf speakers and crossovers, and the flatter the better! Not everyone feels that way though, I don't believe speakers or headphones should add ANYTHING to the sound and be exactly how it was recorded. If the music studio recorded far away, and the headphones portray that, perfect. That's on them. I have the HE400i, haven't listened to the 5xx, but these just seem like a refresh on already my favorite headphone. I also much prefer the 400i over the 6xx (which i've listened to) but as he said, it's for those looking for what it provides, I listen to a lot of classical and jazz. I recommend the 6xx to all my friends, but I don't think they are a better headphone.

@@Ibr4-c Overall I would recommend it - great budget amp! Competition: Sounds identical to the JDS labs atom (similar price point) but the Spark can put out more power. I haven’t heard the new Schiit amp in the $100 price range but in sure it’s sonically comparable to the others. My use for the Spark: my headphones right now are the DT 770s, 250ohm variant (somewhat high impedance, they need an amp to sound great, I can’t just plug them into my phone or laptop jack and get good volume, clarity, and supple low end) so I decided I needed an amp with a decent amount of power. My IEMS are the Tin HiFi T4, they don’t need an amp to get good volume but they benefit from the liquid spark anyways. Build: Metal construction, chassis is solid, switches feel great, volume dial is smooth. Rubber feet are good for decoupling from the surface you set the amp on, but you will have to hold the amp while you plug in and unplug headphones otherwise it will move. Chassis gets warm during prolonged use and when driving hight impedance headphones at substantial volumes. LED indicator is dim but perfect for late night listening. Not intrusive at all. During the daytime it may be difficult to see it as a reminder to shut the amp off though. Sound: Neutral, natural, clean and tight. Doesn’t add noticeable coloration or compression. Resolution and speed is great for the price and the noise floor is pretty much non existent. Wherever your headphones are supposed to sound like, that’s pretty what you’ll get! Cons: When the volume is low and I slowly increase it, the left and right channels don’t go up evenly. Sometimes the right channel becomes louder first and i have to keep turning the knob until they get even. But at normal, comfortable listening levels this isn’t an issue. Not a dealbreaker, but if you listen mostly on sensitive IEMS or at low volume with headphones make sure you have a DAC that you can fine tune the volume with. Also, the power cable feels cheap and thin. However, I haven’t had issues with it and the length is nice and long.

Seems like every review is "But not for bass heads" what audiophile or enthusiast level headphones are? Bass heads can't just be stuck with beats and skull candy.

Good point! Keep waiting for a decently priced planar that actually has low end. Ditched my 4XX's, 400i's don't seem like they'd satisfy, 560s either. Guess I'll stick with tube'd 6xx and my Meze 99's..

Bass heads should just buy the ifi Hip DAC for the Bass-X boost

Have you auditioned any audeze headphones? Unfortunately most 'bass-heads' prioritize merely quantity with no regard for quality. In my opinion audeze strikes a balance with authoritative, rich, warm bass that doesn't cross over into being muddy or boomy but your milage may vary.

@@dmtphone Came close to blindly getting the LCD-2C's but since it's covid season it's hard to try anything out and they're over 1K in Canada so went with the 99classics. Probably my next purchase though.

@@Jack-C4 I got an absurdly good deal on a lightly used pair of lcd 2 closed and they are truly impressive. Liquid platinum for balanced amplification and they really shine. Single ended (especially on the spark) I was less impressed. Bass was there but it overall lacked a sense of control and the detail wasn't as present as I would have liked. Push a lot of power through them and they are now my go to for a relaxed listed or when I need some extra bass. Reminds me of hd6xx for ease of listening but obviously in a different league. Hopefully I can snag a pure solid state with more power to see if the control and detail can be present but with the removal of the added tube sound. (Not that the tube sound is bad I quite like it but a more neutral reference point of amplification would be of benefit for comparing headphones and tracks/mixes)

How does it compare with the Sundara?
@mattrismatt4 жыл бұрын
I own the Sundara, which is somewhat dark, but with class-leading treble resolution. Josh said the 5XX is the opposite: bright, but a bit lacking in treble resolution. (Perhaps additional burn-in would help.)

It's the HIFIMAN HE 4XX all grown up I think the all black color is what the deva should have been because all black looks very high-end to me especially black and red now do a 400i 2020 vs hifiman he 5XX

@@mikediezel0923 Hi i got DT990 pro 250 ohm for $180 au that's $130 us , i was hesitant at first to get them, as people say they have to much treble, but I'm glad i did they have a huge soundstage, great imaging, clarity and supper deep bass the best bass in an open back I've heard ,i think people who dislike this headphone come from the land of vailed Sennheiser's i also own stax 007 and vintage stax and 15+ other headphones and these come the closest to stax under $200 also top choice for gaming too, you will hear sounds in your music you haven't heard before the only thing you need to do is burn them in for 100 hours and slightly bend the yolks out as out of the box clamp is fairly tight, pads are comfortable also sound even better on a tube amp.
