In my not very humble opinion, this is one of the top five live rock performances ever recorded. I've been listening to this for decades, and it still give me chills. The power of the guitars balanced against Terry's drumming. Never any better, anywhere. My brother was a guitarist. He insisted to the day he passed that Mark was doing things in this performance that were not physically possible.
@jaycorby

otrame 1 Just caught your comment a year after you made it. I agree, this performance of Sultans of Swing ranks up there with Pink Floyd's Pulse concert of '94 and Gilmore's guitar solo during the masterpiece Comfortably Numb. Both of these I've been listening to for years, and I still get chills everytime. The feeling is very close to orgasm - I hope that isn't offensive, but it's the only way I can describe it. Your brother was right, Knopfler's guitar work in this instance bordered on the 'supernatural'.

Being an amazing guitarist. Mark Knopfler’s guitar skills are so underrated. That said, the sign of a great drummer is someone that can mesh with the guitarist as if it was one instrument. You are quite unique Twon. I'm an old white guy and was inflicted with life long Rock & Roll disease in my early teens, probably by Chuck Berry. This song, by itself, along with this live performance are right at the top of my all time favorites list. For many years I've also been torn by which performance did I enjoy more, Mark Knopfler on guitar or Terry Williams on drums. Both are fabulous!! In the end it's impossible to place Mark second. This is absolutely one of the greatest performances ever by one of the top guitarists ever. NOW though, when it comes to which you'd rather be, that depends on what you're looking for. Notoriety? Money? Side benefits? Still probably lead but drummers will get a lot of all. Also depends on other factors such as looks and personality. Example-Ringo Starr vs. Charlie Watts (Stones). Anyway, I loved your insights and appreciation of the performance. An aside....one of my best friends,, who I lived with for a year in 1968 and was best man at my wedding a few years later, is a black man who has a son in a nationally known Hip Hop band. While my pal and I lived together he added a love for Soul and R & B to my list of diseases. I'm still working on hip hop (new tricks for an old dog can be a problem)

I have been mesmerized by this song since it came out. I've been playing guitar for about 52 years, and this is the top of the top. Keep on with your true that reactions, Brother.
