I kinda want to set up multiple tables you can roll on for magic materials. Like, sure, 75% in the market for the materials to craft a bag of holding, right? But if a character is related to a thieves guild they can try the black market, or if a character was/is a merchant, they can try their supplier connections for another roll. Heck, if there's a character who is or is associated with a noble, they can try to roll there. You could even make different conditions apply depending on the source for materials, like the black market connections could be cheaper but carry heat from them being stolen or illegal, or the noble connection could have a 90% chance of the materials being available, but would be more expensive
@albertonishiyama19802 ай бұрын
Another way, in this case to make it kinda more difficult but not really, would be to define that some materials can only be used on some equips. You can roll the % dice for basically every single type, but if you find "magic wood" you can only use for Carver Tools (or some mainly Wood weapon made using other tools like Halberds), if you find a magic ore you can only use it in smithing... The good part is that you can make it as complicated or general as you want. Separating by type of spell (arcane / divine), type of tool used (Wood, metal, etc.), type of item (weapon, armor, ring) and such.
@zeekeno8232 ай бұрын
@@albertonishiyama1980 yeah. It depends on what kinda game I'd be running I think. A simpler game where there's pros and cons for each source of raw material, or a more difficult style where I'd roll on a table for the type of raw material. Example being, if the adventures used the rogues connections to the crime syndicate, they could happen to have a poached displacer beast's pelt. The adventures could then use the dimensional warping ability to make anything from a bag of holding, portable hole, displacer cloak, etc

The cleanest way of using monster bits is: the monetary worth you gain as loot, is the quality of body parts that body is worth. Fewer charts and clunky rules
@JazzyBassy2 ай бұрын
Yeah "a GP worth of fitting Raw Material as treasure" is a really good way to make something with magic items. At the end of the day it's flavored treasure but you get to give out more of it if you make it specific to a type of magic item, using the player's ideas for inspiration, and make selling it inefficient. The three Dragonshards in Eberron are already a great way of setting some rules for specific raw materials.

Another interesting tidbit, is that the range of values for magic items is now always near the maximum of what it was before. A very rare item used to cost between 5,000-50,000, now it always costs 40,000. A rare item was 501-5000gp, it is always 4,000gp now. I forgot that their listed crafting prices were always the absolute maximum value for that magic item, so they could in theory be purchased for significantly cheaper than crafting them yourselves in the old handbook, but that's now fixed.

One thing I have taken to doing for 'looting monsters': The party can get ONE (1) part from a monster that is viable as a magical component. This takes 10 minutes. After that any parts are only useful for trade goods/art objects in price value, as the inherent magic of the creature expires. Each party member can do this to ONE (1) creature, if there are multiple monsters. I also break them into 'tiers' for determining cost: Common (CR 0-1), 15 gp Uncommon (CR 2-6), 50gp Rare (CR 7-11), 500gp Very Rare (CR 12-16), 2500gp Legendary (CR 17+), 10,000gp Ironically, this works BETTER with the 2024 rules. And yes, very rare and legendary items do indeed require more monster parts, as the search for appropriate materials should be part of the fun.

I do think having crafting costs described this way makes the crafter feat much more attractive. It's still "only" a 20% discount, but at especially rare+ the amount of money you save on materials is enough to make a magic item of the tier below it. The minimal crafting time becomes much more of a factor at that point, but if you are in the style of game where you have a lot of down time making magic items becomes more reasonable. I can't tell from the video if a helper needs to meet all of the requirements for a magic item. It does just say someone can help but I'd say its reasonable a skilled hireling in arcana (wizard apprentice or something) or in an applicable crafting skill (blacksmith for magic armor) could reasonably help. Consider a rare item, you save 400 gold on materials, and a skilled hireling is 2gp/day. You just halved the craft time, and still have leftover money. If your DM says its reasonable you could have more than one (I think of something like a cauldron of plenty, where more than one hireling would be reasonable) you can decrease that time to craft by 3 and still have extra leftover money that you saved. Conveniently at 2gp/day listed in PHB24 the time to craft is equal to the cost to have someone halve the craft time in gp.
@aimerw2 ай бұрын
The assistant needs Arcana and an applicable Tool proficiency as well. The problem with the Crafter feat is that the 20% cost reduction does not apply to magic items, nor would they apply to crafting costs because those costs are not items - although, I could see a DM allowing it. The Tool proficiencies are also not very strong (even if you do have Arcana too), since you can get them from Custom Backgrounds, Hirelings, and Bastion Facilities. Hirelings in particularly are an enormous blow to Crafter in this respect, since they are dirt cheap and potentially unlimited (if not actually). The costs to create the magic item require that you have access to the materials, which there is a 25% chance in a town and 75% chance in a city - you can also only check once in a 7 day period (not defined if once per magic item type and/or once per settlement). So, you are not crafting without almost certainly _also_ having the ability to hire Hirelings to do the work, and there is a limit to how many you can have on the go at the same time anyway. Bastions do not state the cost comes via the normal method for crafting magic items, but that has a limit on itself anyway and provides the assistants for itself. The last blow to Crafter is that magic items are now controlled loot by tier, and quite generous. For example, for a four person party you are expected to have acquired 21 Uncommon magic items by the end to Tier 2 (level 10), with loot tables giving about a third of that as consumables. While spell scrolls are always going to be wanted and thus crafted (especially for Thief Rogues) they do not require a Tool (just Arcana), and most other magic items have attunement limiting the usefulness of acquiring more. Uncommon and greater potions might be the best crafts that require a Tool and no attunement, but then you can just get that via a Custom Background even if the DM denies Hirelings. Again, there is also a limit on acquiring the materials as once per week (possibly per potion type, possibly per settlement), with not even a 100% chance at succeeding - although, potion materials are halved in cost.

It's not bad, IMO. The discount from Crafter is meh, but if you want to be able to craft whatever, then 4 Artisan Tools Proficiencies gets you most stuff (Woodcarver's Tools, Tinkerer's Tools, Smith's Tools, and Jeweler's Tools all added together let you craft almost any magic item you like). It doesn't come with Arcana so it only works if you have that already from something else, but if you wanted to craft whatever, then you're good to go. If the DM is generous, the Crafter discount might also apply to the materials to craft magic items, and that would make it quite a bit better.

If I chose to use the 2024 rules, I would rule that if you want to craft a magic item, have proficiency in the Arcana skill, but do *not* have proficiency in the associated tools, you can work with another individual that is proficient with said tool and thereby craft the item, but the time and cost to craft would remain the same, as there is effectively only one fully competent crafter betwixt the two of you. This might also mean that you cannot have any reduction in time and cost, as you already have somebody assisting you (as per rule limitations). Just a thought.

I don't mind multiple videos at once. As for crafting, I don't think the "crafters" at WotC have a solid grasp on time. Keep in mind, none of what I am about to say is a reflection on you at all. The length of time required to craft some of these items in the real world under the same conditions used during what is considered the medieval era is a fraction of what is suggested. If it really took most of a year to craft plate armor, most smiths would go out of buisness. Some of the fanciest most high end armor took between 6 - 9 months and a majority of that time was spent on fine detail work such as filigree and ornate design. When a smith was hired to make such a masterpiece, it was usually for a king or nobleman and they were hansomely compensated for it. This offset all of the standard buisness they would have otherwise completed. Hence the ridiculous cost normally affiliated with such a piece of work. I have always operated under a sliding scale for creation of items, magic or otherwise, based on the complexity of the world the players are in. Saying that the cost of creation in a low magic/low tech world is the same as a high magic/high tech one is just foolish. I realize the old system with a massive variable was not the solution either, but hundreds of days to make a dagger just because it has a magical property added to it is madness.

I personally do not mind multiple videos a day. Can't you schedule the less time sensitive ones for a when you'll have a lull, and release the time sensitive ones immediately?

I feel like this system doesnt truly works because the gap of price is astronomical It works for low price items but 100 days on a spyglass? In that time an average dnd 5e adventuree has reached level 20 and has thousands of gold to spend on mundane stuff
@theodorehunter47652 ай бұрын
Depends on the campaign. I have played in games where the party is running from dungeon to dungeon slaying monsters. I have also played in games where we sit around in a city for a month waiting for work. If you let your DM know ahead of time that crafting is something you want to do, they can generally slow the pace of the game down enough to allow time for it. Also, with Bastions, you can have your hirelings craft stuff for you while you adventure. Finally, a spyglass is NOT trivial to make. It requires at least two perfectly shaped and polished lenses set at the perfect distance from each other in a (usually collapsible) tube.

Make as many videos as works for your schedule. I watch them as time permits, no set schedule

Can a sorcerer scribe a scroll with a metamagic? I really like the crafting rules of 3e. Was much easier to make something useful while not making named items in books.
@NerdImmersion2 ай бұрын
As in the metamagic version of the spell? Technically no, but I'd be willing to work with the player on it

I never understood spell scroll scribing, and I think I never will. How are you supposed to invest even 10 days x 8h for ONE lvl4 spell scroll? In what world and what kind of scenario is this a feasible thing to do?

@ratherfungames2 ай бұрын
@envytee9659 In that case, your stated reason is irrelevant. I have a hard time picturing scroll use as a reaction in any fictional setting. Like, I could picture Gandalf or Harry Potter reading a scroll over the course of a few seconds and casting a spell from it. I can't picture them reading a scroll a split second before an arrow would have pierced their chest to ward the missile off. But I'm open to being convinced.
@envytee96592 ай бұрын
@@ratherfungames No, my stated reason is very relevant. Its the reason why I think it should be usable as a reaction. As for the timing... well, they'd need to still speak and act out the verbal and somatic components for a reaction spell, regardless of whether its on a scroll or not. It takes the same time to say the verbal component of a spell, as it does to read a spell. Reactions have never necessarily been "split second responses" either. If someone casts Magic Missile from 5 feet away or 120 feet away... its still the same reaction to put up shield... despite the practical difference in time it would take for both attacks to hit.

I hate the time duration that Crafting in PHBs takes... the campaigns I play (have played) never go on for months etc...they are usually tighter timelines. I much prefer how the Dungeon Dudes with Dungeons of Drakkenheim are creating their crafting: You have to collect components through adventuring (not grinding mats) and once you have the necessary components - craft it right away ... boom, done. They have added difficulty levels by needing more rare forges or magic academies to craft higher rarity items - totally fair and cool. But I love that it's just "if you have the stuff, make it then and there." Hundreds of days to craft Plate Armour = What's the point ?!? 1) my campaign will never last that long 2) why not just buy it outright because looting 1500GP will take far less than 150 days of adventuring. I want crafting to be an activity that I can do to forego either gold costs or, much more importantly, time. otherwise.. f it - i'll just buy it.

As usual with WOTC I'm 50/50. On the good side, I appreciate the expanded rules for crafting. Though will probably still use Hammund's Guide to Harvesting for "monster bits" On the other hand that rule that you must be able to cast the spell the magic item grants - **I am straight up going to ignore** because that is risible nonsense. Rogue. Ooh a ring of invisibility! Oh wait, I'm a thief. Nevermind *toss* Or as happened in our Curse of Strahd game my Celestial Warlock picked up a staff that could cast Cone of Cold, but Cone of Cold isn't a Warlock spell so I guess that wouldn't have worked unless I gave it to the sorceror. I think that misses the whole point of some magic items that they let you do things you otherwise cannot.
@cezarsiqueira542 ай бұрын
I could be wrong, but the spell requirement is to create a magic item, not to use it. A rogue can use a ring of invisibility. They can't craft it unless they have a casting feature that allows them to cast the invisibility spell. Your celestial warlock can cast a cone of cold from the staff. If you want to create a rod that allows cone to cone casting, you need to prepare it for crafting.
@richardhealy2 ай бұрын
@@cezarsiqueira54 As I said, a rule I intend to flat out ignore.
@NerdImmersion2 ай бұрын
Yeah... having the spell isn't a requirement to use the item, is a requirement to craft the item. You couldn't craft that staff without knowing cone of cold, but your warlock could absolutely still use it
