The highest IQ thing that TOOL did: in 1989, when creating the band name, they did not use a word that could be cleverly manipulated into sounding like, being, or have anything to do with the word "mid", so that in 2022, teenagers couldn't cleverly call their music mid. I find it interesting that most of the things people heavily dislike about Tool are exactly why I fell in love with their sound. They're always droning on in the key of D - this makes people feel like all songs are the same, but to me it adds a pleasant tonal center to all thr weird stuff going on. Lots of confusing rhythms and math - I don't bother counting or stressing over this, its all about the hypnotic feel and pulse those intertwined elements create. Pretentious vague lyrics about spirituality - only if you choose to interpret them that way. I'd say most Tool songs have very obvious and regular topics. Love, hate, pain, loss, the human condition. Is this not what most rock bands sing about?

I never got the hate for the meaning being pretentious and too cerebral. Reading a philosophical work from Hegel, Kant or Spinoza is cerebral, reading a scientific paper is, not listening to Tool. In the album they even touch on the topic of not overthinking music and letting it flow through you to experience it to the fullest. I'd say most of the hate comes from people who legitimately outright refuse to listen to it because of the meme, or people who just can't go "oh ok, you like this thing, cool." about things they personally don't want to experience. Yeah because the point of the song is everything contains the Fibonacci sequence, look in nature and you'll see the golden ratio everywhere. So the point is "don't overthink life just enjoy it, ride the spiral"
@nickmagrick7702 Жыл бұрын
@@dopey473 I don't think the point is to overthink. Him even suggesting that in the lyrics is paradoxical, since the amount of effort put into the construction of the song is meticulous. You cannot ignore the beauty and meaning of art, but at the same time if it is all you focus on you lose the soul of the art and the ability to be in the moment and make use of the knowledge that you get from being critical There is a push and pull between both analyzing in a deep way, basically everything in life, then learning to just be in the moment experiencing instead of analyzing. Like most things, its yin and a yang balance. Things that work in this way are often done with less suffering and more fulfillment For instance, understanding the golden ratio and fractals are absolutely everywhere, then using that knowledge to intuitively understand and just enjoy the patterns that emerge from these mathematical universal truths

Ticks and Leaches wasn't supposed to be on the Album. The original didn't have T&L. The Label wanted them to add another song that they could put on the Radio. they pulled a "yeah, this is neat and all, BUUUT..." So in response, Tool made T&L. Long song, big middle section, too abrasive, etc. Not at all radio friendly. hence the Song lyrics. especially the chorus "Is this what you wanted? cause this is what your getting". This came to mind when you said it disrupts the flow and they can "make what they want on their album". It wasn't supposed to even be there in the first place, and Tool had a lot of trouble with Labels in the past telling them what/when to do things as labels do. Tool responding most of thw time with "it will be done when its done" kinda thing. They spend a lot of time on these songs. Even Danny Carry's Tom Drums are tuned to the key of the songs their in. The first Tool song I ever heard was "Hush" from their debut LP. That was back in their grunge days and the rough production and simplistic lyrics didn't really strike my fancy. Based on just that, I assumed Tool weren't for me. Then, several months later, the song "Lateralus" came on my car radio, randomly, and I had no idea it was also by them. All I knew was that I had never heard rock music sound like that before, and I was absolutely blown away by it. You should check out some other progressive bands, TesseracT’s Altered State is a literal masterpiece and Meshuggah’s Obzen is groovy madness, but may be too heavy for you.
@CrescentCrystalRising2 жыл бұрын
Tesseract's Altered State is absolutely AMAZING. I just started listening to them last month (especially to Altered State) after hearing their songs Juno and Exiled, and while it did take a little bit of time for all the songs to grow on me, the album gets better and better every time I listen to it and I would LOVE to see him react to it. And honestly a lot the instrumentals in Obzen are really unique and I haven't heard a lot like it before in that regard. I personally couldn't get into all the songs on it, but it's not a bad album at all.

The mars volta is also super cool, although the alternative meters kind of aren't the priority compared to the sonic experimentation. They're certainly there and are played with but it isn't their selling point whatsoever

I think its pretty safe to say at this point that Tool releasing their music for free online has had an objective positive impact on the world. We can already see it just with this weird fad of sharing and interpreting the music, these react videos. They are all over the place and its got people talking about the philosophy who otherwise often would have never touched the subject of philosophy

"Triad" is my favorite. After so many tight songs, it feels like the moment when the whole thing feels like it's going to fall apart.
@analyticCioccolata2 жыл бұрын
good way to put it, especially considering how the album ends with a sort of dying machine noise (think back to how the grudge starts) song's always felt like a powertrip in audio form to me, especially in conjunction with disposition and reflection, like a grand overcoming of impossible odds
@seamusburke6392 жыл бұрын
@@analyticCioccolata Part of that is definitely intentional. The band said they wanted "The Patient" to feel like climbing up a hill before taking in the glory at the top. IMO the album is about confronting anger, letting it go, and growing from the experience. So "Triad" may just be the last "burst" to get it all out.

Funnily enough this stream made this album click with me, I listened to it a few months ago and enjoyed it but didn’t fall madly in love with it but here I am now, after watching this video and everything has clicked with me. Unfortunately, I will have to resign my love for all other music I once had as I can not listen to anything but Tool and only Tool, early A Perfect Circle may be a exception but nothing will ever compare to Tool.

David Botrill is the responsible for the production in Ænima and Laterallus, he also worked with Peter Gabriel in So and King Crimson's Thrak. That's why the sound is stellar. Ed. This is Tool's masterpiece. It took me a couple of listens to digest (because I was expecting Ænima 2, but we got something more massive, different, and better) but when it hit me, it hit me like a motherf... like very few albums have in my miserable life, lol.

I wish I was smart enough to more fully appreciate Tool, musically. I can't even bob my head or tap my foot to what they're doing. It sounds awesome. It leaves me with the impression that they are incredible, brilliant, but it leaves me behind and wishing I could come along. I just cannot get behind it. I cannot groove to it, and it leaves me feeling that this is my failing, not theirs. It's like I think geniuses will love this music, and I'm just not a genius. Have you heard Tame Impala - Elephant? Almost the same feeling, but I feel they're granting me an easy mode. I can bob my head to that song, and only occasionally feel left behind. Tool leaves me behind utterly. Love them, though. Love you, too. Peace.

honestly i can kind of get what youre feeling- the multitude of layers can make it hard to enjoy the parts after looking up instrumental versions, acapella versions, lyrics and explanations, and definitely the isolated tracks or covers of the drums or guitars all showed me the amazing pieces of the songs then the pieces fit 😏

So ever since I starting learning drums a few months ago, I've started paying close attention to the role that drums can play in a band/project. I think the most impressive part of the fibonacci sequence in the track Lateralus, isn't the fact that it's very present within the song, but how they used it in a way that doesn't obstruct their sound or the spacing that is required to have everything fit within the lines and measures. Spacing is the one of the most important foundations of drumming since our "notes" are only as long as that short percussive hit. Even people who dont play the drums can tell when the rhythm or the stacking is slightly off. So little things like dynamics and texture and where they land in a measure can really drive the "feel" of a rhythm. All that in mind, watch a cover performance of someone playing Lateralus on drums. THAT'S where the real "math" lies. Watch what they are doing with their fucking limbs. Four different rhythms at the same time during the second interlude. Listen to where the accents land during the twenty measures of hi-hat licks. So much flavor packed in one single piece of the puzzle. The whole composition doesn't feel restricted to the limited space of the changing time signatures (fibonacci sequence), it feels like the time signature is at the mercy of what they can do within that limited space. Fuck man, music is so awesome. Also, "Fibonacci killing it on the drums!" had me dead lol
