Love how you just smile in awe the whole way through! You’ve just witnessed one of the finest bands ever to form with arguably the best guitarist ever to walk the planet execute a song to perfection. Tight as a drum and note perfect, this could be one of the best live recordings ever. Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits, pure genius.

41 years later and its still one of the best live performances you'll see on You Tube, we're lucky they recorded it so well. It was July 1983, I was just turned 18 and I was there at Hammersmith! I loved the concert, it took a while for us to get in to it, but Sultans really kicked it off! We were on the balcony and the whole thing was jumping up and down! They are all incredible musicians and all on top of their game. We knew Mark was going to be spectacular, how do you play like that while jumping up and down? For me, the unexpected star was Terry Williams on the drums, you won't see better drumming. They say that his father was there for the first time, so he played harder, but he always played like that and so this is more of an urban myth. If the drummer suddenly speeded things up the whole concert would be timed all wrong. They played for about two hours, and you really want to see the encore, Telegraph Road, if you think this blew your mind....

Mark Knopfler (red coat) is actually left handed and learned to play right handed so he didn't look different from other guitar players. He also plucks the strings with the tips of his fingers. He doesn't use a pick. GOAT of guitar players!

Love this song! Dire Straits are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Walk Of Life", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.

@@stillmrdoge you may like to check out the award winning video that accompanied the release of Brothers in Arms and then the live version from the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute Concert held at Wembley Stadium in 1988 which Dire Straits headlined. The band's lead singer, guitarist and songwriter extraordinaire Mark Knopfler gave arguably his most emotional performance of the song that night in front of a worldwide audience of over 600 million people. Dire Straits were banned by the apartheid government in South Africa after they'd donated all the South African royalties from their debut album to Amnesty International. The concert helped to pile pressure on the government to finally release Mandela, which finally happened less than 2 years later.

In England many pubs have live music. This song written by Mark Knopfler (his brother David is the other guitarist) who is from Newcastle in the north of England, was in London. On a rainy evening he was in Deptford (south of the Thames in London) heard music coming from a pub and went in. The song is about the band that were playing - The Sultans of Swing. Like many pubs there is not always a big crowd to start with - you don't see too many faces! A bunch of mates in the corner are fans of rock and roll but not necessarily what the band are playing, with trumpets and a brass section. But like all such bands, they are mostly amateurs getting together to play for fun and hopefully get some payment as well. This song resonates with so many players who are excellent but never make it to the big time. They play they love it but..... Anyone who has been in such a band knows exactly what this song means. Long live live music with real people playing for the love of the music and death to autotune and computer degenerated rubbish.

The tempo Is faster because the drummer, Terry Williams, had his dad in the audience for the first time and he was Hyped, thus the faster pace. Mark and the rest were amused and they all just had to keep up with him. His drumming was just phenomenal. This was a killer performance. So is Telegraph Road, actually the whole concert was. ❤

Look at "Telegraph Road", awesome song, with "Alan Clark" one of the best pianists and Terry Williams on the drums, he was just always perfect. the whole band played so incredibly well together. Definitely also “Tunnel of Love” Live Wembley, which was also a great concert.

Fantastic reaction. You really can't miss with Mark, just a matter of how much of the good stuff he gives you and how it's phrased. There are so many different live versions of this song. Every tour whether Dire Straits or solo it gets recomposed a bit. Alchemy is a deserved name though, there was magic in these performances.

You mentioned in one of the comments below that Telegraph Road is coming. Here's the story behind it. Dire Straits was touring in Michigan and they were traveling by bus from one concert venue to another down the actual Telegraph Road (US Highway #24). It runs 70 miles north and south and runs along the western border of Detroit. Mark was asking the bus driver about why there was so much blight and decay along the highway. Lots of closed and boarded store fronts. Basically, the bus driver told him the story of Detroit. While this song was written about Detroit, it could easily be adapted to any large city that has fallen into hard times. If you like Sultans of Swing, you will definitely enjoy Telegraph Road.

Love Dire Straits, you know I really don't like live bands but I'll tell you what these are one of the few band I happen to like live, because I know when you're in the studio you can synthesize and you know do certain tones and knock everything down but when you see them live you kind of get disappointed this is not disappointing live is better, it's like the saying never meet your hero in person because you get disappointed, this is why few songs are better live, and this is one of the few of them, great song, 😁😁😁, this can bring you out of a bad mood, yes true it's a true story he got this from seeing a band in a little out of the way pub in London, the drum set up is crazy, i see why you live guitar solos, this is great, see your probably opening other people's minds about live bands also, this is awesome, go go go, this definitely put a smile on my face, wow the guitars are freaking me out, wow, hey did that almost sounds like "free bird" right near the end chorus or vice versa, 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼, definitely standing ovation on this, yes absolutely legendary, I'm just speechless thank you.

the music is ALWAYS better live than on recordings most times, the reactions of the audience makes the band want to make them PART of the music. which is the WHOLE POINT of music in the first place. to bring people together from all nations/ethnicitys/beliefs. What is more together than when the band are enjoying playing and the audience is part of the beat. if you want to see a GREAT example, see "Mettalica" live in Moscow "enter sandman" and watch what that audience reacts like. you will understand the relationship.

Yes, it is a real story ( at least in part) Mark Knopfler worked as a journalist in South London ( South of the river) One rainy night he was drawn to a pub where a band were playing. They weren't very good and at the end of the night ( Time Bell) Mark thought it was funny that these guys announced themselves as "The Sultans of Swing" I worked in Bermondsey and there are several pubs that claim to be where all this happened but having checked them out I still can't tell you which one ( Mind you Guinness fogs the thinking process a little)

The only similarity of this performance to the studio version is the name of the song.

Lose the hat. The sound is going to be seriously muffled with the phones having to work through all that cloth. That is kind of rude to the band.

Hey love your reaction and channel. Love this performance. I recommend the song called Calling Elvis from Dire Straits Live "On The Night" 1992. One of my favorite performances. Cheers from Australia 👍🎸🎸🎸
