(Golden here) as a cheaper option I'd have picked the JDS element IV but it wasn't officially out until after this video was filmed so I couldn't mention it. For headphones honestly there have not been many this year I really was taken by. It was a bit of a slow year for really good releases imo

Yeah the difference in performance for dacs is such a scam. I know it’s a big word but the price increase for Dacs are definitely the least influential in your chain.

Interesting pick for headphone of the year. IIRC most reviews were not super positive. Good to see the general emphasize on build quality and comfort. This is what Zeos is unmatched at. Really conveying how it is to use a product. How it feels in your hands etc. If a headphone sounds good but is heavy or doesn't sit well on your head, it's not worth it imho.

It's good to see a nice range of products and price points (even if GoldenSound broke out of the bell curve 😂). It shows that great sound is more accessible than ever For me it's the Aune SR7000 closed backs. They fix a lot of Senn's old problems, while being the by far the most comfortable set I have worn in years - I have not compared to the 490 Pro, that would make a good review

I have the Sony XM5 for going out and about into the city because of the excellent noise cancelling and they are light and very comfortable. I’ve turned away from the Focal Bathy’s I purchased because the volume adjustments are far too coarse. There are only 16 volume increments and they either sound too low in volume or too loud to be usable and Focal have ruled out fixing this. I’ll admit they sound fantastic but in the UK Focal have told my dealership (Richer Sounds) that there will not be a replaceable battery service for them. Considering that these are active only headphones (where the noise cancelling cannot be returned off) this is a huge drawback. Also in the UK, the ear pads cost £100 each to be replaced. I have moved onto the Dali iO12 which are simply incredible. Dali have said they will replace the battery in the future. The ear pads clip off easily and can be replaced. They can also be used actively or passively with a 3.5 mil cable.

Comfort, weight, build quality are thing you can't change easily on a headphone. But the 490 has excellent QC, so is the perfect platform to make it the best headphone available for you. Good QC is something that can't be said for most headphones this year and if something is badly made and uncomfortable for long periods, then why bother?

I want to emphasize that the sound quality on 490 pro is actually quite good if you consider what was missing from the HD 6 series. It's more that some of us are a bit more treble averse, which is why we'd prefer the sound quality from the HD 6 series that's a bit more relaxed in the treble.

It has some sort of compression that makes it have a built-in loudness compensation so it gets richer at lower volumes so you can still heat the bass and treble instead of mids taking over.

I get why it couldn't be considered, but want to give a shout out to the Omega (from DMS). It is one of my favorites for just how natural sounding it is and it's very good at everything. I have may flagships and this thing competes. It would get my vote.

@@FabioGrenkh I never got the stereotype, I have had just as many issues with American made headphones as I have with Chi-fi gear; I think the difference is American companies are given an easy pass on a lot of youtube channels, but if you go some digging online you will find there are plenty of issues with many companies.

Was picking between meze 105 aer and hd 490 pro and this video made me go with the 490 pro. Apparently bass and midrange are equal with the producer pads but treble has a slight difference

I really wanted to love the HD 490 Pro, but it has a fatal flaw in the comfort department for me: the raised “L” and “R” embossed in the driver covers rubs against my ears and is incredibly scratchy and painful. I understand why it’s there, but an alternate set of driver covers without those would have been nice to have in the box for those of us with larger ears.

Will have to get the FT1 methinks! Criticism of Dusk app is justified but shouldn't be overstated - no need to use it as default tuning is great, just plug and play with USBC (or use with 3.5mm and published EQ settings in your EQ app of choice), she's an awesome IEM.

Nice choices. My favourite is FT1 closed back budget King. Under 1K you can't get better closed back. Next would be ZMF bokah. For open back I wish to try AudioTechnica ADX3000, also Meze 105 Are, but I am not surprised about 490pro choice which is first Sennheiser I actually like based on design. How is the DCA E3 for EDM music please? I'm looking for a closed back headphone and this one was at the top of the list. But I was just reading on headfi and from the user reviews it seems that it's not that good for EDM music. Is that right? Also, voices sound so in front that they are a bit apart from the mix..? From other reviews I read that the bass doesn't go very deep, bit still punchy. Which sounds ok for that music genre? I was looking for something as close to S-tier as possible ;)

It's refreshing, pleasant, and relieving. In that moment it's the best drink you've ever had and yet at the same time you just had some water.

So good to see HD490 pro getting the top spot for the year! I picked one up recently after quite a lot of review watching/reading. Big shout out to the Headphone Show as it helped me zero in on the 3-4 products I wanted to pick from (HD490 Pro, HiFiMAN Arya/Edition XS, Meze 109 Pro). Need honest opinion about QC ultra using for studio like studio monitor headphone. I want to use them like universal headphones for everything. Is it the best choice? The HD490 my second choice but they have only wired connection. This is not bad for me, but I want more flexibility. Seems you like the HD 620S since you wear them. I also bought them for gaming use because I wanted a bit more bass capability but enjoy the sound of my HD650. With a bit of EQ they sound very similar.

actually surprised by the 1200USD DAC, I just placed an order for Yggdrasil DAC and currently waiting to be shipped. This is sad, but I guess I won't want a second R2R DAC. I'm looking into the hi-end solid-state amp, any recommendations? My current candidates are: SPL Phonitor XE, HA430, Hifiman Prelude Aiming for strong microdynamics, just don't want soft sounds, because I have a tube amp already.

I have the yggdrasil og DAC. Ive got other SS and R2R DACs as well- but I always find myself listening to the yggy the most. Pair it with a nicer tube amp- I have a Felix Audio tube amp & the Cayin HA-300B MK2 tube amp with genuine Western Electric 300B tubes. Simply amazing !

I have tangzu wan'er. I liked it's forward vocals, some clarity and little bit subbass sometimes. I want to upgrade on better bass, a very good surround sound stage and excellent separation in the sound and the superb comfort. My budget is around 100-150$. Can you suggest me the best one based on my experience with the current one. I'm confused whether it's worth spending this much if the budget iem like kefine klean, simgot ew300 (heard has some qc issues) are so good. Also simgot em6l has qc issues.

This is all very interesting information that is of no use given the lack of structure. Someone's recommendation for BEST Headphones were a dac and an amp, someone threw in some IEMs just to keep it unstructured and you've got a member of the panel considering one of the few actual headphones to have bad audio. Maybe prep some lists, make a few videos with categories and pricing brackets instead of whatever this was. Swap out the personal tales of experiences with a short introduction of each person's audio preferences and pet peaves to give context to the remarks that follow. I am not a regular viewer of this channel, this video could have been a great opportunity to expand your audience. You guys seem like a varied bunch that can give great recommendations, this was not that.

Hard to say if it is a fits-all situation, but it is available widely enough to try and return if it doesn't work I guess. Fits me very well, and the velour pads are ridiculously soft. I haven't even broken out the mixing pads (though one of these days I should try to use it and do some mixing work).

The HD490 is amazing for FPS-gaming. The pinpointing is better than the HD560s and about the same as the HD800s. The HD490 is also really good for music. Also for music during work. It's not agressive.

The HD 490 Pro follows the same design problem of every Sennheiser below the HD700s: they are crushing skull clamps for small-headed folks. I do not understand their design philosophy.
