Indie is available from Sonokinetic: bit.ly/3MaK2i8
Sonokinetic proves that small sections can have a big emotional impact with the latest sample-based orchestral phrase library, Indie, a profoundly inspiring and useful instrument for Kontakt.

Good showcase. I noticed you had the "phrase follow" keyswitch turned off for the whole video. Turning this function on would've allowed you to switch to different chords part-way through a phrase playback. Much more fun.

Thanks Ruben. All I did was load up the instrument and check it out. I didn't realize the phrase-follow was not on but I will be sure to address the feature in the full review. Thanks

it would be nice if Sonokinetic would release a sample library of all their titles so people could explore the compositional method these libraries represent.

Debating whether to purchase. I agree with Jeff that with both melodic and harmonic elements you start to lose your ability to have a unique voice. Plus, because of the limitation of phrases, I don't know how these will sound transitioning from chord to chord. Some seem like they would work better than others. What I really want is a library with solo instruments simply playing minor and major intervals with different rhythmic patterns and dynamic shapes. That would give you the versatility to make your own arrangement while retaining a live feel.

Nice overview. I only need the string quartet material, so wish Sonokinetic would break out the libraries in more affordable sections.

It sounds beautiful and I think the intro price is justified but at this point I'm going to get more out of paying more for the orchestral libraries that suit my needs instead of phrase libraries. I already paid for the 500$ Sono bundle last year and I 'm getting use out what I wanted out of it (the orchestral phrase libraries) but then if I wanted Noir and Indie and next, and next; I'd rather make a solid investment in something lower level and more diverse than keep paying 2-300 for the phrase libraries they put out. They sound great, they're fun and I think the prices are fair but it's time to make stuff from scratch. Thanks for the review.

I love the sound, but I can't feel good about phrase libraries, especially with this much detail. I'm a composer not a button presser. Thanks for letting me hear it though.

I agree with you, but I think this kind of tool can help you a lot when you have to work in a hurry. Then, it's like in all professions, you have different ways of doing the same job.

@@akcel1211 I can see both sides of this issue, but I've heard some amazing work done with phrase libraries where the composer uses the phrase offset functions, to create all sorts of new phrases or combinations or phrases, but with the live feel of these sorts of samples. I agree with Don, some of the woodwind sounds in particular in Indie would be very hard to replicate with many sample libaries. There are also a lot of accompaniment figures and chords in this library, or ornamental stuff from the harp or tuned percussion that would be a fantastic colour to add to a composition, or even a starting point for something else. In a way it's not that different from hearing the string ostinato figures or arpeggios that are a staple of epic trailer music and similiar genres. I think it's how you go about using this sort of library.

Phrase libraries represent a different method of composition; I would work with cheap or free construction kits first before investing in these libraries; I suspect that to get the most of your investment, you would not have to NOT be in a hurry to compose with Indie. But in the back of my student's mind is something about not being fully in control of everything. Another way is to get free midi files of existing pieces for study and re-writing exercises. I know it took me three years to write one Quartet, and my cheap sample library does not do it much justice either.

I thought the same about phrase libraries in the beginning. After working with alot of different ones, you can still create your own compositions, and they can be very useful to kickstart the creative process. I remember seeing someone comment on one of these phrase videos a long time ago, that they were watching an interview with Hans Zimmer, and noticed on the computer behind him, was a phrase library loaded up...sooooo...lol.

Would I ever finish a piece? Or would I play with this library as an ideas mill and allow my my experience to influence me with my writing from scratch? The ting is; you could have a breath controller and Roli keyboard, for example, to try for a midi performance and it still would not sound right; but here everything sounds right because well it is right, it is how the phrase is supposed to be played by experts.

Hey dom, I agree with you on all fronts. I do especially love these libraries by Sono for when I am on a deadline and still want to have the sound of "real" players ;)

@@SampleLibraryReviews At ay rate, musical structure would be good, still essential to have forward movement and a seamless flow of ideas; just painting with large brushes instead of small ones I guess.

Someone please tell me they are going to make this into a normal library instead of phrase builder.. Im a composer and I have been DYING to get a good String quartet sample. Also I have heard the other libraries too they have made and the winds and brass are amazing. So many possibilities if they decided to do this!!

Yeah, but it's phrase based. Who pays for pre-made phrases? I couldn't make a composition using this and call it my own. That goes against any composer's principle. I'll stick Orchestral Tools/ProjectSAM.

Where do you draw the line though? How original are you phrases really anyway? What's more important to me is if it allows me to express the ideas I have in my head without me feeling confined. And of course, will this sound like a thousand other pieces that are using the same library? And it's also important to realize that this won't likely make out the whole composition. Apart from end production it could be a very useful tool for sketching things out or just to gather inspiration from. Plus it offers realism that you just can't get from programming with samples.
