I have three RecTeq smokers now. Including a 9 yr old 680 and my newest 2 year old BFG 2500. I do five or six large (100-350 ppl) events a year for charity and love having a bigger pellet smoker. I love my BFG 2500 but it does not put out much smoke. I ordered the cabinet a month ago and can't wait to check it out. Everyone raves about LSG equipment.

I have been saving up for the cabinet smoker. Last summer, I had to turn down 3 jobs because I didn't have the capacity to do what was asked of me. Even if my first year, I only do those 5 briskets and 6 pulled pork that one of those jobs were, I imagine I would get more of the larger jobs once people hear I am not saying no. So within 2 years, I would hope the grill pays for itself. Who knows though.

It is more than just capacity - it is also about cooking on taller grates. I’m 6’6” and cooking on the grates at 45, 51, 58 inches from the ground is my favorite feature. The cabinet door is by far the easiest access option too. I keep the lowest shelf for water pans and rendering tallow. Capacity is just a bonus as it is just my wife and me, with the occasional kid or friend over. Holidays when all the kids and guests come are too easy. Happy to pay the 1/2 lb per hour of pellet consumption over my 42 at the same temp! I got it to cook taller.
@TheBarbecueLab

I'm sure that extra height is a game changer for those who are taller. There aren't many grills with grates at that height, so makes total sense to me.

I'm curious how this design distributes the heat. I didn't see where they put the port for the stack. Where they placed the exhaust port impacts heat distribution. A biscuit test would show where the hot and cool spots are.

Love your videos, very professional but accessible at once. The smoke is amazing and I could see using this to cook for groups but not for my own daily needs. I wonder if they'd make one that has half the capacity, or if this is strictly to access more of a pro market? Either way, I'd love to have one to cook for church and for our homeless ministry. Keep up the good work!
@TheBarbecueLab
@TheBarbecueLab 3 ай бұрын
Their other pellet smokers are more of a daily single family smoker to me, and this one is all about cooking for groups in my opinion. I did fire it up for a single brisket the other day, and it did great, but I only used 1/4 of 1 shelf out of 4 total shelves. While I could use it for daily use, I think it’s going to be a community style cooker here at The Lab. Whenever we’re cooking for church or the non-profits we support, this thing will be in the mix.

Very nice smoker. It's huge, but it's footprint is the same or smaller than the traditional offset style. I just don't know that I'd need that much cook space. What I was really wondering though, is how much more smoke you get on a cook if you use the pellets and wood chips, as opposed to just the pellets? Especially on a longer cook like brisket or pork butts.

I have the 42x 20 LSG and a huge trailer pit by Dave Klose in Houston. I’ve been cooking on that offset trailer pit for over 15 years and really was kind of a snob against the pellet smokers. I had a Traeger, and it was fine, but no comparison to the stick burner. I got the LSG and did a blind taste test with my wife and 3 grown boys, all of whom have eaten from the stick burner Theo whole lives. I am from Texas and do central Texas BBQ. I got the post oak pellets and post oak wood chips from LSG and did the briskets the same. Same rub, same wrap I butcher paper and wagyu beef tallow, same prime briskets, or as close as I could get weight wise, same trim, same 12 hour hold at 145. My wife and my boys were totally blinded as to which was which. They had to judge on appearance, bark, tenderness, juiciness, smokiness, and overall flavor. All 4 of them chose the LSG over the offset for every category. I wasn’t blinded to the briskets but I had to agree. The LSG with the wood chips was better.

That is an awesome smoker. We have a big family of six and I want to start doing eventish type things but not full fledged catering. I want to get into bbq competitions so I’m considering between a heavy duty pellets smoker or a gravity fed charcoal smoker. Would love to see you do a comparison on something like that LSG and a Stumps gravity fed charcoal smoker. I can only barely afford one if I want to stay happily married 😂
@TheBarbecueLab
@TheBarbecueLab 3 ай бұрын
I haven’t ever cooked on a Stumps gravity, but I hope to one of these days. I guess my initial thoughts come down to the type of competitions you’d like to enter. Some allow electricity and pellet grills, and others don’t. That might be a deciding factor depending on which way you want to go with it.
