Enjoying the content young buck. I feel like I need to caution you about trying to go from this to Pink Floyd or The Beach Boys Pet Sounds. I don't think that's what you're looking for bruh. I see how your mind was blown after experiencing Abbey Road and The White Album, and that made you want more of that, and you wanted to deconstruct that and go back to the beginning. That's how come Led Zeppelin hit you so hard. Pink Floyd ain't it for you, I'm just telling you. Even the hits and the earworms are depressing, and the songs in between all run like 8-15 minutes long. And if you go to the beginning, you're dealing with practically a whole different band with Syd Barrett. Trust me, it will leave you sad, confused, and frustrated. And for the love of God, don't make Pet Sounds your first Beach Boys album. If ever there's a time to start from the beginning with a band, it's with them. It might actually help you out to check out some earlier "Surf music" hits to get a better understanding, like Jan and Dean, and Dick Dale. The Beach Boys were definitely the mac daddy's of the genre, but it was a thing before they were, they just had Brian MF'ing Wilson! You know what I think you should do next is Jimi Hendrix, unless you've already listened to all his work. I'm sure there's an album though that you haven't listened to all the way through, like Axis Bold as Love, or Electric Ladyland. But if you didn't want that hard edge that I think you do, and you want to continue to deconstruct The Beatles, maybe you check out Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and The Supremes. And right before they Released Help!, The Beatles met Bob Dylan, who introduced them to cannabis, and they were so floored with his lyrical ability, it completely changed their entire way of writing music. So checking out Dylan might be a good idea also, but I have to caution you again, because he ain't hard like Zeppelin, but he was an enormous influence on both the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix especially, as well as practically every other musician on the planet. And between those three especially you get a sense of where 60's rock was heading. I'm not lying when I say I'm enjoying your trip you're on here man because I got so much advice I'd love to give based on what I've seen. For one, there's a Doors movie from the 90's, and I really think seeing it before you deep dive into The Doors would make the experience make so much more sense for you, dude. 🤜💥🤛

"Yesterday" was probably the first Beatles song that got a lot of the adult population to realize how great the Beatles were, and that they weren't a flash in the pan teeny bopper craze the adults thought they were ... it was a monster hit, and you couldn't go anywhere without hearing it.. and it appealed to all generations... apparently it is the most covered song of all time

Then he discovered LSD and he checked out for a little bit, writing Lewis Carroll nonsensical lyrics for a little bit, writing introspective tunes, and then finally meeting Yoko who allowed him to be himself for a change-and in his first two solo albums, he poured out his inner feelings. It wasn’t until Double Fantasy when he finally became comfortable with his own music and found his stride again. Really sad to see his life cut down at that point. Tragic.

One of the things i appreciate, you recognise how young The Beatles were when they recorded this. There are lots of 20-somethings who've written great songs since, but in terms of what went before, they weren't starting from scratch. For me, the title track is still my favourite Beatles track. Hey Darius, love your reactions and your analysis. One thing I want to point out is that only Paul and Ringo were Knighted by Queen Elizabeth, which "allows" them to use the word Sir in front of their names. Ringo prefers not to be addressed as Sir. John and George were never knighted. All four Beatles were appointed as Members of the British Empire in 1965. John Lennon famously returned his MBE in 1969, in protest of Britain's foreign policies. Had John not been murdered, it would have been interesting to see if Queen Elizabeth would have offered Lennon a Knighthood, given his previous renouncement of his MBE, and whether Lennon would have accepted it, had a Knighthood been offered.

When The Beatles first appeared on The Ed Sullivan show, February 9, 1964 -- their first national exposure in the US -- Ringo Starr & John Lennon were 23, Paul McCartney, 21, & George Harrison, 20 (2 weeks shy of 21). That's how VERY young they really were!!! They disbanded in 1970, before any of them had turned 30, and all went on to have successful solo careers. But in their few years together, they created a musical catalogue worthy of their title as GOAT among all the other GOATs you could name.

If you want an album you might be able to relate to as a young guy, react to the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album. The Beatles were also huge fans of that album. It's easy to dismiss the Beach Boys because they were all about surfing and cars in the beginning and their lows could be low, but their harmonies are sublime and their music is much more complex than it seems at first. Also, they got past the surfing after 1964 and wrote more about love and...depression, in some cases.

The tune for Yesterday came to Paul in a dream. He woke up and spent a couple of weeks asking everyone he knew what song it was, and nobody had ever heard of it. In regards to Beatles For Sale, I think it's worth mentioning about the cover tracks. Firstly, the first two Beatles albums had covers, which was fine because they were considered two growth albums in our minds, but then they released A Hard Day's Night with no covers! It makes you feel like you've graduated! But then, for contractual reasons, they had to throw out another album with half covers. That's one reason Beatles For Sale can feel like a let down. Follow me here on another defense: Only 8 of the 14 tracks are Beatles songs, so let's throw out these others as just extra fluff, which may be good or bad, but doesn't count as to our overall impression of where the Beatles were at. Now, No Reply is one of my all-time favorite Lennon songs, right up there with Help or In My Life, for me. I'm A Loser is also another amazing Lennon song. Baby's In Black is fun, but a homage track for them. I'll Follow The Sun is a wonderful diddy (not diddly, as my boy Darius often says). Eight Days A Week is an absolute hit that can't be discounted. And then I find myself coming back to Every Little Thing, Spoil The Party, and What You're Doing a lot. Darius, don't write em off! What You're Doing already has that late 60's song that many bands would copy.

"You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" is actually inspired by their manager Brian Epstein, and his struggles as a gay man in post-war Britain. John was essentially singing a tribute to Brian, acknowledging that he truly SEES him and how hard it must be to keep your love life a secret. They were very close. According to some historians... VERY close, if you catch my drift. But who cares what's true or not about that - writing this song was a very compassionate act for a friend.

I agree exactly on Beatles for sale. You do really good critical analysis. Did you get trained in journalism? On the covers, The Beatles manager and producer forced them to do some covers. It was unthinkable that any rock and roll act would do a 100% original album. I don't know if it ever happened before that. To The Beatles crash it they eventually refused and would no longer go along. By all accounts, The Beatles by the time they return from Germany and went back to Liverpool he was kind of like the Robert Johnson story from the blues in the 1920s that still is legend today. They left as nothing's with little respect and stayed in Hamburg Germany where they might as well have disappeared and returned insanely talented. They were playing professionally 10 hours every day for 7 days a week for months. It was what lots bands had to do, and the nightclubs all gave him speed to get through it. These guys all lived in a brothel while they were there the whole time. When the Beatles started playing in the clubs when they returned, all hell started breaking loose. They were like what you would call punk rock when there was no punk rock. Leather, tough haircuts that were very unusual because hamburg was a rocking city with wild hairstyles, and they put on a hell of a show. John Lennon used to wear a toilet seat around his neck when he played sometimes. Gags like that. And just wildness. It became the very place you had to go if you were in Liverpool. There was no other place to go but go there if you could squeeze in. The place must been a total file trap every time they played. And that's how they got discovered. Track 14 is a little Richard song, if I remember. They were crazy for Little Richard, Chet Atkins, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Jerry Lee Lewis. Act Naturally I believe is a Chet Atkins song. It's definitely not a Beatles song.

i've always interpreted "you've got to hide your love away" as john being desperately in love with someone who doesn't reciprocate his feelings and his inability to let it go, even though everyone in his life wants him to. that song has really grown on me as i've gotten older. i'm so glad you ended up enjoying "act naturally." yes it's a cover, but it fits ringo so so well and he sounds great on it. another great reaction!

You are totally spot on about your take on Beatles For Sale. They were burned out from nonstop touring and recording. While BFS is much better than most 1964 albums on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.....it remains substandard in the Fabs' overall catalog. That's not a knock on BFS as much as it is a compliment to the other records. The Help! album is the start of the new Beatles era. The group, who according to Lennon, was "smoking marijuana for breakfast" at this time, was branching out. On many levels. Aside from Ringo's OK-but-nothing-special Act Naturally and John's meh It's Only Love.....there are no weak spots. And how it closes with Paul's Yesterday into John's whoop-it-up cover of Dizzy Miss Lizzie is interesting. Help is the bridge the Beatles needed to get to their first majestic era. Great video once again! See you for Rubber Soul!

For me, every song pre rubber soul is early beatles, and every song afterwards is late beatles. Rubber soul itself is a bit of a mix, but for me it has no bad songs. It definitely grows on you aswell.

The clue is in the title Beatles for sale ! They were so tired with non stop making records and touring and having to forfill record company deals they had been signed to and having to scribble songs so quickly and fill up with covers and felt like a commodity. If look at the album cover you see how tired they look.

You should hear rubber soul and revolver on the same day to hear the difference in sound

Lol poor Beatles For Sale. Every time the Beatles released an album, one of my older brothers would bring it home. At the time, I was building Aurora monster models in my little room in the basement and working with glue and paint and listening to it over and over until the glue and the paint and the album and the Wolfman melted into my DNA. I love that odd thing.

Youve Got To Hide Your Love Away was partially about how in the early days the Beatles were told to hide their girlfriends from the public, since lots of their fans were teenage girls the managers thought if people knew they had girlfriends it would affect sales, the track is mostly just John venting his frustrations with that

back in the day, we listened to the whole album, so if there was a weak track, a banger was coming next. The Beatles first TV appearance in the US was in Feb. '64, less than three months after the assassination of JFK. Three weeks before he was killed, he gave the go-ahead to the coup that ended in the death of the leader of South Vietnam, and the golden era that we boomers thought was ours at this time ended with the Tonkin Gulf Resolution in Aug. 1964, which was based on a big lie that LBJ used to get us into the Vietnam War, which tore the country apart. This was also the time of the Civil Rights struggle that led to the passage of laws that ended segregation.

9:43 "re: hide your love away". John was told by Beatle management to pretend he was "not married" and to hide Cynthia from the audience. This is what he's talking about. They wanted to present the 4 Beatles as available for the female audience. But as is John's nature, he spits truth.
