You are so right that I appreciate your love of PtX and their beautiful cover, but thank you so much for taking the time to insert this PSA. You are so right that animals don't deserve the outcome that so often occurs in that situation. Animals aren't gifts. They're family members for the duration of their lives. Thank you!

Happy International Day of Veterinary Medicine! This keeps popping up today so it must be the day! Thank you for all that you do to ensure animals are taken care of! This song is so festive! It's perfect for a brain break! There is a behind the scenes video that they put out, as well. That is where we learn that Kirstie was sick on the day of filming the video. That is why they went with Kirstie being the Christmas fairy making lovely things happen for the boys! They could film her separately when she felt better. I love everything about this video! The real sincerity for each other, Kirstie's amazing presence and the puppies! I absolutely LOVE your passion on the animal gift giving aspect of the video! I agree! As far as I know, Scott, Kirstie and Mitch are all animal lovers so I find comfort in knowing that. I do understand how this looks to someone seeing this and coming up with a gift idea that they may not have had before though. Sorry for this long winded comment, but if you make it this far, I wanted to make you aware that Scott Hoying released his own solo album which is fabulous! One song on it is quite sad and makes me cry every time. I'm sure your goal on these brain breaks is not to feel sadness but if you get the opportunity, Scott lost his dog Bubba to a very aggressive disease and he loved him with like a child. He wrote a song called Bubs that he put on his solo album. It totally encompasses the heartbreaking emotions with losing a beloved family member, human or not. I would wonder what your thoughts would be on that particular song as a animal lover and as a veterinarian. I know that I could totally relate to the song. Thank you for putting these wonderful, passionate videos out there to share with us! Take care and happy holidays!

Adoption can be a great way to bring in a new addition to the family!
@janhankins911
@janhankins911 6 ай бұрын
@@VetMedCorner Yes, it can! But be prepared! Most rescue groups (and some shelters) will be very choosy about the homes their dogs go to. When we took a dog into our rescue group, we were committed to that dog for his or her lifetime and if the adoption didn't work out, we took the dog back. We required an application, a home visit, and a vet reference (and thank you to all the vets who told us about how great the folks were and vets who also told us they they wouldn't adopt to the folks). We turned people down. We often didn't give people they dog they "wanted" (we had a family wanting to adopt a particular dog from us, but we said "no" to that particular dog--the family had two cats and this particular dog ate cats for breakfast and we wouldn't let them have that particular dog--they got a dog that would cuddle with the cats, not kill them). And, yes, there is an adoption fee. From a rescue perspective, not asking an adoption fee is financial suicide. We often took in dogs in need of thousands of dollars of veterinary care (dogs with heartworms, dogs that had been hit by cars and had broken bones, dogs with collars grown into their neck needing surgery to remove it, etc.). No, we didn't get free veterinary care (vets have bills to pay, too). Yes, most vets gave us a nice discount, but we still had sometimes thousands of dollars in vet bills to pay. Our fee was "standard" (everyone paid the same fee, regardless of how much that dog "cost us" in terms of care). Some dogs we spent very little on, others we spent thousands on. So don't gripe about the fee. And if you can't afford the fee, you probably can't afford the dog. We charged $350 for younger adult pure-bred Danes and Wolfhounds. If you can't afford that adoption fee, you can't afford to take your dog to the vet for even routine care--a vet charge of $350 for a giant breed dog is nothing.

Kirstie (and the guys, too) would be heartbroken to think she contributed to any potential stress for these puppies or any others out in the world. She’s a doggie mama through and through. I think it’s lovely that you made this a moment for education, though. As someone else noted, you can flip to the Yule log version of the video in the future so you can avoid the outdated notion that it’s proper to gift an animal to an unsuspecting recipient. And yes, try Pure Imagination x Christmastime is Here for something more soothing. I always love your reactions. Peace and happiness …

I agree, pets are a commitment for THEIR lives! Not gifts! And definitely NOT a surprise gift... unless the family understands that commitment. I've had cats (cat show siamese) since I was 4 til I was 12... 50+ years ago. My job was feeding, affection... and the parents made $$$ from my care of them. As i got older... whether it was a feline or canine... they ate better than me... they always came first! Still do. So in the behind the scenes the guys really love animals. Perhaps watching might make you feel better... Scott said to the pup... "I'd die for you..." I honestly don't think they had much time in the studio... But I whole heartedly agree... I just watched a European gent react to this song and he mentioned theres a saying over there "Pets are not for Christmas, they're fro life!" A slogan I'd like to see adopted here in the ignorant States.

I worked with a rescue group in the past. We made it a policy to never adopt a dog to a home at any holiday time without the knowledge/consent of all family members (so no surprise "gifts"). We did a home visit and required all family members that lived in the home to be present at the visit (so we could see how all family members interacted with the animal; if we didn't like what we saw, they didn't get the dog--one little boy got out his father's golf club and swing it at the dog--and the parents sat there like "isn't that cute?" The meeting went to hell in a handcart when I spoke up and told the kid that was not an appropriate thing to do to a dog, the parents said how dare I say that to their child, etc. Needless to say, the dog came back with me--no way was I leaving a dog there which angered this people even further, but oh well, I was much more concerned about the dog than I was about their feelings). We were pretty lucky as we didn't see a huge influx of unwanted dogs after Christmas, but I dealt with Great Danes and Irish Wolfhounds. When we started in rescue, I was surprised by how few Irish Wolfhounds entered rescue (except the 30-pound "Irish Wolfhound mixes" we kept getting calls about--you got a 30 pound "Irish Wolfhound mix", you don't have an Irish Wolfhound mix; maybe a 130 pound dog would qualify!) and how many Great Danes ended up in shelters and other less than ideal situations.

Not sure if it helps but on their behind the scenes video, they showed the owner (?)/ maybe animal rights folks (?) introducing each dog to the PTX member and watched them with the dogs before filming. Just didn’t want you to think they randomly put dogs in a box for the video. 🥺

Normally, I totally agree with you about do not giving live animals as pets. I do have to admit that the best birthday present I ever got was my little poodle mix girl. We lost our two dogs within 3 weeks of one another (both were quite elderly) and we were dogless. My husband surprised me with a puppy--best gift ever! But I agree with you--don't give animals as gifts and I'll not watch this video again.

Good for you for that important message. I had the same thought when I first saw the video. Shelters are overflowing with abandoned or surrendered pets and many are euthanised as a result. I'm a regular watcher of the Asher House videos which show the effects of stress and trauma on animals in shelters and how different they are once rescued and shown some love. The message is simple - Adopt don't shop. I'm also a Pentaholic to the core but the video made me cringe. It was a rare misstep.

It's disappointing when a song (or book, or movie) has something that makes you cringe and taints the entire experience. Sure they're all talented vocalists, but neither the song nor the video did anything for me, especially since the video has nothing to do with the lyrics and the puppies were completely unnecessary. It's unfortunate that the puppies were clearly stressed. When watching pet videos I always think of Mikel Delgado's (PhD. Cat Behavior Consultant) question of what benefit did the video have for the animal. Hopefully, all these puppies found great forever homes.
@VetMedCorner

I also struggled with the disconnect between the video and the lyrics... I really like Dr. Delgado - they are so wonderful and I like so much of their work with felines! That question is an excellent one, and I wish more people would keep it front of mind.
