You're not just going way back but to the first ever idol group created with the idol system we have today. SM was the one that created that system and H.O.T was the first to use it.

SM has actually existed since 1989 and it was called SM studio at that time, but in 1995 it became what is known today as SM Entertainment :) They created the first ever boy group H.O.T in 1996 and the first ever girl group S.E.S in 1997

If we're talking about groups who paved the way. H.O.T PAVED the way. They were the first ever Kpop "Idol" group. SM's founder actually surveyed high school kids to see what they wanted in a boy group then used that and his research of the western music scene to essentially create the ultimate boy group. And this formula used to create H.O.T pretty much became the "mold" used to create Idol groups today. Also, if you think about it, the way a Kpop group had to market themselves back then is very different from today. This all happened in the 90s, before internet was widely available. There wasn't youtube or any digital platform where you can watch, pause, or replay a performance. You have to tune in to TV at a certain time to watch them or wait until they do a concert near you. Groups had to capture the audiences attention literally in 3-4 minutes of a song and hope it sticks with you so you remember them until the next time they appear on screen. It's wild to think about how much Kpop and music consumption has changed over the years yet, we still talk about groups like H.O.T and their music is still covered by Kpop groups today, especially "Candy". Also the fact that is feels like eons ago when HOT and the first of Idol groups appeared but at the same time, it still feels recent (at least for me, someone born in the 90s), it was less than 20 years ago.

That's very true. They also sold massive amount of copies of albums at the time too. In fact, it took 25 years for We Hate All Kinds of Violence to be dethroned as the highest selling album from SM, thanks to NCT.

@@burningdex7171 Seo Taiji and Boys is definitely a precursor to modern Kpop but with both the way the group was literally titled Seo Taiji and the other two it was definitely different than the formula of Kpop that H.O.T pioneered

I'm so happy that I got to introduce you to H.O.T. - the OG of Idol groups. :) Short summary: H.O.T. (Korean: 에이치오티; pronounced "H. O. T.", acronym for Highfive Of Teenagers) is a South Korean boy band that was created by SM Entertainment in 1996. They are considered to be the first K-pop idol group and their successful formula became the model for many K-pop groups that followed them. The group consisted of five members: Moon Hee-joon, Jang Woo-hyuk, Tony An, Kangta, and Lee Jae-won. H.O.T. sold over 6.4 million records in South Korea during their career.They were also commercially successful in China and Japan, and were among the first stars of the Korean Wave in Asia. The group broke up in 2001 following a contract disagreement with SM Entertainment, prompting hundreds of fans to stage protests against the company. Only Kangta and Hee-joon stayed with SM. Hee-joon eventually left SM too around 2005. Their first single (1996) was, "Descendants of Warriors," is a critique of schoolyard bullying. Their second single "Candy," is a cheerful bubblegum pop song that established H.O.T.'s popularity, especially among teenage girls. "We Are the Future" came out 1997 Btw.: the thing at the end of the video of 'We are the Future' is the girl that jumped at the beginning of the video :)

I'm glad you mentioned the protests when they disbanded. We sometimes talk about how hardcore some K-Pop stans are but fans of H.O.T. were blocking roads and throwing rocks at SM when the disbandment was official LOL.

Oh god HOT... this brings me back to 2005 when I first started listening to kpop and soon after DBSK and Shinhwa went through HOT music as well.. 1st kpop idol group right there.. and it's amazing how like half of the members are still in the industry too. My favorite HOT song is I Yah - but I see that you don't have it planned on your watch list, so maybe some other time... or in your free time lol .. Candy is one of the most covered 1st gen songs out there - most recently I remember Pentagon covered it (with fitting wardrobe that was like... replica of HOT ones haha) - I don't think anyone did after them, but I might be wrong lol

They are not only the start of SM but actually the start of idols and kpop, I know about this group through kshows and i end up have so much respect for them also love their songs a lot, their messages were so controversial in Korea back then that parents would prevent their children from listening to them, they’ve known for always encouraging teenagers to be independent and have their own dreams also talked about their issues. their name is an acronym of (Highfive Of Teenagers)

If you ever get the chance, you may want to listen to/watch "Giving Tree" by Moon Hee Jun (he was the H.O.T. member with the super crazy hair and the best vocals). It is based on the Romeo and Juliet theme song ("A Time for Us"). It is truly epic.

Yeeeees, some classics here!!!!! I think almost all idols have covered Candy at some point in their carrer XD You also have to automatically do the chorus dance!!!!! At start they had to have that mysterious air and then they come out with Candy XD They made popular the ski googles as an accessory We are the future is my fav from H.O.T

in the We are the future, I think the thing that floating is the little angel, told them the students to stop destroy themselves due to the pressure they got in school, home or society ^^. H.O.T have so many great songs with great messages. They also o all kind of genres, hip hop, rock pop or cutie ones :D They also likes to mix their music with classical music and produced really beautiful music. Maybe you can check their other great songs like I Yah (talked about children rights that been ignored), Outside th Castle (talked about the disabled people), All Alone (about the poor student life at school), Wolf and Sheep (about the capitalsm), Get it Up (about children of war) etc. They also have ballad song that became OST of Endless Love (Autumn In My Heart) drama. Tittle song is Song For Lady. Love that song so much. Great drama too
