Great result with the fuel tank and repair of the overflow tube. I'd want to cap off the overflow outlet for the first could of hundred miles, just in case. I think acid eats "monkey metal", as i think the alloy of petrol taps and carburettor bodies is called. Your vinegar did a great job of the tank but had attacked the petrol tap and maybe the alloy components of the fuel cap as well. Next time, you can make up a blanking plate for the fuel tap with a piece of old inner tube as a seal (and fuel level sender if there is one) and use a universal plastic fuel cap as a simple bung for the top of the tank.
@AshRowland4 ай бұрын
Thanks mate, I'm hoping there isn't a next time, tanks are my nemesis 🤣 there's no fuel sender in this one, there's a separate second fuel tap that the main one in the tank connects to via fuel hose which has the on and reserve positions.
@leon04 ай бұрын
Get a caswell liner kit. They now advertise 100% ethanol resistance. You won't fear fuel tanks again. You will need to make up blanking plates as described though, so the liner fluid doesn't clog things up.

Using hydraulic pressure is way better than delboys socket method. I usually stick a couple of tyre levers in the centre of the caliper to restrict the movement of the pistons enough so all four get moving. One tyre lever per pair of opposed pistons. Remember, the last one to move is the worst so actually the most important to get moving before one of the other pistons pops out.

The metal piece in the master cylinder reservoir is normal. It stops fluid from squirting out and covering the front of the bike when the cap is off and you are bleeding the brakes. To get the pistons out (or most of the way out), I normally put something between the pistons (often a randome spanner) , roughly located by the body of the caliper, to stop the pistons coming out. Then pump them out until the all hit the bit that is blocking them. Never use Mole Grips, etc, on brake pistons (you can get a kit with expanding pieces to grip the insides of the pistons , and then use a slide hammer to get them out - not that expensive) If you strip the switchgear down you can repaint them, and there are decals available to replace the labelling on them. I have ridden on older tyres...... Original tyres on my YSR50! So, when are you buying the other FZR1000?
@AshRowland4 ай бұрын

@@AshRowland , pinged you an email about the decals. Years ago I put the FZ back on the road and the tyres were old (about 10 years old). It would spin the back wheel up in the wet when gently accelerating away from the lights! It varies with the tyres, how they are stored, etc.

Just from listening to the way it was worded it sounds like its one of the brake light bulbs that's not working rather than the rear brake light switch, obviously if the one of the 2 bulbs lights up and the other doesn't it's the bulb, connector or a rusty bulb socket. Tanks have breathers to stop vacuum of tank stopping fuel from flowing.
@AshRowland4 ай бұрын
Yup, hopefully mine isn't blocked
@leon04 ай бұрын
The breathers are one way so your tank behaved correctly by pressurising. They must let air in so you don't get an air lock, but not out. They don't let fuel vapour out so will pressurise. They are made to be strong enough that they won't split in normal use IE full of fuel for hours in the hot summer sun. The breather is a little diaphragm in the fuel cap. Makes sense to take apart and clean to make sure it will let air in as the pressure in the tank drops with fuel going out.

Vinegar is a really goddamn bad idea. Citric acid is way better, and what's even better is "beyond ballistics" rust removal solution which is a *specific* mix of citric acid and caustic soda. It's fast, cheap, and doesn't eat good metal (at least not as fast as vinegar does).
@AshRowland4 ай бұрын
Yea, I mean if the vinegar got rid of the rust that quickly, it's probably taken a fair bit of the good metal too lol, I see what you mean
@wibblywobblyidiotvision4 ай бұрын
@@AshRowland yeah, vinegar's a bit of a shit, really. Same as hydrochloric, which will also remove rust. Basically the only safe ways are to use a chelating agent - something like evaporust or the bb mix, or to do electrolysis. Electrolysis is nothing short of magic, but it's a pain in the hole to do in a tank. I think Nat's Nackers Yard did a tank electrolysis. Not sure about using araldite, either, I'm fairly sure that stock araldaite is not fuel safe - it'll go soggy and end up leaking again, or worse, get chunks washed into the carbs. If it's for a long term fix, you realy want to look into specific sealants / glues for use in petrol. But they aren't cheap. Nice bike, though. I loved my FZR but I never had a big one - mine was a 1WG, first run of 400s, which was an absolute screamer, hit the redline at 14k. My mate had the 250, which was even more insane with a redline somewhere around 18k IIRC. Huge fun.
