Love your reaction. You are the first reactor to single out the word "amputate" and I agree with you. Ren admitted that this was a really difficult song for him to write because it took him back to the start of his illness in 2010, when he had told his mother he was not sure if he could keep on living. But he did. The first time I watched this I broke down in tears, happened each time for maybe 5 times. For me this is the most important piece of art for many many years

I wrote this introduction to Ren when I first discovered him earlier this year, as there wasn’t a Wikipedia entry for people to look him up prior to March 2023. I have posted this info to every “Hi Ren” reaction I have come across since, and I hope it will be of some use to the uninitiated. “Hi Ren” is the song that put Ren on everyone's radar since December; it went viral and has garnered over 8 million views since its debut, but he has been creating great music for more than ten years. Ren’s music videos are generally recorded live, often in a single take, although not necessarily the first take, and from various camera angles. His release, "Sick Boi," is almost another chapter to "Hi Ren." Many of Ren’s songs resonate with people because he addresses struggles that many others face every day. Ren plays multiple instruments (acoustic, electric, and bass guitar, piano, drums), has impressive vocals, is an excellent storyteller, and is quite the philosopher and poet. He is considered by many a modern bard; he calls his music “bardcore.” Ren’s earliest recordings on KZbin are from his time in a band called “Trick The Fox,” consisting of Ren and his buddies Charlie and Tommy. Unfortunately, the band performed only briefly due to Ren’s onset of health issues. They are very talented. A fun clip to watch is “The Mash Up.” Ren’s trilogy "The Tale of Jenny/Screech/Violet" has been likened to a Shakespearean tragedy and is a prime example of his genius; it is a master’s class in storytelling and also showcases his guitar skills. The three acts are haunting, and the conclusion will catch you off guard. The trilogy needs to be watched in the order given, as this is the flow of the storyline and is best watched as a whole rather than piecemeal. Ren’s collaborations with Chinchilla (“Chalk Outlines,” “How to Be Me,” “Sexual Healing,” “One Dance/Drunk in Love”) are beautiful and showcase his singing voice. His live music videos are especially impressive. Ren's personal reflections are threaded through many of his songs; "Insomnia," "Depression," “Diazepam," “Penitence,” “Dear God,” “Heretic,” “Dominos,” his "Freckled Angels" album, just to name a few, all deserve a listen. His song "Money Game" (Part I & II) is another recommendation, although it is less of a personal song than it is an indictment of greed and the resulting injustices in this world. Ren’s Hip Hop/Rap style songs are all worth checking out if you enjoy this genre; they are pretty amazing. Check out “The Hunger,” “Genesis,” “What You Want,” “Losing it (FISHER rap retake),” “Right here, right now (Fatboy Slim one shot retake),” "Life is Funny," “Love Music (Parts 1, 2, and 3),” “Crucify Your Culture,” “Power,” his latest release, “Bittersweet symphony (The Verve retake),” just to name a few. As I recently discovered, Ren also recorded a cover of “Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Cover),” that is simply beautiful. Then there are his performances with Sam Tompkins (“Blind Eyed,” “Earned it /Mans World / Falling,” “Walking on the moon/No Diggity”). Also, his collaborations with Eden Nash (“Humble,” “Ocean”), Bibi (“Crutch,” “Ahiahiaoha”), Molly McKinna (“Penitence”), Orlean ("Jessica"), his former bandmate Romain Axisa (“French Song”), are all great. "The Big Push" (Ren Gill, Gorran Kendall, Romain Axisa, and Glen Chambers) busking sessions, concerts, and live recordings all are awesome and well worth checking out. All but the drummer sing lead vocals at times. Their covers of "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop," "Wade in the Water/Nina Simone/Trouble so Hard," “War Pigs,” "My Generation," "An Englishman in New York," “Bongo Bong,” “These Boots Are Made For Walking,” the songs "Oh My Woman," “Swan Song,” “Sweet Little Lady," "It's Alright," "Watch Out," “Dignity,” and so many others are equally impressive. The band performed their last official busking session and gave their last concert in September of last year due to the fact that Ren was leaving for Canada to undergo medical treatment for his multiple health issues, including surgeries. In anticipation of his stay in Canada, Ren prepared some music ahead of time to be released over the next six months that he expects to be gone. He released “Sick Boi” and “Bittersweet Symphony (The Verve retake),” which is another masterful work. Ren has hinted that he might release his newest song on March 29, which is his birthday.

I was also blown away by this video the first time I watched it, not only because it's a brilliant piece of performance art, but also because it really hit close to home. It felt like he was describing my fight with self-doubt and depression when I was young which caused me to give up my dream of being a full-time professional musician and instead pursue a "safe" career....which I have regretted ever since.

Ren found the hospital chair on his Hunger video. The Pig mask he found in a junk store and represents greed from governments, music industry and pig pharma companies lying to us. No song disappoints and as an independent artist he's so talented. Samuel Perry-Falvey filmed this masterpiece and took four live takes with close-ups added. I’m 54 and this video makes me cry every time I watch it and every time I watch a reaction to it…. And then I saw this. Excerpt from an interview with Ren by someone named Ayesha Jones. He speaks for a minute, then sings this song. “Patience” I wept uncontrollably. The song itself is beautiful and melodic. No rap, just singing from the heart. And you can see the struggle in him to say these words. In his heart, he means it, the tears in his eyes says he’s still not sure. @@hmo_mackey Yes they clearly editted between different performances, as when the camera goes close, and then cuts wide, you can't see the cameraman. But for Ren as a performer, he did it in one go each time. Possibly the monologue was separate, as that's the only place where there could have been a cut.

Oh, wow! I've seen dozens and dozens of reactions, and you are the first one that I've seen that has caught the way he looks to the camera on the word 'dawn.' That's one of my favorite bits of direction in the whole production. Yes, thank you for mentioning the eye contact :) I wish it had shown just a bit longer so that people not as alert as yourself catch it. It is so powerful. He can do so many different sounds with his voice and I doubt many can rap as fast as he can. His range of capabilities are beyond impressive. You should check out more of his other things. my connection to this song is only the similarity of struggle,, i'm undiagnosed autistic and have struggled with being a bit weird my whole life i had to start my own business because i had problems holding a job with sleep disorders and high ethics.. but managed to stay in business the last 40 years without needing to advertise or even carry a card, i run a lawn and tree service and do all phases of construction and kind of an inventor on the side after six years of development i figured out a disaster response product that could help millions worldwide .. then my insurance agent forgot to post a payment back in 2020 and the state took everything i worked the last 40 years for away .. stuck at home like a prisoner i came online and saw people helping others so i started making videos explaining hat i was. trying to do to get help and found out if the platform your uploading to doesn't promote you your just talking to your phone, and then i see stuff like this and get jealous because i will never write a song that gets peoples attn like this. so my chances are fading. and it's scary as hell to think of all that could be, but it may all be lost because one person forgot to hit enter on there keyboard..

Hello Inna, I heard this song over a month ago and it hit soooo hard for me as I am also a musician fighting a chronic illness. It was as if his words were written about me. I have gone and watched countless reactions to his music and it's like witnessing the first time all over again. I've watched it too many times to count but it seems I always find something I missed, or something clicks and it makes it more profound! I am glad you loved this song also. Also, Ren dis this video LIVE. He sang and played the music in the video, it only took 4 takes to get this final version. There were cuts in the video editing just for the camera shots but the audio is all in one! Also, Ren - Sick Boi. I am sure many have filled you in on all his health issues and being signed to a big record deal with Sony but dropped him when he got so sick.

Not sure about complete defeat. If you notice that during the ending "oo-oo-oo-oo-oos" the lights are flickering, so it's an ongoing battle in a long term war.

@@primemover1416 It isn't even a battle. If you listen closely to that part it is a combination of both the light and dark progressions, making it complete as one song rather a divided piece. If you listen to the monologue at the end, this is where Ren learned it was a dance and stopped fighting it.

I really appreciate how you used a large video insert of what you are reacting to, very good placement and size, but please turn off KZbin's terrible Auto Generated Closed Captions, they are always Wrong and Annoying! Nice reaction otherwise. 'Sick Boi' which is queue up at the end goes into his Lyme Disease and what he suffered from years of misdiagnosis, medical mistreatment and abuse where they told him it was 'all in your head,' gave him psych meds instead of treated the infection, there can be mental effects of drugs, but just Lyme alone can attack the brain causing psychosis. An 'Easter Egg' in this video is the back of the wheelchair labeled 'L.D.' for Lyme Disease. Will see if you've check out 'Sick Boi' or the works about his childhood friend in 'Suic*de' and 'For Joe' which also explain the title of his first album 'Freckled Angels.' If you get to the masterpiece trilogy that he and his videographer friend did, only react to the full work 'The Tale of Jenny & Screech (Full)' which also contains the final work 'Violet's Tale' in that order.
