So far, 2024 has been a year of transitions, logistics and grinding - which is to say, a lot of cold training rides on the road. We know this will prepare us for a BIG season of racing but we also realize how important it is to keep the motivation high and sometimes that means prioritizing fun instead of intervals.
Earlier this week we were finally able to share our new 2024 bike sponsor, Ari Bikes, with all of you - and today, we’re building up their newly launched lightweight e-bike, the Nebo Peak. And then we’re going to go ride e-bikes in the desert. Join us for dry dirt, wonky calzones and new bike day.

@@spektrumB why would all these ebikers ride on trails? E bikes let people ride bikes to work instead of drive. They let grandma keep up with the grandkids in the park. They help people get over injuries. They get cars off the road and if some of them end up on trails, good. Mountain biking should be shared. We need more trails anyway.
@thealliest
@thealliest 6 ай бұрын
@@Nemysis6580 of course it is. More people on bikes means it’s normalized. When riding bikes is normalized , governments build infrastructure for it, and then more people will ride instead of drive. I'm a 75 yr old former competitive motorcycle/mtb racer/rider. The e-mtb and e-grvl bike have been INVALUABLE in my later life. Whatever your skill level you can the same level of workout, just faster further. I keep a log of my mtb and oad/grvl biking... I go faster, further and longer. Most intriguing to me, I found myself going "exploring" trails I had never risked the uncertainty of before. I live in high desert so I have to remind my self of my health limitations & risks. Give e-bikes a fair try!

Macky nailed it, why not e-bikes? My wife and I aren’t old or injured or wildly unfit and still love our e-bikes. We mix it up between e bikes and acoustic over time. Being nice isn’t shouldn’t even be an effort. Do what you want to do, be happy for others to do what they want.

I can't believe you guys sold out! 🤣 Actually I have 3 e-bikes Welcome to the club! They're so much fun. I'm 57 and having an e-bike allows me to get out and ride with people much younger than me and I don't feel like I'm slowing them down. They're the great equalizer.

Thank you so much for being inclusive of e-bikes and demonstrating their value. For many people e-bikes are a chance to ride when it would not be possible otherwise. For others it is a great way to commute and save on gas. It doesn’t matter why, what matters is that we all get out and ride and stay active.

Great looking bikes. The orange one makes me hungry for some reason! I’ve been mountain biking for 35 years and now ride an e bike and love it. I do use it for fitness training by turning it off on flat or low gradients then when my legs feel spent I switch it back on! I also like doing technical uphills - it helps develop trials skills, balance and control! Have fun!

Wishing you every success in 2024 (and more) with your new bike sponsor. As an old bullet, who loves the mountains, try building endurance (low heart rate) without an ebike! The alternatives; an indoor trainer or a flat road are simply too painful to consider. What a magic tool, you can control your input power to just what you need, have fun, and keep on top of your skills!

Loved the video and comments about e-bikes. My husband and I switched from analog (he still has his) to an Orbea Rise 3 years ago. Now we both have the Pivot Shuttle LS, which has the same motor as your Ari Nebo. We loved that it was light and rode just like our analog bikes. As you mentioned towards the end of the vid, you need to tune the bikes to your liking. We've tuned ours so that we run out of battery at about the same time. We also have a profile that mimics analog, so that when we ride with analog bikes, the motor is just taking away the extra weight and drag of the ebike 🙂. What I really appreciated with your comments is that folks of different fitness levels, or endurance can now ride together. That was the primary reason I bought one years ago. I was struggling to keep up with all the men I ride with and it was totally stressing me out. The light e-bike took away all the stress and let's me ride with the guys without pinning my heart rate to the red zone for the entire time ! What people need to realize is that these are NOT motorcycles, and you still have to work at it, as we heard you both breathing heaving during your ride 🙂. The best part, IMHO is that it will keep me in the mountain biking game for years to come, which is fantastic. And for all you ebike haters, lighten up, it's ok to have fun. Peace out

I live in hilly country and as a person with serious heart issues, I can dial in exactly what assistance I need to maintain my target heart rate at any given moment. Love your comments on ebikes. I used to hate'em. However, what changed my mind was a young cardiac patient who loved mountain biking who, otherwise, couldn't without the ebike. Also, I'd see people out on trails on ebikes- older or out of shape folks who were just trying to get out there and have some fun on a trail. Why would I bag on someone if they are just trying to get better or explore? Yup. completely changed my mind on the things. I'm not going to get one any time soon, but better understand why people go to them.

I think people are generally coming around on ebikes, there's always gonna be the pinkbike commenters who turn their noses up at em but they've got a place for just about everyone. My dad's got an ebike and he can join me now, I've used it for practicing downhill, just getting to focus on technique and not breathing through my eyeballs. As a mechanic they can be frustrating as they come with a unique set of problems and serviceability but ultimately i'm glad more people can be part of our sport, and those of us that are already here have more options. Also super sweet to see the koryak finishing kit, feel like i only ever see it on s-tec and when our shimano rep comes around. Also also it looks like y'all have got a bonkers amount of seat tube available on these, i reckon both of you could fit a properly huge dropper if you didn't care about the weight increase As always, sweet vid, glad you're well, bikes look sweet! :)

Stairway to Hell is much easier to follow up but brutally hard to stay on the bike for the first half. The descent from Stairway is SO GOOD, though! Some of the best technical riding around but barely marked. I went out with white spray pain a month ago and was marking it better but gashed my shin on my pedal, which ruined my plans. I would love to see a tutorial on using the app to change the support you get (as you talk about around 31:40). I'm currently on a Giant Elite 3 and the app is super easy to use on it. Regarding ebikes in general, the only "safety" issue I've noticed is the need to be responsible as a rider on climbs with blind corners. I descend at about the same speed regardless of whether I'm on an ebike or mtb. But climbing uphill where you normally might go 5mph, now you're hitting 10+mph. Because of that, there's much less time to react for both riders, when you meet beak-to-beak on the climbs, so just be aware of that.

I primarily just dislike that people Strava ebike rides as analog rides and crush KOMs with no regard to people who do actually invest time and effort into them. Nobody wants to be the guy to call out their neighbor for "cheating" a record... Those riders are certainly the minority, but like anything else, a few bad actors often influence the opinion of an entire group. Ebikes are great, getting outside to ride and having fun are what matters most! I just wish people were generally considerate is all. That goes both ways.
@oklahotb3217
@oklahotb3217 6 ай бұрын
@@Tannk42 I whole heartily agree with the Strava thing. I ride both but primarily analog and the only way I'd ever get a KOM is if I made a segment in my fenced in yard ebike or not lol, but it's not the bike, it's the tool riding the bike. I do wish Strava would automatically include segments across all bike types or have a way for the segment creator to lay down a segment and then tick boxes for each bike type.

We completely agree on this as well! Strava has gotten better at asking "hey this looks like an ebike ride, want to change it?" but like you said there are always some people who don't (I'd guess out of not knowing more than malice). One thing we've started doing is flagging the rides where we suspect that is the case and then Strava usually checks it out and says "oh, yeah, ebike ride".

Thanks for this video. I’ve been waiting for someone to make sense of ebikes for the fit and healthy demographic. I’m one of “those guys” that have no desire to have an ebike and don’t at all understand the appeal. Mainly because “they’re fun” doesn’t register. I’m 58, generally fit (not S&M fit - that sounds funny) and ride bikes for fitness first, and fun second. I think reg mtbs are incredibly fun. I live at 8,000 ft and my rides gain 1500-3000 ft elevation typically. I have no desire to lose that climbing fitness, that would be LESS fun. Syd’s explanation helps me understand why able/fit riders might benefit. I retire from my day job this year and will have more time - and definitely starting to feel my recovery time lengthening. So I’m sure an ebike is in my future, but not interested now. My main point? That doesn’t make me a hater! I AM nice. Really!

I really like orange as a bike colour, but Syds bike is really 🔥with the linkage, Nobl decals and nipples that match the Kashima and the white spokes that match the frame.

We went hiking at the San Ysidro trails last fall. No way we could have ridden most of them on our hardtails. Route finding was difficult in areas but so beautiful there.

Hmmm, I have never heard of Fezzari or Ari Bikes before. So I looked up their online store. The Nebo Peak seems to be an interesting concept with excellent specs and cool features. Congratulations on achieving a new relationship with Ari as one of your sponsors. You picked a hard place for your 1st test ride. The bikes seemed to handle it admirably. Your tyres seemed a little skinny for handling the terrain. I would much prefer my 3" rubber. For my riding, even though I'm nowhere near as fit as you two, I set my assistance ranges at: 35%-to-55% for the lowest level; 50%-to-75% for the mid-level, and 100%-to-100% for Turbo. At the lowest level, the bike still provides assistance up to 190-to-200 watts of input from my body. I mostly stay at that lower level to get a good hard workout. Plus, I have often been able to travel 140 km on a single battery charge. Oh, and I agree with your comment about ratchet pedalling when climbing awkward step-ups. Sometimes the extra torque can cause you to break traction. Once you've had an e-bike for a while, you get into the habit of pedalling with a higher cadence. I'm 72. I first got an e-bike when I turned 65. It enables me to keep riding for longer and cover more distances whilst keeping up with my 45-year-old son and his mates. Otherwise, I might have given up riding. Over the last 7 years, my skills have vastly improved and my PRs on gnarly sections of trail are always getting better. E-bikes enable you to discover the joy of uphill flow. About 18 months ago, I made a significant upgrade to my e-bike. Along with getting my motor re-conditioned with much stronger bearings and vastly improved water-proof seals, I had the rear mech changed out for Rohloff internal hub gearing. This gave me a much wider range of gearing, along with virtually eliminating gear maintenance. I just do an oil change once a year. I'm going to keep on following your evaluations of the Ari Nebo Peak. Maybe one of those will be my next bike?

Syd talks about ratchet pedaling being a negative for ebikes, but that is dead wrong, once you set the power profiles up correctly you will use the extra initial boost of power to your advantage to actually get over tech sections that you might strugle with on a acoustic bike
@sydandmacky
@sydandmacky 5 ай бұрын
I didn't so much mean that its a bad thing, just that it's very different than what you experience on an acoustic bike, so if you're regularly switching back and forth ebike vs non ebike you can end up mistiming that acceleration. I do think I will be tweaking my settings a bit to see if I can take better advantage of it though!

I really don't understand the whole trail legality for e-bikes in the US. Mackys bike barely weighs 2 kg more than my non-e-trail-bike. Also that Fazua motor won't add a destructive amount of torque. Especially when you consider now, that I probably weigh 20 kg more than Macky, what's the point of not allowing e-bikes on certain trails? Although I don't own an e-bike myself I'm glad we don't have this stupid rule in Germany. On the other hand our e-bikes are only allowed to assist up to 25 km/h 🤷‍♂️

Completely agree. I think it's primarily based on people not understanding what e-bikes are/how they work and lots of fear mongering. Hopefully we'll figure it out moving forward and more trails will become ebike legal!

I have a lightweight hardtail and it climbs like hell… but with my heavy trail bike it’s a bit pain to ride long distances. So for full sus bikes a motor is useful 😅. Anyways I hope that the Ebike tech develops more into interoperability. Right now you spent 10k and don’t know if you get spare parts in 5 years. It would be also great to upgrade some tech over the time.

The spare parts thing is something that leads me to only use motors from the larger companies like Bosch. They very likely to still be in business and their large production volumes probably mean there will be more spare parts.

If we get away from the idea that an ebike doing all or majority of the work, it becomes easier to understand that ebikes can also benefit healthy, fit and young people. I ride my e-gravel over 100km without finishing up its tiny battery of 250 Wh. Very rarely I use its max power and my aim is to preserve the battery as much as possible, only to tackle terrain like steep climbs.

I personally think it's more fun building up a bike than a box built bike... a little note though, I used to work in bike shops in my younger years. E-bike is on my horizon as I become work retired....lol

The only thing I hate about an E-bike is not having one yet. Seriously though, I’m waiting for the technology to improve, the weight to go down and the price to get competitive. The ARI is promising

9:41 Never put a two mode only dropper on a trail bike. It is cool for cross country with less hub, but the lack of middle position would make insane on mellow trails.
