To be fair it is easier to dodge and kill the enemies that can only shoot in the 4 cardinal directions or the 4 45* angle directions since the first person mod allows you to shoot at say 27* angles instead of only the 4 cardinal directions without requiring momentum to do it. so enemies like Loki and the 4 way brimstone enemies you can dodge while still being able to attack since you are not limited to attacking at the 4 cardinal directions without requiring momentum. Edit: With that said, some enemies are a lot harder and some enemies are a lot easier, makes it balance out pretty good since enemies like Envy and Pride area lot harder while enemies like Loki and the Brimstone enemies are a lot easier.

Ah ray-casting! The way that old 3D games were made (Doom, wolfenstein, duke nukem, etc.). It's the technique of making a 2d room and then using collisions to display images on screen at a certain size to make them seem closer or further away (That's the reason why the wall tiles look funky when you get close to them). It's always awesome to see people use Ray Casting to pull off things like this! In theory, it's not a difficult thing to program (just display images at different sizes depending on where the player is)... but I don't want to touch ray casts with a 10ft pole because, I mean just look at this!

The technique used here isn't raycasting at all. With raycasting objects and walls are static and look normal. Besides, rewriting the entire renderer to use raycasting is probably not feasible with the modding tools, and wouldn't run smoothly. In the mod, everything's made of scaled 2d sprites that always face the screen. I'm assuming that the actual game is rendered in a 3d space, since most engines and basically all GPUs nowadays are designed to run calculations for 3d spaces. Sprites and an orthogonal camera used to make the game look 2d, similar to how other roguelites like gungeon do it. The mod probably either modifies the existing camera or uses some new view matrices to calculate where the sprites should be drawn and how large to draw them, and then overlays the new view over the normal view on the screen. Edit: looking at the mod page, it's probably the latter, as the creator describes needing to do some extra calculations then render the room for a second time.

I'm still pretty new to programming, so sorry for spreading false information. Modifying the existing camera, if the game really is rendered in a 3D space than that sounds like the simplest method to manage something like this, otherwise they created and used a new view matrices to create this effect... that sounds like it took a lot of time and dedication! I guess this mod is one big programmer flex on the rest of the modding community!

The objects (enemies, tears, rocks...) in the game are already calculated in three dimensions - as for example you can see how's the height in the tears when Monstro fires. I know it's easier said than done, but my guess is that this mod translates these objects and renders them into a first person perspective.

my guess how this was made is using something similar to raymarching? where you do mathematical equations to build up a 3D shape in a 2D environment by tricking the eye of thinking this is 3D so the creator mapped out the cords and placed everything to how it would look like in 2D and the reason we see some charging enemies look weird is because it takes the current sprite and applies it to its new position and can't really make it face a different direction because again, it's using the sprite currently used in the normal 2D gameplay, you're really just limited to make things rotate unless they place a different entity with the sprite so they can change the facing at will that's my long assumption of how this mod works, a really well thought and cool mod
