Enjoying the content young buck. I feel like I need to caution you about trying to go from this to Pink Floyd or The Beach Boys Pet Sounds. I don't think that's what you're looking for bruh. I see how your mind was blown after experiencing Abbey Road and The White Album, and that made you want more of that, and you wanted to deconstruct that and go back to the beginning. That's how come Led Zeppelin hit you so hard. Pink Floyd ain't it for you, I'm just telling you. Even the hits and the earworms are depressing, and the songs in between all run like 8-15 minutes long. And if you go to the beginning, you're dealing with practically a whole different band with Syd Barrett. Trust me, it will leave you sad, confused, and frustrated. And for the love of God, don't make Pet Sounds your first Beach Boys album. If ever there's a time to start from the beginning with a band, it's with them. It might actually help you out to check out some earlier "Surf music" hits to get a better understanding, like Jan and Dean, and Dick Dale. The Beach Boys were definitely the mac daddy's of the genre, but it was a thing before they were, they just had Brian MF'ing Wilson! You know what I think you should do next is Jimi Hendrix, unless you've already listened to all his work. I'm sure there's an album though that you haven't listened to all the way through, like Axis Bold as Love, or Electric Ladyland. But if you didn't want that hard edge that I think you do, and you want to continue to deconstruct The Beatles, maybe you check out Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and The Supremes. And right before they Released Help!, The Beatles met Bob Dylan, who introduced them to cannabis, and they were so floored with his lyrical ability, it completely changed their entire way of writing music. So checking out Dylan might be a good idea also, but I have to caution you again, because he ain't hard like Zeppelin, but he was an enormous influence on both the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix especially, as well as practically every other musician on the planet. And between those three especially you get a sense of where 60's rock was heading. I'm not lying when I say I'm enjoying your trip you're on here man because I got so much advice I'd love to give based on what I've seen. For one, there's a Doors movie from the 90's, and I really think seeing it before you deep dive into The Doors would make the experience make so much more sense for you, dude. 🤜💥🤛

Then he discovered LSD and he checked out for a little bit, writing Lewis Carroll nonsensical lyrics for a little bit, writing introspective tunes, and then finally meeting Yoko who allowed him to be himself for a change-and in his first two solo albums, he poured out his inner feelings. It wasn’t until Double Fantasy when he finally became comfortable with his own music and found his stride again. Really sad to see his life cut down at that point. Tragic.

Ok I’m just going to put it out there and I hope someone can talk me out of this. I am a huge Beach Boys fan. HUGE. But there’s no doubt about it - while Pet Sounds is a perfect album (except maybe ‘Sloop John B’) - a lot of their albums are so spotty that I’m not sure that you’ll have the patience for them. So many are just collections of songs while, especially as you go along, Beatles albums are conceived as albums if you know what I mean. Even though I personally think Smile might be the greatest 60s album period (yes yes I know it didn’t get released until the 00s) it may be a little too weird for you. Or maybe I’m full of sh-t and you’ll love it. So the problem is I am damn near certain there are plenty of Beach Boys songs as good if not better than Beatles songs, their quality control is nowhere near as great. On so many of their albums they throw the diamonds and the bullsh-t in together. Also when to stop. There’s just no sense really in listening to anything they did after ‘Beach Boys Love You’. I want you to hear and love The Beach Boys as much as I do but let’s just say the logistics are problematic. Pink Floyd ? Seriously ? Someone out there wants to see you sit through ‘Ummagumma’ or ‘Atom Heart Mother’ or - god help us - The Final Cut ?? Once again, I love the band. No one needs to sell me on them. I even like two of the three albums I just named but it took years of listening and repetition. I just don’t think they’re reaction video material. A person needs to build their own personal relationship with Pink Floyd - kinda like God I guess - and as a public display, I really don’t think it’ll work. Prove me wrong on both points Darius and I will be happy. To me it seems like a no brainer. The other side of the Beatles coin is the Stones and that’s that. Maybe you already know the Stones or you don’t like them - which I consider crazy but it’s your constitutional right - but they’re the only band that rivals the Beatles in terms of fame and relevance. When I was a kid growing up, the whole world was divided into Beatles or Stones people. Everyone else was second place. I was a Stones person. They were meaner and uglier which is not to say they didn’t record some beautiful songs. The Beatles were the good boys and the Stones were the bad boys. I know the world has wiped its mouth since then but that’s how it was back in the ancient days. Maybe not. I don’t want to see you do a band which doesn’t connect with you. Maybe they won’t but it just seems obvious to me.

@@teddydog6229 Right there with you. Don't need full discographies for every band. Hit the classic albums, take the top recommendation or two, and move on if you had your fill. When The Beatles first appeared on The Ed Sullivan show, February 9, 1964 -- their first national exposure in the US -- Ringo Starr & John Lennon were 23, Paul McCartney, 21, & George Harrison, 20 (2 weeks shy of 21). That's how VERY young they really were!!! They disbanded in 1970, before any of them had turned 30, and all went on to have successful solo careers. But in their few years together, they created a musical catalogue worthy of their title as GOAT among all the other GOATs you could name.

"You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" is actually inspired by their manager Brian Epstein, and his struggles as a gay man in post-war Britain. John was essentially singing a tribute to Brian, acknowledging that he truly SEES him and how hard it must be to keep your love life a secret. They were very close. According to some historians... VERY close, if you catch my drift. But who cares what's true or not about that - writing this song was a very compassionate act for a friend.

If you want an album you might be able to relate to as a young guy, react to the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album. The Beatles were also huge fans of that album. It's easy to dismiss the Beach Boys because they were all about surfing and cars in the beginning and their lows could be low, but their harmonies are sublime and their music is much more complex than it seems at first. Also, they got past the surfing after 1964 and wrote more about love and...depression, in some cases.

Hey Darius, love your reactions and your analysis. One thing I want to point out is that only Paul and Ringo were Knighted by Queen Elizabeth, which "allows" them to use the word Sir in front of their names. Ringo prefers not to be addressed as Sir. John and George were never knighted. All four Beatles were appointed as Members of the British Empire in 1965. John Lennon famously returned his MBE in 1969, in protest of Britain's foreign policies. Had John not been murdered, it would have been interesting to see if Queen Elizabeth would have offered Lennon a Knighthood, given his previous renouncement of his MBE, and whether Lennon would have accepted it, had a Knighthood been offered.

Ticket to Ride is more appropriately titled "Ticket to Ryde". Ryde is a seaside town in England and a popular summer destination. His girl is going away to Ryde for the summer. Paul said: "My cousin Betty and her husband Mike Robbins were very influential on me. I would say to John on this occasion, lets hitch hike somewhere. He would play along so we ended up going down to the Isle of Wight, Ryde where they had a pub. They were always running pubs so they moved around Reading and various other places. So we wrote Ticket to Ride there with the play on words. Ryde was spelt R-Y-D-E and we spelt it ride.”

I agree exactly on Beatles for sale. You do really good critical analysis. Did you get trained in journalism? On the covers, The Beatles manager and producer forced them to do some covers. It was unthinkable that any rock and roll act would do a 100% original album. I don't know if it ever happened before that. To The Beatles crash it they eventually refused and would no longer go along. By all accounts, The Beatles by the time they return from Germany and went back to Liverpool he was kind of like the Robert Johnson story from the blues in the 1920s that still is legend today. They left as nothing's with little respect and stayed in Hamburg Germany where they might as well have disappeared and returned insanely talented. They were playing professionally 10 hours every day for 7 days a week for months. It was what lots bands had to do, and the nightclubs all gave him speed to get through it. These guys all lived in a brothel while they were there the whole time. When the Beatles started playing in the clubs when they returned, all hell started breaking loose. They were like what you would call punk rock when there was no punk rock. Leather, tough haircuts that were very unusual because hamburg was a rocking city with wild hairstyles, and they put on a hell of a show. John Lennon used to wear a toilet seat around his neck when he played sometimes. Gags like that. And just wildness. It became the very place you had to go if you were in Liverpool. There was no other place to go but go there if you could squeeze in. The place must been a total file trap every time they played. And that's how they got discovered. Track 14 is a little Richard song, if I remember. They were crazy for Little Richard, Chet Atkins, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis. Act Naturally I believe is a Chet Atkins song. It's definitely not a Beatles song.

Forgot to mention with Baby's in Black. John called it their waltzing song and if you watch it live at one of their concerts in the U.S., you can see them waltzing. as a joke. A Hard day''s Night movie is considered a classic but Help is a lot of silly fun and it's in color. Rubber Soul and Revolver is certainly going to be a new phase, but I love each phase of the Beatles musical progression: early for the sheer joy of youth and introducing a new sound to the world; middle, for their maturing, folky and highly experimental sounds and firsts; their last period: for their beautiful lyrics and sophisticated musicianship.

The Beatles just started regularly experimenting with drugs during the recording of this album. You'll hear it in their next few albums...

In point of fact, before the album was finished, John and George had their first LSD experience -- the infamous "Dental Experience" as George would call it in Anthology.

The Beatles regularly used amphetamines and alcohol in the first part of their career. This was just their first time experimenting with GOOD drugs lol

The working title for Yesterday😅 was Scrambled Eggs.

Lol poor Beatles For Sale. Every time the Beatles released an album, one of my older brothers would bring it home. At the time, I was building Aurora monster models in my little room in the basement and working with glue and paint and listening to it over and over until the glue and the paint and the album and the Wolfman melted into my DNA. I love that odd thing.

Once you finish all of the Beatles albums, it would be so cool for you to get into their solo works. George's debut solo album "All Things Must Pass" is considered to be one of the best solo Beatles albums ever.

They are the early 60’s “mop tops “ and the late 60’s-early 70’s “Voices Of A Generation.”

The first album the Beatles wrote while smokin that smoke. And you can tell in a lot of songs.

Ringo had a song on each album because he was the most popular Beatle in USA with the most fan mail

Your song assessments are pretty good. Yesterday is the most covered song (by other artists) in history (about 2000 times). Regarded as probably Paul's greatest song. Dizzy miss Lizzy, like twist and shout, was a cover.

9:43 "re: hide your love away". John was told by Beatle management to pretend he was "not married" and to hide Cynthia from the audience. This is what he's talking about. They wanted to present the 4 Beatles as available for the female audience. But as is John's nature, he spits truth.

Dizzy Miss Lizzy is a Larry Williams cover (1958).

Just check out that one bit on 'You Like Me Too Much' where George sings (I think) "And it's nice when you believe me" and then John and Paul kick in with "If youu leeeave meee" and George comes back with "I will follow you and bring you back where you belong...". I'm not a musician so I don't know if that's called a transition or seagueway or what but I freaking LOVE that part ! Right up there with John's "I nearly died !" in No Reply. Just another all time peak Beatle moment for me. Benton Harbor Darius ? Small world sir. My best friend lived with his now ex-wife in that town right across from you. The lily white one ? This happened before you were born but a black kid - about 14 - got murdered over there in Whitesville (sorry I can't remember the towns name) and the people in Benton Harbor were furious because the sheriff over there did just about the worst investigation ever, short of never leaving his office. Of course his inlaws said you all in Benton Harbor were making a mountain out of a molehill - if a dead child is ever a molehill - and I think he said Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson showed up and it was a big deal nationally. I never forgot the name Benton Harbor after that. Do you know the case or if anyone was ever finally arrested for it ? And then most likely aquitted ? It's good to put a real face to Benton Harbor and also have it be one of my favorite KZbin channels.

Time to check out Past Masters Vol 1 and catch up with all of the singles and other non-album tracks up to this point in their career.

The early Beatles were singing to the young girls that filled up the seats at those stadiums. Later they sang for themselves. You are a brilliant psychologist.

For a broader perspective on the Beach Boys the biopic Love and Mercy is the best. Probably the best music biopic of all time

In regards to Beatles For Sale, I think it's worth mentioning about the cover tracks. Firstly, the first two Beatles albums had covers, which was fine because they were considered two growth albums in our minds, but then they released A Hard Day's Night with no covers! It makes you feel like you've graduated! But then, for contractual reasons, they had to throw out another album with half covers. That's one reason Beatles For Sale can feel like a let down. Follow me here on another defense: Only 8 of the 14 tracks are Beatles songs, so let's throw out these others as just extra fluff, which may be good or bad, but doesn't count as to our overall impression of where the Beatles were at. Now, No Reply is one of my all-time favorite Lennon songs, right up there with Help or In My Life, for me. I'm A Loser is also another amazing Lennon song. Baby's In Black is fun, but a homage track for them. I'll Follow The Sun is a wonderful diddy (not diddly, as my boy Darius often says). Eight Days A Week is an absolute hit that can't be discounted. And then I find myself coming back to Every Little Thing, Spoil The Party, and What You're Doing a lot. Darius, don't write em off! What You're Doing already has that late 60's song that many bands would copy.
