Love this watch. I have the same 36mm Datejust but on the oyster bracelet from 1986. I got it from my father for my college graduation. He got it for spending 25 years at IBM (remember when companies gave you a Rolex for your loyalty?). I've had mine serviced twice in 34 years and it runs like brand new after this last time. Oh, and I still swim in mine...

@@terminal-velocity111 I bought a 1970/71 1601. White gold bezel, hands and indices with a silver dial on a jubilee bracelet in 2005. For 750 quid(UK Pounds). I was born in 1969 and at the time had been looking for the exact one but 69/70 for my birth year watch and could not find one. Could find some but not the white gold 1601. I was travelling to Australia from the UK and I loved having a stopover in Singapore. Best Zoo ever purely because of the night safari. Whilst there I was browsing the places I had seen great watches before, looking for a watch for my fiancé at the time and drooling over the offerings in ADs. I'd decided on a Rado ceramic for her and called her to meet me at the store. Prior to this she had never had a nice watch at all. And she didn't really appreciate any of my watches. I was REALLY into diving back then.. She loved the look and style of the Rado. As we left she looked at the watches in the window, I had to be honest I just strolled straight in. 'Isn't that the same Rolex you've been wittering on about for years?' No box, no papers. Tried it on, asked for a loupe and to see serial number, then bought it. Mine has the 1570 movement. To be fair it has been faultless. I look after my watches and for 9 months back in 2012 it was my daily wearer. I wore it when I got married in 2008. I wore it for a weekend competing in a BBQ competition because I forgot to take it off and put a more suitable watch on. It had been polished when I purchased it and just before my wedding I had it lightly groomed and serviced by my local watchmaker and he told me the bracelet is from 1986. To me that is exactly what a quality piece should be all about when buying vintage, it comes with history. Why was the bracelet replaced in 1986? My guess is probably stretch. It was 15 years old by then and if worn loose it would probably have stretched. It also only had one service mark on the case back and that is 1986 also. I left school in 1986. Last September my watchmaker gave it a service and sympathetic groom as it was getting a little fast, I think it was +12s a day. Currently I've put it on to write this, it is +2s a day when worn and -5 when not worn. I originally had planned to keep looking for a 69/70 but now.. This is the undisputed king of my collection and I utterly enjoy picking it up, setting the time and date and wearing it. Not because it's Rolex, although I didn't look for another brand as my birthdate piece. But because it came with history. I have added history. It is the epitome of THE classic mans watch to me and in white gold is beautifully understated.

I was given a similar Datejust watch new in 1982. Wore it daily for 18 years. Had it serviced by Rolex and it sat in a safe for the last 20 years. After purchasing one of those bigger 41mm watches last year I went back to wearing the Datejust. The bigger, and heavier, watches look like something out of a cartoon to me and give me the impression people will go back to smaller watches in time.

The proportions on the DJ are perfect. You can see how the skx looks "blown out" whereas the Rolex has that classic watch shape. I think it's a mix of being a product of its time and also that the DJ helped define the ideal watch in the minds of many of us.

That is an amazing Rolex Datejust, my grail watch. Thank you for sharing. I completely agree with you on vintage watches. They do not have the specs, features, or sturdiness of a new watch, but they have survived for so long and with care will continue to do so. They have a feel and aesthetic that cannot be replicated by a new watch. It has a story, previous owners who loved the watch, and is unique compared to new watches. That is why I also love vintage watches.

Dont know why people always think that holes in the case make strap change safer/easier...with a proper tool, strap change on no holes case is super easy, you dont even have to touch the case with the tool, while you have insert the tool in the hole on watches with holes case, on the most prominent side of the case > polished sides...one moment not careful and the watch sides are scratched, instead of the non visible back side...I always use a proper tool from the back side even on holes cases.

A very nice vintage Rolex DateJust! Regarding the size in general you also have to consider the dial colour, the lug length and the dial to bezel ratio. With vintage Rolex one of the things to look out for is the service dial. Rolex started to introduce Luminova (SWISS) in 1998 and Superluminova (SWISS MADE) in 2000. No T or T < 25 on either side of the words. Sapphire crystals were introduced from 1988. The laser etched crown in the crystal was added in 2001. If it’s a Rolex service crystal there is an S inside the crown. Not sure if they always do that though. Superluminova will also be quite white. Technically it is better to have it, but if you want it to be original, then it is not. The seller should include a photo of how much stretch the bracelet has. There was a video of a watchmaker (Richard Perrett I think) who demonstrated how much work it is to re-pin a Jubilee bracelet.

It hasn't been serviced except for having a replacement sapphire crystal as I chipped the original. I love the size and it wears great. Apart from this, I also own a Tag Heuer Kirium but I rarely wear that as it wears too small. I've sold all of my other luxury watches as I've moved away from this segment and focus on value for money nowadays. As a result, I've bought quite a few Chinese specials such as the Cadisen C1032 for less than US$50 and appreciate the "bang for buck" ethos

When I bought my DJ ref 16014 made in 1984 I already owned a DJ 41 ref 126324. Both have white gold bezels , white dials and jubilee bracelets. I was delighted with the 41mm and wore it lovingly all the time. It’s big and heavy, very legible and just a fabulous watch. Then I bought the 40 years old 16014. At first it seemed small and light, the bracelet seemed tinny and flimsy, but I gave it some wrist time and was struck by just how elegant it looks with it’s slim case and warm toned acrylic crystal. The jubilee bracelet no longer seemed too light, but softly draped over my wrist with what I first felt was just a stamped out clasp feeling light yet secure. The 41mm now feels heavy and chunky, too much metal in the case makes it feel unnecessarily large on my wrist. Rolex never traditionally pandered to fashion trends, but that seems to be in the past now with the modern references. Comparing my two DJs side by side, the old lady looks classy and stylish in a way her younger sister cannot match. I don’t wear the 41 any longer, it looks like a rugged Arnold Schwarzenegger compared with a gentler , more elegant Fred Astaire. Many people love the larger more solid feeling 41mm version, and I was one of them ,but now I’m a convert to the way Rolex used to do things. The 41mm 126324 reference is a much more high precision, CNC produced ,marvel of engineering but it lacks the craftsman built quality of Rolex’s golden days.

Nice review. I would hang on that if I were you. Over the years I have had quite a few versions of this datejust. I can tell you that even from new (yes I have even bought new back in the day), this type of Jubilee bracelet (hollow middle links) is not much, if at all, different from the one you have - if you get yours refurbished be prepared to be disappointed with the difference it makes! Rolex bracelets were notoriously rubbish compared with a lot of their competition and it wasn't until relatively recently that they upped their game and caught up with the others.

Well done Mr Oleg and Mr Bond. The bracelet is the prime gem on your watch. Made in the US by JB Champion. The oval JB jubilee bracelet has now become a sure collects item. The oval JB bracelet is loser by nature than the D-Link swiss jubilee bracelet. Anyhow it can be a good idea to get it checked and if the pins needs to be replace, but don't expect a super tight fit on bracelet. A mint oval JB Champion jubilee bracelet can be 2000usd on todays market. All the best.

I was the owner/operator of an auction company for more than a dozen years. Having said that, I understand the feelings a true collector has for vintage pieces.

36mm Rolex is a icon watch not too small and not too big. look at all the high famous and high powered people like the presidents, movie stars, old school rappers all had 36mm presidential and DJ Rolex watches. All these new rapper's love the big face Rolex watches. they are tacky they remind me off the time 45mm to 55mm were in style and that faded away. Classy will always stay Classy and that's why Rolex still continues to make a 36mm today.
