All songs on the EP Conventional Weapons including this song were released just before their breakup it's also been said that the lead singer wrote it for his daughter. So the meaning of this song is two-fold, the private meaning for his daughter which we do not know the details of. And the more public meaning to the fans which is pretty direct in my opinion, we must grow stronger, continue on with their message that they have given us when they fade/breakup/no longer with us. I think I cried when I first heard this, knowing that they may never reunite (they have, thankfully) but it's also just a really wonderfully emotional song. I recommend that you do a reaction to 'The World is Ugly' next since 'The light behind your eyes' and 'The world is ugly' are partner songs in Conventional Weapons.

‘Desert Song’ is fantastic. It has that same beautiful haunting vibe to it as this does, but a lot darker. I still think it was a brilliant move by the band putting it with the title screen for their documentary Life on the murder scene as someone which that doco was crucial in getting invested in and understanding the band.
