My compliments to the instructor. Even to my amateurish eyes I could see he fought everyone on a level they could reach without mollycoddling them. I have seen some instructors who seem to delight in beating their students just to show that they can. Very lucky Skall to have found a competent place in which to train.

It's really cool to see the variety of people at this place. Men, women, bigger people, smaller people, tall and short and some more physically fit than others. Different levels of skill and experience all over the place, but everyone having fun and learning together. I hope that when I eventually visit my local HEMA group they have as wide a range as this group seems to have, it would make it slightly less intimidating.

***** I think it is cool they are doing something. It is a sad thing when people who are overweight do not become active because they scared of being ridiculed for their present state of being. I have seen many people go from being "Whales" and fat guys (as I know Whale is a rude term for overweight women) to not being in my Dojo and practice.

The rapier fight was much more different than I imagined... I thought it would be more of a back and forth exchange with both parties parrying until one exposes an opening rather than clashing together and breaking off, it definitely wasn't elegant and flowery but the moves were executed with precision and strength as if they were trying to go for the kill as opposed to putting on a show. This is one of the first sword fighting videos I have seen outside of movie territory and it looks awesome.

Sword fighting, along with a variety of other disciplines, has a sense of elegance towards it, in my book it can be considered 'art'. To me the quote is trying to target your motives with your skill in swinging a blade, not the actual practice.

From what I learned from fencing " Do not look at your opponent, or his blade look through him" Basically it's a memo to remind you to not focus one thing and in aikido they told to not focus at all and feel the energy.

I was digging around in my basement the other day and stumbled across an old rapier from the mid-late 1800s :D I don't know mutch about the origin but I do know that it was the practice sword of my (some amount of greats) grandfather used. He was a captain of the russian Tzars bodyguards. The blade itself was extremely dull but it had the name of the maker on it. I note the lady first seen at 0:50 is, I think, somewhat intimidated by Erik and is tensing up, thus slowing herself down a bit. Despite this, I note her foil defence is impressive towards the end (when everyone is slowing down due to being worn out); I counted, I think, three or four blocks of strikes from Erik in mere moments. Certainly -I- wouldn't want to get into the ring with her. ;-] Far too lethal for me.

Hi i just want to share that when using a stick try not to cock back too far. Try punching forward and cut down while doing a full extension of your arm. Step forward as you cut, even a little bit, and twist your hips. it will make for a forceful cut that is not quite so telegraphic and its quite easy to recover from. Love your vids!

Not bad sparring. This is probally from a while ago, and my proficiency is not with weapons (plus i'm sure this individual has noticed this and improved since then). But just wanted to point out the the need for great footwork. There were a few points during the video were your opponents crossed stepped throwing themselves off balance, and leaving themselves wide open by not being able to control their distance between your weapon and their opened target areas (if you haven't dicussed it withyou! em, just mention to your friends to watch their footwork. Cross stepping does have it's place in hand to hand combat (though it still does leave you open and off balance as well). But from my limited experience, there is very little use for spin attacks and leaves you open even more so (which as you can imagine, is even more dangerous to the user when weapons are involved.) Still, thank for all the first person view. It was very informative. Don't get to spar a lot these days, so love to look up these kinds of videos. Also, wanted to let you know that the hard work you put into your channel is noticed and apperciated by us. (Don't have much experience with armed combat, unfortunately as previously state, so definitely love to get any chance to learn something new about the technique and history behind it. Your channel does just that, so thank you!)Btw, hope your shoulder has been healing up well.

Ok, now I’m reconsidering my choice of what my favourite sword probably would be. Rapier sparring seems a bit... nerve wracking. It’s long and stabby, which suits my preferences, but I’m not sure I would be good at all the preliminary positioning they do with the blades. I’d fuck up and cop it in the throat in seconds.
