I was just in Las Vegas for World of Concrete. TBH, I forgot about Shot Show. However, I had an actual Ben Petersen sighting in the wild! 🤣 It blew my mind. I yelled “what is up guys” Ben didn’t see or hear me but some middle age ladies responded with enthusiasm so it wasn’t a complete loss.

Magnacut: The Suckers Steel
@theKashConnoisseur5 ай бұрын
Nah man, it's actually a pretty big advancement in knife steel metallurgy. Usually, you have to trade off between stainlessness, toughness, and edge retention. When picking steel properties, before Magnacut you'd pick two of the three that you wanted to have good performance in, and you'd accept that the third steel property would suffer. For instance, 420HC is very tough, quite stainless, but has cheese-soft edge retention. Those trade-offs were accepted as a fact of life in knife steels. And then Dr. Thomas got Crucible to run his new steel recipe... And he was able to come up with a steel that was VERY tough, almost entirely corrosion resistant, and with better than average edge retention. And it's easy to machine, hardens to a ridiculous Rockwell value, doesn't get chippy with fine edge grinds... It's pretty amazing stuff, to be honest.
@clandestinetactical5 ай бұрын
Umm 🤔 lol 😂 ok there “Suckers steel “ If you know anything about metallurgical chemistry.. then you should know that Magnacut is superior to 80% of the blade steels on the market .. you can read about it more if you like …
@AnAmericanFather5 ай бұрын
@@clandestinetactical what I know is how tools work in the wilderness. Magnacut is for suckers. I have been using high carbon steel knives in the wilderness for 30 years. I will put my D2 steel knives up against your ridiculously expensive magnacut any day. If you have money to throw away on names, then feel free. but magna cut steel, it’s for suckers.
@AnAmericanFather5 ай бұрын
@@theKashConnoisseur if all that you do is talk about steel, then, yeah, it’s great. In the real world, as in out in the wilderness, it’s an extreme waste of money. I have been using D2 steel knives to guide for over half of my life.I would never spend money on magnacut, because it’s unnecessary and silly.
@theKashConnoisseur5 ай бұрын
@@AnAmericanFather If you were really a wilderness guide, you'd probably prefer a tougher steel than D2 lol. That stuff is liable to snap on you while batoning. You'd be better of with cheap old 420HC, with it's class leading toughness. Not to mention you could sharpen 420HC with any old river rock, while D2 is gonna demand some tougher abrasives. But hey, you might be interested to know that Magnacut out-performs D2 in every important property. It's tougher than D2, it's more stainless than D2, and it has better edge retention than D2. So if D2 works well for you, Magnacut would work even better. Although personally, I'd rather CPM 3V for a hard use woodcraft blade. Now, is it really. a waste of money to invest in quality survival tools? You'd think someone claiming to be a wilderness guide for half their life would know the value in a good knife that will outlast him. But hey, a lot of people make false clams about themselves online.

Honestly, the most interesting for me was the last traditional Case slip joint. Just to be clear, I am the type of guy who carries a Böker Kalashnikov OTF of all knives but this slip joint has reminded me of a WW2 Gerlach RGMe I recently got my hands on in an old tool haul and I absolutely love it. Sadly I didn't find it for sale in Europe.

The Case Razor definitely piqued my interest. I don't think I'd actually carry it though. Seems more of a collector's piece, like most Case knives.

@@theKashConnoisseur Here in the Czech republic you can carry a gun if you want. Sure you need a permit but its not that much of a problem to get one. Just pass the test proving you can handle the gun safely and answer the questions about gun law. Knives are not limited at all, at least to the best of my knowledge. I believe you might be thinking about laws in England or somewhere similar but that is not the case at all in the central/western Europe. It is even possible to acquire certain set of firearms without a permit around here. If you are interested maybe have a look at Detonics derringer (.45 and .50 cal) or Alfa 9mm flobert revolvers. Both are possible to buy without a permit and carry for personal defence around here. All you have to do is to register the gun. I personally own a 6mm flobert revolver which is not suitable for self defence but I can use it for target practice in my yard. No shooting range needed.

@Naptosis5 ай бұрын
Welcome! Kershaw were flagging a little, but they've released some bangers recently!
@theKashConnoisseur5 ай бұрын
Kershaw is a solid pocket knife brand. They tend to be a bit more on the affordable side so not of lot of premium steels, handle materials, and locking mechanisms. But they offer consistent quality for a fair price, which is 99% of what you want in an EDC knife. Kershaw has a higher-end line of knives under the brand "Zero Tolerance" or ZT, and through that brand they do offer several premium knives with all the fancy steels, handles, and features that connoisseurs desire.
