Great video. I love the older planes and am very lucky to still have nearly all of my first planes with the exception of a GWS Mustang that I foolishly threw away as it had pretty bad hanger rash. I taught myself to fly on a Precedent Electrafly then built a Ben Buckle Taylorcraft that I fitted a 540 motor and MFA belt drive box so I could spin a larger prop. Then a Balsacraft Hurricane with a speed 600. Also had a VMAR Viper. All 35mhz, brushed motors and Nicads. I have a 21 year old Multiplex Pico Cub that I bought my son for his 10th birthday. Then lipos and brushless motors came out and that was a huge game changer. I missed out on glow fuel (apart from a coup!e of Cox control line planes we had in the early 70s) and my dads old EZ Sportsman 45 that has the dreaded K&B 45 engine. That plane dates to the early 80s too but thanks to that engine has only partially flown once and so rightfully earns the nickname "The Spruce Goose"...

Thanks for sharing a video of an old friend. I have a MK1 that was originally built in 1976. A friend gave it to me as a basket case. I have since completely restored it, flew it with a 80’s vintage KB40, ended up putting a late 70’s vintage Gen 1 Saito FA45 on it. The Gen 1 Saito was the first closed rocker 45 and it had a separate cylinder head, unlike most Saito’s with a jug. Love flying it, I’m a Kadet nut, having many of all types. Claude McCullough was a great designer and I’ve really enjoyed his designs. The Sig Kadet Mk1 is the OG of trainers. Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it.

Crashed it on 6th flight, rebuilt it 3-4 years later and flew it again many times. I replaced the engines carb with a Perry for much better run reliability. I built it with Dural main gear and reduced dihedral to 2 inches. Many years ago!!!! Thanks for the memories, AV8R

Ah yes, this was my second plane after the Goldberg Gentle Lady glider two channel that had an 049 on the front. Not sure if it was the MKI or MKII but I remember the wings folding up on me because I didn't know how to reinforce the mid section of the wings properly. So I didn't get much time on it at all. This one would probably be even more fun if the dihedral was taken out or reduced greatly. It sounds so much better with that four stroke on the front.

A very nice classic trainer Adam and expertly put through it's paces!! I was shocked at the amount of dihedral the plane has!! But of course originally it was designed for 3 channel!! How does it compare to a foam trainer? Do you think there is much difference? Apart from I should imagine a Balsa plane will last for much longer and fly better, great video and great filming 😀👍
@ModelAV8RChannel2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ian thank you my friend! They both fly great, but different. The foamys are much lighter at that size range so they slow down a bit better, but the nitros penetrate the wind better. You're right the Balsa planes stand up to hangar rash better, but a well looked after foam plane can last a very long time. Both are worth experiencing.

I also learned on a Sig Kadet MK1 in 1982 - which I still have! Original engine was an Enya .29, that I could not get to run reliably, eventually an HB 40 ran great - also Futaba 6FN Radio. I am getting it flying again for the 40 year anniversary. Question, what did you do to combat the terrible climbing under power? I used to put three popsicle sticks under the rear of the wing, and it still climbed (not as bad). Also, never saw anyone fly a Kadet inverted like yours, do you have factory dihedrial?
@ModelAV8RChannel2 жыл бұрын
Hi Fred. Great story! There are a lot of us that learned on Kadets. It was the best trainer of the time. You can stop the climbing with thrust angle adjustments or trim, but its hard to get it perfect. I just compensate with inputs mostly. It has the factory recommended dihedrail...I think the aileron upgrade helps in controlling the inverted flying. The extra power doesn't hurt as well...

Too many RC Pilots today are flying all these foam electric planes. They are too lazy to build from a kit like an off or from scratch. Today is like just flying a toy out of the box, very little skill is needed. I am pretty much stopped going to the Flying Field because I have nothing in common with these people flying all these toy airplanes. Cannot discuss anything technical, such as how to tune an engine, or any building tips. It's a whole different ball game and not for the better. I started building planes back in 1971. Back then there were no off she had to build from a box of Balsa with a blueprint. It would take more time but it was definitely worth it when you got finished with the build. You can take pride in your accomplishments and when you brought it to the field people were excited to see your build.

You make a lot of good points, and obviously have a lot of experience and knowledge. While I understand your sentiments and the frustration you express...they'll never learn anything if you don't share all that. I fly everything, Balsa, foam, composite, nitro, gas, electric. I see many foam pilots expressing interest in other types, but that is because I don't assume they won't. I walk right up and show it, then pass the transmitter around. They enjoy it all in my experience...but only if you show enthusiasm for it all and share what you fly. The newer folks are just flying whats popular and known now. They will never know what they are missing unless guys like you and me show them...so I do.
