After passing my test in 1992 I have not done any further training. So when I was invited on a Bike Safe course with the Met Police I though it was about time to see how many bad habits I've picked up, I was rather shocked!!

I’m a ROSPA Tutor but I don’t own a pipe or a pair of slippers! Congrats for doing the day. I tell students they are 80% of the way to improving their safety on the road just by the very fact they have joined a group. Motorcycle Safety is grounded on your attitude, the practical sessions/lessons are just the icing on the cake.

I’ve been riding on road for 4 years (ex off roader) and my instructor drummed into me that you never ever overtake if there’s any sort of junction ahead even if you can see it’s clear just so you get in the habit, maybe because I’m in my fifties it’s sunk in 🤔 I see loads of riders over taking when they’re unsighted by a van or something , the training new riders get now is a lot better than back in the day for sure 😊

Good stuff. I was a police officer for a few years about 20 years ago… it took me a good while to get used to seeing the police vehicles behind you then thinking, oh yeah, I’m in one as well… the driver training was great fun though, shame about the rest of the job. Keep the great content coming. 👍👍

The first mistake was the officer didn’t identify himself to a member of the public.. is that not police policy? 🤔

Like you I started riding at 16, but in my case that was 1975! I passed my motorcycle test in 1976 and have ridden on and off ever since. Also like you I have not done any further training since passing my test and hardly did any before. I did my BikeSafe workshop with Gloucestershire Police a few weeks ago and found all aspects excellent. I really enjoyed the online video lectures and learned a lot, especially about other road users, but the lectures on the day were also educational and my assessed ride was really enjoyable. I would recommend BikeSafe to anyone who rides.

I've heard "everyone is out to kill you" too but I like to think that if you ride like "no-one has seen you" it puts you in a better frame of mind. Just imagine you are invisible so if another vehicle pulls out on you or changes lanes in front of you you are ready for it but you don't get angry as it was an accident as they just didn't see you opposed to they are using you as target practice.
@booshallmighty
@booshallmighty 2 жыл бұрын
I too hate that saying. Motorcycling is fun, why would you want to imagine everyone is trying to kill you? My personal thoughts that I have is the same as I have with my car or van. Just stay out of people's way as best you can. Simple. Or maybe not. So many people drive in blind spots or along side an artic lorry. Just madness. I always try get clean air, no one in front or behind. This is what power is for, to get you into a safe bubble. Most of the riding accidents on KZbin it's clear to me it'd the rider being a dick. I think most riders are trying to kill themselves.

Thanks for another fun and informative video Chops. When he coached you on stopping distance behind a stationary vehicle ahead, another sound reason to stay back a bit, when filtering isn't a reasonable option, is to have an escape route from any potential daydreamer that's coming up from behind, to hot to stop. Thanks again Chops, keep em coming.

Ian - You really SHOULD have had an AP50 mate.......... 😉. I started with a scrapped Mobylette which my Dad paid a fiver for - same time as you mate I guess. I agree too - I have been bikeless for 40 years until 2018. Ridden a few times on other peoples - but now BACK in the groove, but could do with a brush up on my skill level.

Very refreshing to see this common sense approach on the BikeSafe course. My local force closed it down in early 2020 because of Covid, just as I had got back into biking after 30 years away. I had done a couple of days with an IAM group, but I didn’t like the constant emphasis on “making progress” and taking every possible overtaking opportunity. I will now go and find out if there are any BikeSafe courses available again near me. Thanks for a great video.

Brilliant. Watched this first on the Bikesafe website. Came here, so I could give you a thumbs up. Got my BikeSafe course coming up in a few week's time and I was feeling super nervous. But watching you has helped me to calm down a bit about having a policeman riding behind me. Plus the part on No overtaking with offside options - Priceless. Didn't know that =) Thanks again for filming this. Much appreciated =)

Did my IAMS down here in Cornwall. Met some great people ,learnt, and still learning a huge amount I think it’s something like 90% of motorcycle accidents are rider error. So why not get as much knowledge as you can. Think it cost me about £140 and all the instructors are volunteers. Raises your riding level, and that can’t be a bad thing Great vid Chopsy, keep em coming Ben

As a guy who's worked in the Motorcycle trade, I've seen it first hand, unfortunately the majority of those bike accidents is 'Born Againers' that haven't ridden in 30 or more years going out and buying a fast modern bike and don't really have the understanding of what modern bikes are capable of, so defiantly some further training is a great idea, I'd highly recommend.

That course was the first time I ever heard or considered that after the PO told me about it. Also, they to,d me about how to position myself so people who don’t have the right of way can see my and I can see the whites of their eyes. Seems obvious now. At less than 3 months of riding, it changed my thinking and made me view riding defensively as serious as I took track riding, cornering, or any other aspects I enjoyed. I started to enjoy, and have ever since, always being prepared, predicting driver behavior, and avoiding close calls.

Coincidentally I did Bikesafe yesterday with the North Yorkshire Police. I'm old enough that my bike test was the old ride around the block and do an emergency stop affair so Bikesafe was my first formal training of any sort! Had a good Q&A session while reviewing the videos in the morning which provided some good tips then the observed ride along North Yorkshire's roads - much quieter than dahn sarf! Feedback for me was use position 3 for left handers (I generally do except when the corner's blind) and trust my tyres a bit more. For £65 it's a no-brainer to me, especially if you get an insurance discount on the back of it.

I remember chasing a Pan European out of Croydon many years ago on my R1. I was waiting for the country lanes to pass him, no chance that bike was being ridden by a demon. It then dawned on me that he is probably off duty policeman. I followed him and got some schooling for a few miles instead

I remember back in the 80's trying to follow some old guy on a BMW RT, I was riding a big Suzuki, I could have easily passed him on outright speed, but on a busy A road through the traffic I was never able to get near him, just seemed to see overtakes I didn't, but none of them seemed at all risky.

Highly recommend all riders to do a Bikesafe. On your ride video the overtake at 12:30 was probably unwise as there was an entrance to a big house on the ride hand side of the road which the tractor could have pulled into without indicating, or something could have pulled out of it.

Nice vid (shame about the dodgy overtakes!). I did my second BikeSafe course last weekend. I’d also thoroughly recommend it. Things I took from it were; use as much of the road as you need; give yourself time and space with position and speed, then the words to live by; go in slow, come out fast.

You know what Mr Chops, I’m 57, ridden since I was 16 ( fizzy, DT175, X7, ZThou,Exup, XR 650 Supermoto, Tuono factory, RC8R, and now a 1200GS ) marshalled at the TT for years etc etc. Anyway, I did Bikesafe in York as I know a couple of the traffic bike lads quite well and found it addictive, so I did the I.A.M course ( had to bite my lip a few times with that lot but by and large v.good riders ) culminating with the ride out for 3 chuffing hours with a very experienced bike cop following me. By the end I was mentally shattered ! BUT, I got a 1st ( only 5% who do the test get a first….) I have to say, riding to the Police system i.e ‘ i.p.s.g.a.’ Is definitely THE way to ride ‘ spiritedly’ AND safely…….well as safe as it can be anyway.

Two options, either 2days of classes and riding, or a day of that and a day of medical training (incl scene management/traffic control, how to safely remove a helmet and why, etc). Did Bike Safe years ago and then went on to RoSPA and worked up to Gold. Absolutely transformed my riding, made some great friends also and opened me up to European Touring. Can't recommend advanced training enough - either RoSPA or IAM. It makes you a far better rider. I was expecting a load of old codgers in pipes and slippers when I joined RoSPA and being told to go slower. Quite the opposite was true. Its all about making good fast - BUT SAFE- progress, Everyone should do it.

Interesting video and ride there matey, I passed my bike test in 1979, after going to a proper training school, so that'll probably give my age away, but the first thing I did was buy the Police riding manual and an advanced riding book, and I've put into practice that advice ever since. But about 15 years ago, I met a class one bike cop, through another mate, and we went for a and I use the word "bimble" lightly, on some pretty fast A-roads and he tried to lose me, when we got to where we were headed, he patted me on the back and said "well done mate, I thought I'd lose you and couldn't, so very well done" I was very pleased by that praise, as a guy who has never really had or done any advanced training at least not formally.. perhaps despatching in London in the early 80's helped. Sadly I've just sold my most recent bike, and don't know if I'll be getting another at this moment, sad days after 45 years in the hot seat...

What I learned on this course, the Police riders handbook, and another advanced course saved my life a few times in my first 5 years of riding. Probably saved more than that, but as an experienced rider now, I don’t ever have close calls due to my defensive technique (don’t read that as slow). This and the police handbook should be mandatory in my view. It’s gold dust. Edit: *gold dust

Should i continue? Passed my test in 1962! IAM about 10 years ago. Since then just a handful of miles per year, not ideal. Wiped the cobwebs of my beloved VFR 750 (new to now 28 years) not to mention my own spiders. Returned yesterday from my round the world trip, well, Portland/Weymouth. Just 300 miles over three days, survived but not happy with my riding. Bike Safe would have had a field day, many A4 pages of negative views, me thinks. Thanks Lamb Chops for your timely video. At 80 I will be booking a refresher course of some sort. Eye opener about your 3 overtakes. I puckered up with the Tractor/trailer, thought the wide entrance on right was the farm entrance. The other two seemed (& still do) fine by me.

Overtake tips were a reminder for me that l dont know it all, l hope l do take note of junctions looming ahead, but maybe not driveways so much. Also "Reasons not to overtake" mindset duly noted.

Enjoyed this buddy, I’ve been fully bike licensed here in Canada for 25 years myself. We don’t have anything quite like this, especially with the police. In fact I try to avoid them if you know what I mean. Haha. But found it fascinating, and helpful! I’m sure I’ve picked up bad habits along the way 🙈🙈 Great edit as usual 🔝🎬🎥👍🏻

I did my advanced last year, via Roadcraft Nottingham, part sponsored by Derbyshire police. Passed & was really happy with the result. Now I'm a much more confident rider, took a while for the learning to be absorbed. I'll likely go back in a few years & do it again. Let the teaching of the lessons sink in, you will be a better rider from it. There are no perfect riders, just riders continually learning.

Chopsie, I think you overtook when there was a junction on the right during one of your Tuono 660 reviews which I noticed at the time. I've done IAM and RoSPA in the car but not yet on the bike, but I found the insurers that offered a discount were more expensive and I could get insurance cheaper elsewhere without any discount for passing the IAM or RoSPA tests. The Govt. could 'Nudge' drivers to take advanced tests by waiving the Insurance Premium Tax on car and motorcycle insurance for those that have passed the advanced tests.

Last February I went for an overtake with a lay-by on my right.. without any warning the car I was overtaking swung right into that lay-by. Result was a broken femur in 6 places, and a smashed knee resulting in me needing a total knee replacement… 40 years of riding experience and although I made a legal move I just didn’t expect the car to swerve into a lay-by on the opposite side of the road☹️☹️

Hope you’re OK. One of my fellow Observers in my local IAM club is an ex ambulance driver (who’s done a lot of “tidying up” and he says any side junction or opening on the right is very simply a “no” for an overtake). I now look a bit tame on long straights when there’s a hint of a house, gate, etc.. hope it hasn’t put you off and you view it as lesson learnt and glad you wanted to share for others’ benefit.

The 2 second rule or rather the more than the 2 second rule, cos at speed higher than 40 mph on should give it at least 3 seconds behind any other vehicle. 2 seconds minimum is good around town but rather than think about it and forever counting it just stay one lamp lost apart. They are approx, the distance to stop in at speeds usually up to 40 mph. On faster out of town road then double that lamp post to two and that will be the safe distance up to 60 mph its simplesss.. easy and safe. ...

I grew up riding bikes in fields, skate parks and quite often, running away from plod. One day I went to overtake a heavy, I screwed it up, and as soon as I was off-side and along-side the trailer, I noticed another heavy coming the other direction. I was extremely lucky to survive that encounter, and decided that was the point I should learn to ride properly. I've done BikeSafe and a few others, highly recommended. I now volunteer to go for a ride & pass on my understanding of RoadCraft to anyone that happens to be near me, if they want to. I don't teach - I offer my opinion, and equally, I don't charge for it either (I just love riding). Loved your distance when you were 3rd in the lineup. When you say "not sure what the speed limit is" - follow traffic in front of you for 30 secs, any street lights? Any repeater signs telling you anything? If no, NSL rules apply. Good overtake on the van (but missed a lifesaver). Good catch on your space when stopped at the roadworks - if you're aware of it, you'll fix it over time. White car overtake - double take in the mirrors, but no life saver. Tractor - very brief lifesaver, but there was one - not sure I would have done the overtake until after the driveway on the right, but still. Nice that the copper picked up on those. The van overtake had a nearside junction, not an off side - answer there would be to ride off-side for a while, hang back, then go.

Nice one, Chops! Funnily enough, I'm doing the same BikeSafe on my Kawasaki Z1000 (same starting point and I expect same route/destination) this Thursday. The BSMC is kind of "my patch" as I ride past it on my daily commute. Always find it useful to get some feedback during the workshop, although I'm "one of those" who's done the IAM. I'm not sure what you meant by that comment, though. I think advanced riders get a very undeserved bad rep. In my local group there are very few GSs, no pipes or slippers, all sorts of bikes from rat bikes through 250cc, scooters through to Hypers, Busas, Tuonos... all sorts! And all bloody quick and smooth 👍
