Here is another example for those who need one: So, how about Bob, he wants a house to live in. He is pricing various homes, brick ranch-style houses, 2 story vinyl-clad houses, he even looked at a mobile home. He stops and asks himself what is it that I really need for a house? He reasons that anything he would consider a habitable house would contain several irreducible factors: 1.) it would have walls 2.) it would have some kind of roof 3.) it would have some kind of door or entryway 4.) it would provide protection from the elements. Bob has just come up with what he sees as the First Principles for what he considers a house. Now Bob reasons from just those First Principles and realizes that a cargo shipping container matches all of those factors but it was not something he would have thought of if he simply thought of what kind of house he wanted. He arrived at a somewhat unconventional idea for a house by reducing what it was he really wanted down to its most basic elements. He then decides to build a shipping container tiny house because it matches his requirements and perhaps for its economic benefits and trendy unconventionality.

I would suggest that when Elon Musk asked for the prices of the rocket materials, he was NOT applying first principles, as one could ask, why do we need aluminum, titanium, copper and carbon fiber? I would have asked, why were those materials needed, and then asked why again until we truly got down to the first principles. The material costs are more like fourth principles and nowhere near first principles. I would have thought that the first principles would have been something like F=ma, Newton's laws of motion, and Kepler's laws of orbits...those are the first principles, I would think. They are immutable axioms applicable to space flight.
@Isaac-jq4qe
@Isaac-jq4qe 9 ай бұрын
I'm thinking there was a solution to his cost challenge at that level of "fourth principles"(in your words). If there was none(pershaps it still accumulated to the same cost he was trying to avoid), he would have had to further break it down to the point of "why these materials are needed in the first place" then choosing different materials that fulfill same or better fundamental purpose and then calculating cost(building up solution for a cheaper battery)

Most people will not get this way of thinking, no matter how many times you explain it, it falls under a mysterious approach to life itself. You quote the Bible, well done, now consider the words of Jesus at Math:11.25 "I thank you Father, that you have hidden these truths from the intellectual ones" This is a different form of intelligence coupled to a heavy dose of humility, truth is sometimes not comprehended by the common man. If first principle thinking were common, we would be living in world of peace and harmony. First principles do not allow for corruption and debauchery or greed and selfishness. Again, Jesus said, "there is more happiness in giving than in receiving" try to get todays generation to understand that! Good luck with that! Here is an example of first principle thinking... morality trumps technology or wealth! Try LEARNING with humility instead of learning for success!!

I wish people would explain things easier for complicated people like myself. I have seen the word principle used in so many ways I am left with more questions. Yea, do my thinking for me because I get in my own way. What I got from this video is if you have an idea? It should be based on what you already know to be true. If you don't know enough, then study and learn more. So base your thinking on reality and not the reality that Donald Trump wants you to believe.

what you fogot t o mention in your musk model is arranging all that aluminum and titanium in a way that would get to space and back better and cheaper. and that is years of testing by the brightest and most well educated and most expensive minds. ... first principles says " a house is made mostly of mortar and cement and that is mostly sand and bricks are mostly sand so take the weight of the house and divide by teh cost of sand and thats what a house should cost. its ABSURD on the face of it. and if musk hadnt been bailed out by nasa several times and continues to be bailed out by government money... he would be gone. the real skill is getting bbillions in guaranteed government contract without proof you can do it. why dont you do a video on how to do THAT
