I’ve had boats my whole life, currently have a 1997 sea ray 500 Sundancer with twin Detroit 6V92 diesels. The ONLY way to go is diesel with this size vessel. Do not electric swap it, that’s just stupid. Do not convert it to gasoline, you’ll burn through a TON more fuel. Diesels are the most efficient option and they do give you plenty of speed. If you want speed your prop will have a bigger impact than an engine swap... I love your channel but you have A LOT to learn about boating my friend. There is a significant amount of good advice in these comments. Take it seriously.

Boating with Cody well, my last boat which was a ‘91 Wellcraft Corsica 34’ with twin 454’s I can tell you first hand making the switch to diesels has actually saved me money over the course of a season lol crazy to think that a boat 16 feet longer, 2 feet wider, and a whole lot heavier is cheaper to run than a smaller twin engine gas boat. Plus, it’s a MUCH smoother running boat

I seen a few electric swapped sail boats all 3 sank because of silly stuff like the exhaust port was not plugged properly on a $750k boat. You can't just rip an engine out of a boat and shoehorn in something else with out all the R&D that goes with it.

Just fix the engine that's in it. The last thing you want is some goofy engine that no marina is going to have parts for. Or have custom one off adapters that fail and leave you out in the middle of no where. Its a Cummins, even if the marina doesn't have the parts it would only take a few phone calls to any heavy duty truck or equipment shop to find parts for those engines. Nearly every town has a truck or tractor repair shop. And being diesel, you don't have an ignition system at all, its literally an easier engine to work on. Yank the engine, and fix it. I'm not 100% sure but those engines are probably sleeved, so even if one cylinder is trashed the block should still be good and you can just replace the damaged sleeve, piston and rod without changing out anything else.

BlueDually 4X4....yes, yes, yes...👍👍 If they are not sleeved it could be, unless the cylinder's majorly washed out....if he is hell bent on an engine swap, 1st choice would be pull both engines & go back in with newer ungraded Cummins. 2cd, the Cats, for all the same reasons you pointed out for the Cummins. BUT DON'T GO WITH THE DETROITS.... Not that they are horrible motors...for this application they are just wong, for a myriad of reasons. As for the Lamborghini engines, it could be done, it is more a question of should it be....??? Operating, maintenance cost, & reliability...????🤔 Electric, honestly I'd love to see that one but with out the solid-state battery, or something like it, it wouldn't be practical, not to mention the infrastructure along the water just isn't there.....But good luck & sorry about the bad luck....!!!!

@@macheifach I'm not a "boat specialist", but I do know that with a boat of that size and weight you want diesel engines because you need engines that put out horsepower and torque at low RPM's. Yes, he could put two Lambo' engines in it, but they will need to be run at high RPM's in order to produce the type of hp. and torque needed to move it. That means he will burn through A LOT of gas in a short period of time. Prob' around 4 gallons per mile at cruising speeds, maybe more because two Lambo engines will be working hard at cruising speeds, where those two Deisel engines will be running at lower RPM's and prob' using 1 gallon per mile. Gas engines are just not good when it comes to pushing heavy boats.

As far as powerplants, I'm also kinda leaning towards keeping the Cummins engines. I'm sure you know that there's a significant difference between engines designed for marine duty and ones designed for automotive duty. Marine engines are engineered to be able to stay at one speed consistently, automotive engines cannot reliably do that. The cooling and drive systems are very different, as well. Do it the right way - pull both engines and refresh/refurbish the good engine, and if the knocker is beyond saving, get a replacement and refresh that one, too. You're really better off with a powertrain that almost any marina or heavy duty equipment shop can service or supply parts for, in case of emergency. Plus, with modifying different engines to fit, you run the risk of those modifications not being "seaworthy" and leaving you stranded out on the water. It's one thing when you're just farting around on a local inland lake or river, but when you're on or near the ocean and traveling along shipping channels, traversing large deep rivers, etc., the reliability factor of keeping with what works can quite literally save your life. Do some research on those Cummins mills, I'd be willing to bet you can made some upgrades to improve power and reliability. Or, gosh, at the very LEAST, look into upgrading to more modern diesel boat engines that are better all around, because there are definitely better choices than what's in there.

I agree with a slow leaking oil seal in the turbo. Its a diesil so after many hours of use at cruising speed an small amount of extra smoke wont be noticable. Especially when there is fires around making it harder to smell it. Its probably done bad things to rod bearings and maybe scored cylinder walls. But for something that size, for range and fuel economy diesiel is the go. Petrol is fine for say the 17 foot boat i have, but its a trailer boat, so going through 140 litres in a day with the 220hp 262ci v6 is fine because it goes straight back on the trailer. Its a bit of fun but, 60+ mph in a smallish boat on the water. Feels way faster then it is.

Something you can understand and work on... best choice - learn marine diesel. High performance gasoline engines are a real pain and safety hazard if you are going to spend any amount of time actually cruising around. Especially with your continued lack of concern modifying stuff that is engineered for safe operation (not a negative, I find it entertaining all the goofs, but...). At least you won't explode running diesel. Also, for that region, you were crazy to remove the radar instead of fixing it, especially if you intend any night outings or anchorages.

Chris, 10 years I fished in Alaska. You do not want to change those motors. Keep them, rebuild, bigger turbos??? Hulls can only take the knots they’re designed for. You can throw all the HP you want at something, but will be limited by the hull. If you want more speed, look at dropping those props and add some jet power!!!

Honestly as a boat guy.. you have two very solid power plants. I would definitely NOT do any weird swap because parts and adapters are going to be super had to find and could leave you stranded. If I was in your shoes, I would pull them both out and have them rebuilt. Being diesels, they can make a hell of a lot more power. When you rebuild them, head stud them, bigger injectors, better smoother turbos, and add a fuel system and that’s it man

Sometimes owning a boat doesn’t equate to respect for the water. You need to understand what is important in a boat and why, rather than just hacking away and thinking you’re doing the right thing.

If you only wanna do day trips and don't care about fuel effiency then do the lambo swap or gas swap! Also lastly changing the engine away from stock with devalue the boat.
