In America, everything has to be a literal name to describe it. However though, I really believe the term "down country" actually makes more sense here because in a lot of areas, the term trail bike is either lost on a lot of people or they're deterred by the name because the negative connotation that comes with it is that they're big, slow, heavy bikes compared to XC bikes. The other part (especially where I live....in Belgium) there's not much "trail" riding in the same sense as in the USA. It's either XC or goes straight to enduro, and you have a bike for one or for the other. There's just not an incentive to build many technical single track trails because all of these public forests must be access to all trail users...it's a small country. But even if you venture in to many parts of Germany, Netherlands, and most of France it's the same thing. One or the other... I'm originally from Upper Michigan (Marquette), and I have an Ibis Ripley (older LS model with a 140 on the front) and really that doesn't even see much use here because it's over-biked for 90% of the riding. I feel like a "down country" bike would be good for 90% of the riding here without feeling slow or vague even on trails that could, in reality, be ridden on a gravel bike.

Only a minute in and I'm tearing up. My chronic illness has been disabling for around 15 years and has absolutely wrecked my life. Although I live in the US, I've connected with a MTB coach in Spain who can take me from level-zero to level-insane over the course of a year or more. I'm thinking about moving there to heal as much as I can, maybe making the Mediterranean coast my home forever. So much coastline, so many trails, so much peace.

I bet those tires don't grab nearly the quantity or size of rocks that some of the aggressive downhill tires can (i.e. DHF). I got my shin split open by a rock (little small than a baseball) at Pajarito. Now I understand why folks run shin guards in addition to the knee pads. :)

I definitely enjoy the challenge of techy climbs, but I do appreciate being able to do laps at the bike park without the grueling climbs. I think if you've got more of an XC background, you'll like (or at least appreciate) the climbs a bit more. More enduro focused? Just get the climb over and slay the downhill :)

Nice, i bought my 1st Niner a few months ago, an RDO hardtail that started out as the 3 star GX build. Sold stock crank, wheels, cassette as new, now XO crank and cassette and upgraded rotors to the X version with AL center, also YiSHUN 1226 gram XC wheels with DT 180 EXP hubs and 54 upgrade, Xpedo M force T pedals, 21.2 pounds with pedals, It's the sand colored frame. What was the upcharge for the custom paint? I was thinking of a JET for a FS bike as well
@sydandmacky

You can dock the plastic thingy, where the sprockets on the Shimano cassette come stacked on in the packing, directly onto the freewheel body and slide the sprockets over. You only have to align the splines correctly. No need to transfer them one by one by hand. At least this works on Shimano 11s cassettes. Can't say for sure if this also works for 12s.

There are pros and cons to every setup. Narrower is lighter and rolls better (usually), wider allows you to run slightly lower tire pressures and has better cornering knobs (usually). It's all personal preference though. And 2.4 and 2.25 isn't necessarily considered slim for a trail setup

That is an amazing looking bike. I fully agree it should be used rather than hanging on a wall, enjoy it! 30 tooth chain ring? I have a confession: I use a 28 (oval) chainring on my bike. A bit of a shame admitting it, but no regrets. Those days when you are out on the bike for 6-8 hours and you need to do that last climb, maybe >25% incline... oh those days are the one where I thank myself for choosing a 28 ;)

Unfortunately VORS finally ended. The promoter retired. The main races still exist though. Most of the trails would be better on a trail bike and parts of Massanutten makes most intermediate enduro riders blush the first lap
