@Wiley_Coyote4 жыл бұрын
Nobody else is Avi, or ever will be. But Matt gets pretty low, and he does one thing Avi couldn't... he and Scott can get close enough in tone that they can do the deeper equivalent of what Mitch and Kirstin do. I'm always surprised I never see anyone talking about this. The way Mitch and Kirstin can close harmonize is now duplicated, when needed, on the deep end by the other two. It's a new trick, because while Scott's always been able to go fairly deep, there never really was a strong effort to blend Avi and Scott, vs them having distinct parts. That's changed with Matt.
@mecfstraveler4 жыл бұрын
I was trying to comment on that Harmony but I don't think I worded it very well! I think it became really apparent to us as fans when we saw Matt and Scott singing Harmony on A Very Wicked Halloween special. They were singing Harmony for Mitch and Kirstin who were the leads in "What Is This Feeling?" And Sweater Weather! That was gorgeous I hear Scott come in to join that in that close harmony! And then Mitch joined and it was just the three of them sounding very beautiful very close together. We definitely knew that this was something different at that point
@fosixsix2254 жыл бұрын
Yeah like on “can you feel the love tonight?” I commented “only pentaholics can tell when It switched from kirstin to Mitch in the beginning” but then I felt really ashamed when someone pointed out to me that it switched from Scott to Matt in the very beginning. When singing they sound so different yet so alike. And on stay I had no idea it was Matt, I admit it sounded a little different with Scott but I thought it was him anyway because I had never heard Matt’s voice in a higher register
@Wiley_Coyote4 жыл бұрын
@@fosixsix225 right. So they did gain something with Matt that helped their overall sound. The cost was a few super duper Avi low notes that even Matt can't reach, but he reaches enough that it's not any kind of huge issue.
@olabergvall31544 жыл бұрын
@@Wiley_Coyote And, lest we forget; Avi is making his own music now for us to enjoy. So we didn't lose Avi, we just gained a fantastic solo performer, and a slightly revised Pentatonix. A win-win-win as I see it. And Matt looks happy in this setting. Cheers for Matt ❣
@mecfstraveler4 жыл бұрын
@@fosixsix225 they've gotten me a couple times 2! I'm used to having to REALLY listen to tell Mitch from Kirstie when they're singing close! I managed to tell them apart on the line they did sing on " Can You Feel the Love Tonight" because of Kirstie's vibrato.. but now they're doing it to us with Matt and Scott! On "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" was a really good example of the group messing with us on just how well we thought we knew their voices, just like you said! I remember we listened to the audio first and in comments we were all trying to figure out who sang what as a solo. Then we watched the video and we were like "OH! Snap!" They got most of us, so don't feel bad! "Stay" was tricky too! Another thing that Pentatonix changed on us (making it harder to tell who is singing at times) is Scott has not been doing as many riffs and runs. I think it was totally deliberate for him to change that up so we wouldn't know if it was him or Matt! When has Scott ever held back from a good riff or run? And another time I suspected it started with Matt, then switched to Scott was a solo in "Despecito". but I didn't have enough faith in my ear to say that in comments under the audio version of the song. it's the 1st 5 words in Scott's solo. I thought it was Matt. " 'and now I'm feeling like' girl you know I want your love, girl you were handmade for somebody like me"... I honestly thought it was Matt for those 1st 5 words because the notes were lower and then "Sound of Silence" came out... Scott starts that out with some notes that would have been low for him and really surprised us. I mean we knew he sang Bass during Avi's solos.. but.. not like THAT. Scott was doing other things differently in songs then he used to , one of them was him holding back some on his signature riffs and runs. and now we see him on The Sound of Silence hitting some very low notes in the beginning? and of course there's "Come Along", with Scott shocking us with his lower register in the beginning of the number. So I doubted my feeling that it was Matt singing that first part of Scott's solo on "Despacito" because obviously Scott was singing that low now so why would they have one person sing the first five words of somebody else's solo? I convinced myself that it was all Scott with no lead-in by Matt... and I quit trying to figure it out. Then, just recently, I saw somebody's recording of the song in concert, and It WAS Matt! I was so shooketh! I was just sitting here staring at the now paused recording with my jaw hanging open and then started telling the empty room "Matt DOES sing that part! I was right! It IS Matt"... I think they're having fun with surprising us because Pentatonix likes to keep us guessing and it's does keep us on our toes! Those two are so close in their sound, especially when Scott does not do any riffs or runs. It is so awesome having these surprises popping up again

PTX was on the Sing-Off was 2011. Avi announced he was leaving the group in May 2017, though he stayed through their summer tour which ended in September. PTX invited Matt to sing/tour with them for the 2017 Holiday season, (trial period) and Matt became an official member of the group in early 2018. This song was on the album they released in Spring 2018. So yes, they have noticeably aged from teenagers/college kids to adults. 🙂 A lot of people were prepared to dislike Matt because he wasn’t Avi, but he’s won most people over. Both talent-wise and personality-wise.

I think this was one of the first videos they released with Matt, and it was a great introduction for him. He killed it in this! Not only are they all older than in most of the videos you've reacted to so far, but as is their wont, Mitch and Kirstin are always changing up their look. They've always been great at blending for the background harmonies, but with their voices maturing a little, and both gaining so much more self confidence since the early days, they're definitely taking those harmonies to new levels. These mashups have become one of their signature styles, and they just keep getting better with the arrangements and harmonies. My all time favorite of their mashups is Despacito x Shape of You (from the same "Top Pop" album as this one). Unfortunately, there's not a video for it, but I could listen to it on repeat for hours, it's so good! You might want to react to it audio only, or if you could find a good live concert performance of it that would be great.

It's harder when Matt is covering a song that were used to hearing Avi singing on. Avi has more of a classical training, and I don't know what the range is now compared to when Matt first joined but Avi was able to sing lower than Matt with a richer sound initially. But the Rhythm Bass? I love Matt's Style. There is a difference between the two but remember Avi handpicked Matt and recommended him to replace him and Matt didn't try out he said no I'm not good enough. He was tricked into auditioning by the group, Ben Bram and by his manager. So he is a very humble person and he's very young. He's got a really good energy and he fits in really well with all of them and he's like a big puppy dog with all of that energy and happiness. Everybody's recommending really good songs right now so I will just let them take it away! And yeah you're looking at Mitch with the mustache. We've lost the mustache a long time ago! LOL now I have to go back and find where I missed your last reaction on The Sing-Off ... my feed is just so messed up on KZbin! Love your reaction! Oh what about "Sweater Weather"? Or "Making Christmas"! Sweater Weather shows us a new lovey three part harmony with Matt, Scott then Mitch.. which is something new. Also Scott has worked on strengthening his low and so he takes bass when Matt is singing lead very well now! And Scott has the bass line throughout all of "You're a Mean One Mr. Grinch".. 😁 Kirstin has grown so much as a vocalist it's unbelievable! She did a couple of stints on Broadway in Kinky Boots and it really boosted her skill and confidence level! Scott has always been awesome and he's continued to improve and Mitch has just become more and more in control of every part of his range. Matt said that Mitch can't be human because he sounds the same every single time. Catch you on the next one!

I think a lot of people overlook or don't notice Kirstin's improvement but IMO she's gone from being the only one I could've pointed at as a weak link to being a much stronger singer and undoubtedly equal in skill to most of the others.

@@DarthRayj I agree. She was really insecure though for quite a few years. It was after Avi left, then something happened with her and Jeremy. She moved to New York and did Broadway but the wedding never happened. And then she just really came alive! New York is a place that she thrives! It was so clear that she'd had voice lessons and corrected the problem she was having with the nerve damage from the cleft palate surgery that was making her do the side mouth. We realize now that was why she would j u t her lower jaw forward. She was trying to get more volume and that's the wrong technique. But I'm really glad that she took the bull by the horns and corrected errors plus had those lip implants put in to force her mouth to not go the wrong direction. I noticed that it looks like she's taking them out like she said could be done and her voice is just as strong as it was when she had been in and was working on correcting bad habits. I am so proud of her for getting over her insecurities and becoming such an amazing singer and young woman just like we all knew she was already! She just didn't realize it yet. She used to hate getting solos and I used to hold my breath hoping she didn't go off key and now she's just a warrior! I wish I could give her a great big hug and tell her how proud I am of her!

2:47 ... stares into the camera, rubs head..."Let me just take a minute..." - PRICELESS!!! Always love getting the notification from your channel. Great reaction video. Thank you. PS: I listen more closely to all music videos now because of what your teaching pauses have, well, taught me. Thanks, again :)

I can't wait to see your reaction to a lot of their original songs plus their newer covers and arrangements.

I've been waiting on this one! its just starting now ... edit: another great reaction! I think they couldn't have done this kind of music with Avi as well as they do with Matt just because its not his style at all. Matt has opened up a whole new world of things they can do and i am enjoying it. I loved avi and still do but i also love Matt and i think he even does a great job on the older stuff but he puts his own spin on it when they sing those older songs in concerts etc. i think they have all grown a lot since avi left which was 2017 btw and this perf i believe was in 2018 and the sing off was 2011! many things have changed but overall its only gotten better in my opinion!

Oh my God, this was such a great reaction. I laughed so hard when I realized that you've been doing their Sing Off performances lately and then to pretty much jump straight into this... :D You absolutely need to hear The Sound of Silence. It's the Hallelujah of Matt era and it really enhances a few things they do now more than they used to. And it also gives you a fuller picture of what Matt sounds like. Saying that Kirstie is georgeous is stating a fact, so it's absolutely alright. Mitch has a different look every ten minutes, so you're also gonna see another interesting hairstyle that he kept until very recently :). Also, I fell in love with met when I saw Havana. He's a ray of sunshine and it shows in that video, so I also recommend that one. But really, you can't go wrong with their newer stuff, just like you can't go wrong with their old stuff :).

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE listen “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch”. It features Matt as a soloist basically the whole song and it is AMAZING. You can really hear him and his tone.

I couldn't click fast enough! I am an Avi fan and was bummed (but understood why) he had to go on his own. Matt has really done a great job on Bass. Because what you said about Kirsti & Mitch ( 4:41 ) how they sound like 1 person harmonizing with themselves...you need to check out the video of Avi overtone singing. There are a few of them out there but you won't be disappointed. I suggest this live performance: just search "Scott Introduces Avi, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Singapore, Mastercard Theatre" Thanks for the great reactions!! Love 'em

That 3-note sound you were hearing (and said you aren't sure how he was making that sound) is a Bell Chord. It's actually Kirstin, Mitch, then Scott. you quite obviously understand the idea of a chord and harmony but instead of singing it in unison, they sang the notes in the chord in Rapid succession. Kirstin started with the highest note and each sang their note one after the other and held it out until the last person has sung their note. Since they held their individual note out we hear the full chord when the last note is added. That's why it's a bell chord. it's like hitting three Bells in Rapid succession. Bells have a resonance that holds in the air after being struck. The person playing the Bells can stop the resonance by touching Bell or they can allow it to continue and add more notes on top of it to make a really beautiful chord with pauses in between each note. That's what Kirstie Mitch and Scott did and it is gorgeous! We were really impressed with how much they'd improved as well especially on those harmonies! It had been a hot minute since they released an entire album with Matt since Avi left and it was unbelievable how much Kirstin and Mitch had improved upon but we had already thought was perfection. And it was really cool to hear them doing a song that had some hip-hop beats to it!

You've only seen them when the three younger ones were still just kids. They're all grown up now, experienced and self-confident in their skill and fame. Mitch was a little shy in the beginning and the others kind of sheltered him just a bit, but he's a sassy gown man now and knows what he wants. He loves his fashion fits and flights and sometimes puts on things we think are off the wall, but hey, that's him and we love him. Tight and on-spot is what made them what they are. It's a talent they're not testing anymore, they're professionals.

Hi Kyle! Just wanted to say that I enjoy your reaction videos and I’m always happy to see when a new one gets posted. I am a huge PTX fan, but listening to your takes on the music, makes me see (hear) what I’ve missed. Thank you so much! Keep up the awesome job

I love that you acknowledged that Mitch and Kirstin sound so similar, like it's one person harmonizing with themselves. There's been the odd song where I had only heard the recording and hadn't yet watched the video, and I had a hard time telling which of them is singing which part because of how similar they sound, it's crazy! I also love that you waited to jump into the new stuff! I feel like it makes you appreciate it so much more knowing where they came from.

If you're gonna keep delving into their newer stuff now, I'd suggest their cover of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight." The harmonies are mind-blowing and everyone's range is tested. Some other newer songs I would suggest that feature Matt more prominently would be "Attention" and "The Sound of Silence," too.

Love that you're reacting so much to PTX! I like that you branched out from the type of music you normally listen to and found that you really like it. If you want to go even further to types of music you might not have heard may I suggest a Kazakh singer called Dimash Kudaibergen? He does sing in English but he does many other languages too and he injects such emotion into his songs that, to me, it doesn't really matter that I don't know the words. Some suggestions (should you decide to listen): SOS (Singer 2017 version), Sinful Passion, Opera 2, Autumn Strong, Daybreak... Anyway, keep on reacting! I like how genuine you are.

Matt is so great. Definitely stands on his own. I highly recommend You’re A Mean One Mr Grinch next. I known it’s not Christmas yet but it really shows his chops. I love Matt though, he had big shoes to fill and I think he’s killin it.

How could it EVER be 'inappropriate' to recognize the beauty that Kristy brings to these performances, particularly when coupled with that absolutely perfect voice? Call me 'foolish' about the unmatched perfection of the entire group!

I caught the description that it was your first reaction with Matt and didn't see what song it was (I'm subscribed and only saw the alert on my phone). I squeed (yes, that's a word according to me 😅) when I saw it was New Rules x Are You That Somebody, one of my faves! Loved how blown away you were and I'm super stoked for you to check out others like La La Latch, Sing, Havana, Shallow... So many good ones! Please check out the old ones still. I really enjoy your PTX reactions! Okay, Sing is with Avi but it's one of my favorite originals! Come Along is another good one with Matt to check out!

I believe they made this video around the time Kirstin was starring in Kinky Boots (in early 2018) on Broadway. That's why they're in a condo with an amazing view of Manhattan (NYC).

Anxiously awaiting you to get to Singoff Episode 12 when they do 'Dog days are over'. Everyone goes nuts. Also love Havana, although there is so much to love with all of their remixes. They have matured and advanced in their musicality over the years until they are unbelievable.

That part you were worried was effects was bell tones. One note sang separately in succession from each member of the the trio done in a very fast triplet. They do it a little slower the first time in the chorus and the second time its such a fast rhythm that it’s hard to tell what they’re doing. They’re so good at their rhythms that one person can come in and sing one note and another takes the next note and so on. It’s very noticeable in the Daft punk medley toward the end. Can’t remember if you’ve reacted to that. Another one with good bell tones between Kirstie and Kevin is Can’t Help Falling In Love. There’s so many good songs left to do.

So happy that you are enjoying ptx. I like to mix them up from old and new. Here are some recommendations: from the old: sing, run to you plus the other Christmas songs. From the new despacito x shape of you, come along, Havana. There are too many to write. Can’t wait to see more reactions and don’t worry about pausing, that’s why it’s called a reaction. I’d rather you pause then talk over it. Also if I didn’t want you to pause, I would go to the ptx channel and watch their videos. Take care

Mitch and Kirstie have gotten really good at matching each other’s tone. To the point where in one of the latest ones (I think it was Can you feel the love tonight) I didn’t even notice they’d switched solos it for a few seconds. Can’t wait for you to get into the newer stuff!
