Fun Fact: Dave Grohl (the singer) actually blew out his vocal chords while recording the vocal fry for this song, and continued to record through the pain. It ended up being the version they used for the album because he managed to stay in tune near perfectly despite the damage.

Kind of reminds me of Revolution by The Beatles. They had been recording all day, and John Lennon's vocal cords were shot, which resulted in the super ragged, angsty version of the song that was released on the album

I'm sceptical how true this is. Pushing on after damaging your vocal chords is extremely harmful and could've ended his career completely. I doubt an experienced frontman like him would risk that. Also I can't find any news articles that back it. There is one from 2015 that he damaged his throat on tour but didn't push it because of the reason I already said.

This song was a response to Courtney Love's claims that Dave Grohl, the drummer of Nirvana and lead singer of Foo Fighters, used Kurt Cobain's suicide as a jumping point for his band's fame, even though Courtney attempted the same with her band Hole, so Dave wrote this song and it became a massive hit Edit: this is second hand info, more accurately I got it from a WatchMojo video, so if you have a more reliable source, please do feel free to correct me

In a 2007 interview with XFM, frontman Dave Grohl stopped short of explaining the meaning behind "The Pretender", but alluded its roots go to current political unrest. Grohl noted: "That's the thing with lyrics, you never want to give away specifics, because it's nice for people to have their own idea or interpretation of the song. But, you know, everyone's been fucked over before and I think a lot of people feel fucked over right now and they're not getting what they were promised, and so something to do with that."

When it comes to volume, one of the things rock always prided itself on was dynamics, it's ok for music to be low and then build, hip hop went a different direction with over compression to compete on the radio so everything is normalised, with rock, enjoy the dynamics as part of the craft

The “different energy” in this that you’re talking about I think is your first real exposure to that punk energy. Foo Fighters are not a punk band, and this is not a punk song, but punk music is in its DNA for sure. If you wanna deep dive that a little I highly recommend for you some Bad Brains, some Minor Threat, Rage Against The Machine, maybe some Fever 333 songs, Mindset, Stiff Little Fingers, Snapcase, fuck there’s too many good ones to name just now
