Of course it was a better movie than likes of a star is born and black panther but although the movie reaches for something not quite sentimental and rather a underlying story of mankind as a whole, it still falls short on good story telling. It has well-written script but behind this writing isn't a good enough material.

I find it so interesting that I've heard lots of people describe the scene on the moon as anticlimactic. I understand how that contributes beautifully to the themes of the film, but it wasn't my experience at all. I found it profoundly moving how peaceful and still it was, in contrast to the rest of the film especially. For a man in so much turmoil whom I was empathizing heavily with I felt it was exactly what he was searching for, he achieved the goal that he was using to distract himself from his own pain and grief and once he got there he was able to be humbled by the expanse of it all and given time and space to sit with and accept everything that had been going on in his life, mind, and heart without the influence of anyone else interrupting him. As a viewer it was the sigh of relief I'd been waiting all film to let out.

Just to emphasize; as a conclusion to the space race and all the idealized promises of outer space, the actual act of putting a man on the moon may have felt somewhat disappointing.... but as the conclusion Neil's personal journey I definitely didn't find the scene anticlimactic and I would agree with you that it was effectively cathartic as you so beautifully articulate, thanks! :)

I felt like we, the audience were being asked to simply put ourselves on Armstrong's shoes, to use our imaginations. First Man was the most exciting and fulfilling 'space film' I have seen, precisely because it presented the gritty, nuts and bolts reality of tbe whole adventure. Ordinary men doing unbelievably extraordinary things, sometimes by the seat of their pants. Incredible.

The director and writer were confident to stand in front of us and ask 'well you know the mission, but do you know the man?' First Man is not a scientific film, it's not about USA's most prestigious mission of the lunar landing, it's not even the biopic of #NeilAmstrong, it's a very touching story about a father overcoming his little daughter's death. The director succeeds like a pro in conveying that this is what the film is about, in every such movie the viewers would experience catharsis when the protagonist achieves his/her goal and here we don't feel that when Neil's stepping on the moon but during a moment after that. All of us, as human beings, use different methods to cope with our emotions, Neil Armstrong just went to the moon! It's a shame #TheAcademy , you had one of the greatest piece of cinema of this decade in your hands and you refused to acknowledge it's greatness. I was presently surprised when I watched the film and honestly anybody can present Neil Armstrong as the American hero but Damien Chazelle stands out in showing him as a human being.

You’ve done this film justice. Thank you for this. I’ve been raving about this film ever since I saw it opening weekend in IMAX and yet no one seems interested. This film truly captured what it means to be human and have a burning desire to overcome the impossible. It’s a shame the Oscars can’t see that and rather nominate films that please certain agendas. Thank you for this! Oh and the landing scene took my breath away I think it’s anything but anticlimactic
@LienRanMizunagi

It wasn't anti-climatic it was what it was, it really hits home that when you are driven to a certain feat that you consider impossible and the moment you overcome it is when it really sinks in and you start to question what is it really worth? that by being peerless or great that our own visions of grandiosity gets a reality check via introspection, like it means everything and nothing at the same time.

Ryan Krueger I think it’s anti-climatic in the sense of how downplayed it was. Juxtapose it with the loud overbearing test runs and launch sequences, the moon walk scene is meant to feel more empty and undramatic yet more personal
@MCancient
@MCancient 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I don’t think he was calling it anti-climactic as a criticism. The understated, introspective approach was necessary to convey the emotions from Armstrong’s perspective. It would also seem silly to overly dramatize the mission itself, as the audience already knows it was a complete success.

@ryankrueger1669 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I understand what you're saying. I guess it was just how I heard the word "anti-climactic", but he wasn't using it with a negative connotation. The landing scene isn't loud and noisy like the other shuttle scenes, but that's why it hit me even harder than they did, albeit in a different way.

Really reminded me of other sober films about exploration as Kon Tiki (2012) and also touching the films of obsession and madness against the unknown as in Close encounters of the third kind (1977). I do not feel its a shame, not in the least. To me it is more about who it hits, not how many. Its what we, as individuals take from an experience and how it helps us. The Oscars are for people who believe they need the spotlight put on them. Which is why it surprises me when people are annoyed by such things. The "general public" are not much different than the people of Ancient Rome, ie the Colosseum. This great man, our narrator, actually helped to remind me of this.

Like Stories of Old is exceptional in its grasp of Cinema. First Man is a film that is not so much a History Lesson, but a Personal Journey of a broken man... and his need to make sense of what life has become despite of himself. Neil Armstrong truly does not like talking about the Moon Landing, as it was HIS Personal Journey of Discovery and Acceptance... & the film underscores this.

As someone who grew up in the military during this era, I find that modern films often get the way officers of the time worked wrong. A military wife of that era who raised her voice to a commanding officer in front of witnesses would have tanked her husband's career. (Women officers were treated differently in so many ways that it's not a fair comparison to make. General Hoisington -- one of the first two women to be promoted to brigadier -- was unmarried throughout her career at least partially because in the earliest days women were required to retire if they married.) What seems like good drama today is often antithetical to the reality of the times. Apollo 13, I think, did a better job of capturing the realities of military life.

I loved the contrast between the claustrophobic and chaotic way the first flights where portrayed and the stunningly beautiful and powerful, more cinematic way the last launch was shown. it was almost as if you where struggling with them through the film (some of the scenes where almost nauseating) and then you FELT the result of their efforts on the last launch. it was like a celebration while neils eyes where fixed on the moon. Also, the contrast between the sterile, cold and sharp images from the lunar surface intercut with the warm and cosy memories from earth. I absolutely loved this film.

In your Gladiator essay you explained how the film perfectly uses spectacle to drive the narrative. It’s also a perfect companion piece with this video. Spectacle is beautifully used in First Man as well, where the effects and visuals are only used for narrative purposes. For this reason I’m happy it won the Visual Effects Oscar and not some Marvel movie, because the effects here are so beautiful but subtle, and used for the right purposes. Thank you for another beautiful video!

I loved First Man. I watched it three times inside a week. It put the viewer into the white knuckle terror of those moments when you feel like you might lose your life. And makes you ponder what kind of man goes back for more? That increasingly famous moment of spending all the capsule’s fuel, to find a place to land on the moon, really happened. And we’ve been pondering whether Armstrong was stubborn or brave ever since. But, the financial argument is bogus. The number of people NASA employs; jobs they created, inventions made, etc, contributed 11 dollars for every 1 spent, at a Conservative estimate.

I facepalm every time I heard someone ask "Why do we bother with up there, when so much goes on down here?". We have benefited so much from the space program, yet so many are unaware. Its Iike when people do no t have faith in science, yet they share in the benefits. There is something much deeper, tho. Every story has a lesson, it is up to us to decipher it. We look mostly at hat which separates us, ignoring that which brings us together. That and, as Kennedy said, it is part of who we are. We do because we must. If we were not this way, we'd have never become who we are. While we are imperfect, we have come so far. As for myself, I am very proud of what we have overcome. We are not perfect, but we are trying.

I think the main reason why this film didn't make the noise you feel it deserved was down to people seeing the now familiar Chazelle theme of 'this is what it takes to be great' being explored again. Perhaps the idea of a movie star or a great musician making huge sacrifices was a new take on this well trodden theme, whereas movies like The Right Stuff have already covered the idea of space exploration being dangerous and risky work. It won't be his last movie by any means, so no doubt he will be recognized again in the future. Ps How cool to have two of the most unsung character actors in the one movie. There was a spell in the mid 00's where Ciaran Hinds was in everything (even making a memorable appearance in one of the greatest TV shows ever, Game of Thrones), now it's Jason Clarke who seems to be the able supporting actor of choice.

As someone who studied the space race, this film got a lot of things right (the only exception being the protesters dislike of the Apollo mission). I love how it didn't idealize the sixties and showed what a twisted society it was back then. It helps understand why shows like Star Trek were considered ahead of its time. I think that there is a good analysis one can make from this film from the perspective of mental health, and the extreme expectations each character was placed under to fill a role.

I believe Damien Chazelle is an artful master of paradox. La La Land gave us the glorious climax of heart-throbbing tragedy. It was the despair of losing our ideal desire itself that gave us a new glory to behold. In First Man we witness the seemingly anticlimactic resolution of humanity’s determination for victory. The initial nullification of our emotional expectations soon becomes irrelevant, because now the will of the soul is finally put to rest- and this itself, paradoxically, is the very mystery we were seeking to experience.

I really appreciated the honesty of this movie, weirdly I feel like I loved this movie so much for many of the same reasons others disliked it.

This is the first of your movies that I have seen and it was beautiful. I would add that the title resonates so well because it can refer to the real first man, the real first human being to become self-conscious, because it was his/her necessity to overcome death and loss, as we seen in many ancient epics such as Gilgamesh.

Tom, soul brother, a thousand thanks. I'd love to catch First Man on the big screen. May get a chance some day. Btw, I be embarking on a journey of watching every film you've covered. I feel this will be a deeply rewarding experience. On another note, have you ever considered doing somthing on asian film? East asian like? I'm huge into the cinema of China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, you name it. I feel its approach to filmmaking offers a interesting contrast to the western and I'd die to have a look through you eyes on some of that good stuff.

Ben Rich, the former Director of Lockheed said, “We already have the means to travel among the stars, but these technologies are locked up in black projects and it would take an Act of God to ever get them out to benefit humanity…Anything you can imagine, we already know how to do.” I wish the gov't would reveal our true capabilities so we could all experience the miracle of space travel.

Fantastic video. The eternal struggle. Good vs evil, flesh vs spirit, greatness v comfort. Being mutually exclusive, you can only serve one or the other, not both.
