waterproof USB-C connectors only cost like $1.50 when you buy them 1 at a time. They easily could have had USB-C and IP67 without that dumb cover the cost of the cover.

Not going to lie, I'm in agreement. Initial reaction was, "sweet they put a USBC charger on it, that's amazing!" Then I saw the screw holding the cover plop off and I was less amazed. Perhaps a screw with a tightening ring and some way to keep it attached to the radio would have been a better solution than a Phillips head that's not captive to the cover or the radio.

Why is it a dumb cover? The cover gives it a clean appearance when not in use and protects if from the crap that you get when out on the trail. Ohhhhh right, you just sit in your basement and the only risk of contamination you have to worry about is Cheeto dust. Got it.

I must say that the COMPACT KG-S88G with it's very sensitive receiver and pleasant audio is my current favorite. I recommend it highly. My only nitpick is that they should've made an additional medium power level of 2 watts. GMRS and Wouxon have revived my waning interest in radio hobbies. I sold all my ham equipment. Now I wish they'd make a MURS version of this radio, with weather band.

Just received it. If you have had any Wouxun then programming is a breeze. I like the small size and solid build. I was able to connect to my weekly repeater check in at 40 miles distance. Pretty hilly area so I was impressed. They said just a slight bit of static but I was loud and clear as they were. Pretty good for such a stubby antenna. I got two in orange, looks like they will be my go to camping and kayaking radios.

I'm not even in the market for another GMRS radio... Yet I find myself watching these videos whenever they come out. Always entertaining! Let's hope Wouxon leads the way in ah "inspiring" other radio manufacturers to include a USB-C charging option. USB-C into the cradle would be great too - no more collections of oddball wall-warts.

USB-C Charging Cover Mod: lots of negative comments about the hard plate used for the USBC cover. This is a VERY easy and cheap mod if you so desire. For just $3.99 you can order a flexible one where you don’t have to unscrew it. It’s a soft, flexible, rubber cover that allows you to open and seal it without physically removing it from the radio. It is not rated as submersible, but it is still water and dust resistant. For those of you in the 0.0001 percent category who actually need it to be submersible because you snorkel or whitewater kayak with a radio it’s a 0.0001 percent inconvenience to have the waterproof feature 😉. You are looking for the WOUXUN replacement flexible USB - C port cover. It fits all the “S” series radios. Model: WXPC-S88- US You’re welcome. … update: currently out of stock, but buytwowayradios said they should be back in stock in a few weeks.

I just took this radio out backpacking this weekend with a Nagoya 701 antenna. It worked quite well and I was able to hit a repeater 70 miles away. I thought that was a mistake, but I double-checked when I got home. My only complaint about it is related to the USB-C implementation. Needing a screwdriver to access the charging port is a poor design for such a portable handheld. Obviously it enables the IP67 rating, but perhaps that could have been done with a thumb-screw or waterproof USB-C port. The other USB-C issue is that it isn't compatible with USB Power Delivery, so you can't charge this with laptop chargers. At least the battery life is good.

Can you do a video about battery and charger compatibility? Such as, can it be assumed that wouxun batteries and chargers work within the same brand? Or are there compatibility issues across the models? Same with baofeing and the other brands. Wouxun sounds like who I am favoring going with, but cross compatibility is important to me.

This may be a stupid question but please bear with me because I'm a noob. In discussions of inexpensive Ham radios used on GMRS frequencies, the Sad Hams repeatedly use the term "dangerous" as in "It's very dangerous to use these radios because ". What the heck are they talking about? I'm not clear how an approved Ham radio could damage itself or other Ham radios simply by transmitting on a band of frequencies reserved for GMRS. I understand there's a difference in type certification and I guess I can kinda understand (maybe?) how a type-approved Ham radio transmitting on GMRS bands could cause issues with GMRS radios but I don't get how it could be an issue for Ham radios. And even if it can, "dangerous" sounds a bit over-the-top for something that at most might cause an equipment malfunction.

Under normal circumstances this comment would be deleted because it is "off topic" .. BUT, because you are a n00b and because this is a very common question I feel it is important to address. The "Danger" that these Radio-Karen's are referring to is BULLSH!T.. Lies & exaggerations in an attempt to make themselves and their hobby feel more important.. I have mentioned this and other fairy-tales and lies that the radio-karens continue to spew in several videos... When you hear these Keyser Söze stores, just laugh in their face and move on.

Thanks Randy for your introspect on GMRS, and humanity! Neub GMRS here looking for my 1st radio. Looking at KG-S88g or the KG-916. Is the 88 that much more advanced in 1 year, or is the IP67 the hype train for this radio? I see the 916 advertises to do emergency radio and weather frequencies. Is that a programming thing? Does the 88 do what the 916 can do also with proper programming? Just trying to compare the two. Submergeability is not a must for me. Just a casual off-roader once in a while. Any input on these would be greatly appreciated. (I know the 88’s manual may be slightly inferior, I have figured that one out on my own 👍).

I was hoping for an IP69 rating, but that is just a personal preference....and perhaps a different video altogether.

I just purchased one of these radios and would like to get a good antenna for it. What antenna do you think would be best?

I received this radio in this week and connected it to a B tech UHF amplifier for more watts and no one is hearing me when I give my call sign. I have it connected to an Ed fong Gmrs antenna. Could it be something turned off in the radio? I can hear guys talking on 3 channels but no one answered back to me when I called for a radio check. I checked all my connections and looked at the manual but I’m lost on what could be wrong.

Are you sure they arent on a repeater? If they are on a repeater you will hear them on channels 15-22, but you wont be able to talk with them unless you program the radio to use the same repeater.

Thank you for getting back to me. I reached out to tech support at Buy two way radios and they explained just what you just said that I have to program in the tones for the repeaters in order to communicate. I am new to GMRS so I'm still learning. Love your channel you convinced me to go GMRS instead of HAM. Keep up the great work.@@TheNotaRubicon

Does this radio have “dual channel watch” or is it just single channel watch?

How does it compare to the UV9GX? Been wanting that radio since your recent video review but now this one is out. Decisions…

Both are good, superhet radios.. I would say the UV9GX is more of a full-feature SHTF radio and the S88G is more of an adventuring radio.
