As people have said this was an homage to The Shining. Jared says at the start that they will have the hotel to themselves for themselves for 3 days, but they keep on seeing other people, as well as alternate versions on themselves and are still in the hotel a week later. They are going mad and hallucinating, much like Jack Nicholson’s character in the Shining.
