Hey, these are the pre gens we used at the D&D Open at GenCon this year! Different adventure, but I loved these magic items in play. They were impactful but not game breaking, so I’d totally use them again.

Nikos magic item is literally the most broken fucking item in the lot. Summon Celestial as 5th level spell summons a Celestial Spirit with AC 16 or AC 18 with 40 Hit Points, that makes two attacks at a +9 to hit that's either a 600 foot ranged attack dealing 2d6 + 7 Radiant damage or a 5 ft. reach melee attack dealing 1d10 + 8 Radiant damage and giving one creature witihin 10 feet of the target or the celestial 1-10 Temporary Hit Points. That's either 28 Radiant from 600 ft. range or 27 Radiant in melee with 11 Temporary Hit Points distributed per round. On top of that, either celestial form (melee or ranged) can heal one target 2d8 + 5 Hit Points as an action 1/day. This creature can be summoned for free, no spell slot required, SIX times a day? Such an OP item especially at low levels! x3

I'm a storyboard artist working in animation. On my channel I do "storyboard artist reacts" to the D&D cartoon episodes including talking about the monsters adapted from the AD&D books at the time. I also ran a couple of campaigns adapting episodes such as In Search of the Dungeon Master and Servant of Evil. It's super fun I'm a big fan of the series. DM’d this adventure tonight for our local Adventurer’s League and it was a blast. Mix of experienced and new players, ran with Sheila, Bobby, Eric and Diana. The changes for Martial characters made for some amazing shenanigans with their Magic Items. I’ll probably run this again for my friends, and I’d wholly recommend it as a taster for some of the new changes.

Chapter 2 of the 2024 Players Handbook opens with an illustration of four (five?) of the characters - Hank, Diana, Presto and Bobby - plus what might be a bas-relief of Uni. In D&D Adventure (and, I think, Stormwreck Isle) there’s an illustration of Hank and Diana battling a blue dragon. The cover of the 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide features Venger. I’m guessing we’ll see more illustrations of the cartoon characters in that book and possibly the Monster Manual. It would be ironic if Dungeon Master weren’t in the DMG.

The Cloak of Invisibility was previously a Legendary item, and I would bet that if those other items had been created in 2014 they would likely have also been legendary. This may indicate that they are upping magic items' power to make them more interesting for the 2024 DMG. 1-3 hours of unbreakable invisibility for a 4th level rogue is a good time!

Or it's telling tables which want a grim, gritty, low magic adventure that they are doing it wrong. 5e already gave almost every subclass magic which is a huge problem in a Dragonlance adventure let alone Darksun. That said players seem to want broken overpowered characters with vast magic items and very weak monsters to kill.

These magic items are pretty epic. They sound like some legendary items like they did in the show. I also like that the monster examples are bullywugs. I remember bullywugs being in the show quite a bit. (I actually found the series on DVD and rewatched it a few years ago.)

Also, if you happened to choose Arcana as your field of expertise for the Wizard's scholar feature you most likely have a +17 Arcana check by the time you get your first 9th lv slot. Making the DC19 check all but guaranteed.

Thunderous Greatclub sounds like an improved version of Hammer of Thunderbolts but gets the powers without having the other magic items attuned\equipped. I think the Thunderous Greatclub should be legendary status because at very rare it is broken. IF this is the standard for very rare, I fear major power creep of magic items. What will the legendary level be able to do? Create an entire continent with only a whisper of a magic word? Looks like the quarterstaff took the other thing from the hammer of thunderbolts which was thrown and return.

The art of course is typical for modern WotC, just browse through the new Player's Handbook, it explains a lot on their art direction. And just to add, that group D&D characters is not a diverse group to WotC. I believe they felt they needed to add more diversity to try and level it out to their ideological standards.

I like that Hank's Bow didn't have charges, you can use all of its abilities as often as you want. Bobby's Club is probably a little broken, giving you a 20 Strength... at least for a 4th level character. But I don't see how they could get around that and still have it be true to the show. Diana's Staff was a little underwhelming for me (at least compared to the first 2 I mentioned.) Maybe change the deflection thing to Proficiency times per day? Eric's Shield seems to be about right, except the bubble should be about twice the size it is (needs to be able to protect the entire party against Tiamat's breath attacks after all.) Presto's Hat is a little meh. Can only do it's special thing once per short rest, and with Presto's Arcana score he is never failing that check, so the special effects are never gonna trigger. Sheila's Cloak seems about right. I would probably change it to "Proficiency times per long rest", but it reflects the show pretty well. Oh, maybe one change I would make: "During the one hour duration you can raise or lower the hood as a bonus action, which will make you visible/invisible again without ending the effect's duration". Just seems more accurate to the show. Yeah, the mace is powerful at their character level, but other than that, yawn.

About Bobby's club: you can have 19 str RAW as lvl4 character, sure the item is op, but the score is not that far off

@@rehakadam5566 But if you had a 19 Str at 4th level you have neglected other things. By having an item that boosts your Str to 20, you get to focus on things other than Str. So it isn't JUST about getting a free 20 str, it is about the other things you didn't have to ignore.

20 strength for a level 4 character isn't that broken. If you are a Strength based character, you'll likely have an 18 Strength anyway- and the +1 to hit/damage doesn't make that much of a difference.

@@jimmyrepine8952 It is the fact that you can use your ASIs for things other than strength that makes it brokenish, not the score itself. Normally, when you are playing a Barbarian, you have to worry about whether to raise Strength or Constitution, but with an item like this, it frees you up to just focus on Con.

@@johncox7169 Sure, you can. Doesn't make this broken (or even partly). Unless you had this before 4th level- you've already spent that feat. Even if your strength was a 16- that makes the club essentially a +2 weapon. And if you decide to use your ASI from the half-feats or a full ASI on other stats, you're locking this item in as one of your attunement slots. Very good- sure. Broken- not so much.

The mace and the cloak are just insulting in that line up. I'd def homebrew 1 or 2 more things for each. Like letting the Mace cast healing spells while also being able to cast light. Witht he Cloak I would add the properties of the Cloak of Displacment and or the Ring of Evasion effects

Guess the original cast of characters was too white/not diverse enough so they added Niko, which is a shame for her since her magic item is the most lack luster IMO. Shelia's cloak is lackluster as well but SUPER powerful. It is Greater Invisibility without Conc. and lasts an hour.

(It would not exist if they they said "your Strength is raised to 20" or something similar. But they don't.) So, what happens if your Strength is already 20 when you attune to this item? Clearly, your score "is already equal to (...) that score". Ergo, your Strength can't be 20 anymore, per the rule. What does happen to it? What value does it changes to?

Olivier is right. A strict logical reading raises a contradiction. It essentially says that while attuned, your score is 20 unless it's already 20. So if it's already 20, what happens while attuned? It can't stay 20, based on this wording. Though, and I could be wrong, I don't think he is actually confused, just pointing out bad writing.

​@@m_capsa7093I really dont agree that there's any wording issue or contradiction. The item changes your strength to 20, unless your strength is already 20 or higher. Unless being the key word. If your strength is at a 22 when you attune to this item, then the item doesnt affect your score in any way since you dont meet the requirements for it to affect your score.

@@KIDFISTOMFC except it doesn't say that it "changes" your strength unless it is 20. It says while attuned it _is_ 20 unless it's 20. (This is for the fun of diving in the logic and just arguing some antics, er, semantics.)

This makes me cringe tbh... the game was already a bunch of unkillable super heroes... these should all be legendary not Very Rare (setting aside the idiocy of that limiting factor).
