Just wanted to say your strength is an inspiration! I came across your channel by accident watching some other sailing content and it caught my eye because it was in Cape Town, unfortunately at a very hard time. I'm sitting 4 months today after losing my wife; when we met we I was living about my boat and sailed the Indian Ocean together before settling and having our family in South Africa. We relocated to Northern Ireland in Dec 21 and we're planning on buying a small yacht for coastal cruising but after losing her I just want to get back to living onboard again but my mind has been all over the place until I was listening to your words and struggles. Just wanted to thank you for documenting and posting your thoughts through very challenging times, it's helped clear my own mind on the way forward and just to get on with it. Thank you

Ah so glad it has been helpful. I’m so sorry for your loss. It slowly gets better but I can tell you that it just affects you in ways you can’t imagine…different for everyone. I can’t quite let it go but I’m hoping once I complete this circumnavigation and figure out what’s next it can keep getting better maybe faster. You just have to do it. You just have to keep moving.

The noise is familiar, it's a mooring ball bouncing against the hull due to the lack of wind and/or light wind and a bit of current. We've found that if you pull the mooring pennant up tight in these light conditions so it's pulling straight up on the mooring ball you can often stop the bouncing.

Rebecca, that genoa sheet will not last rubbing/chafing on the cap shroud like that. You are at max speed at 7 kts so you could furl it a few more turns and sheet it between the cap shroud and the inner stay. But that setting should be marked on the foot of the genny when you are in calmish waters. It would be very difficult to change the sheeting angle in those conditions. 30kts apparent you should furl the genny completely and stay with just the staysail. That sheeting angle looks ok. You look anxious in that benign breeze so reduce sail, roll up the genny
@RVLifeNOW Жыл бұрын
Yea I’ve since noticed that happens with the spreader if that’s what you mean. If you actually mean the sheet on the shroud… that’s what the plastic PVC pipes over the shrouds are for… something Patrick put on years ago for that reason. But that’s a good idea to mark it how far to let out the genny in what will be upwind conditions to avoid the sun fella touching the spreader tip because that WILL become a problem sooner rather than later. I’d it’s the sheets you are concerned about… 30 years with those sheets possibly even original to the boat ;) I have spares in the bow… but so far the sheets just keep truckin ;) Tha ks for the feedback…I do appreciate it. And you bet yaAt 30 I really should have rolled in the genny but it was pretty short lived… 25 wa the average and was half reefed on the headsail anyways.

@RVLifeNOW Жыл бұрын
The spreader does occasionally get on to the spreader and I have to fuel it in a little bit… thanks for noticing… on it
@RVLifeNOW Жыл бұрын
But I do NOT secure that lifeline because if I do… the Genoa sheet chafes and or stretches it…whether it’s on the inside or the outside. We haven’t hooked them for 12 years for that reason. It started when the new stantion we put on in the Philippines were made at slightly the wrong height …so we live with it

Hi. You are discovering the different sides of beeing the captain. It is a challenge and you have to clear and precise and take decisions. This is not a democracy, it is dictatorship and you are the dictator. Written rules and information is very good, and those who do not like that and that you are the captain have no business on your boat. A sailingboat is a very small place to live in for a long time if you are crossing oceans and it is very important that one person is in charge. The others may give advice and you can have discussions but in the end it is your decision that counts. This is nessesary for safety and because it is your boat. I'm following you on your sailing, I have two sailboats on my own but I only sail along the swedish eastcoast and on my homelake Storsjön in Jämtland Sweden. God luck to you and take care.

I couldn't share a boat without having a cabin to myself. No sleeping in the saloon or share a cabin. I like the company of sailing with others but need a space I can get away from them. I would keep all my stuff in a couple of sealed bags in my cabin. None of my junk would be anywhere lying around the boat. I don't drink so when the tipsy crew start silly games that's when I take to my cabin.
@RVLifeNOW Жыл бұрын
Yep I give all my crew their own cabins with doors. Of course not possible on every boat. And I got the bunk in the main saloon with no privacy. It’s drives me crazy but I’m more used to living in a small space than they are so I just deal with it.

Rebecca was always competent to sail Brick House and be the captain. What she lacked was the self confidence to carry on after Patrick had passed - God rest his soul. I am glad to see that Rebecca has now progressed to the "lets get it done level of confidence." Although you may not have liked Michael I believe that Patrick in the afterlife helped bring the two of them together to help Rebecca navigate the confused seas of grief and steer her safely in the direction to complete the circumnavigation they both started together. No ill will too you sir but my honest heart felt observations.

By the way, your channel is the only one , that has the subtext and the thumbnail text translated to, what some kind machine thinks to be german. Could or did you choose that to be done? That is always so ridiculous, and sometimes harder to understand, than english. Especially in the thumbnails because beeing just a title, lacking any syntax or content. The results get ridicoulous. This time in the subtext, for instance, you got your sex changed to male, and in the thumbnail the name of your boat got changed from a name to a subject, beeing a real sailing house made of bricks. I think all this can only be the result of some kind of automatic "translation". It really is not. But we understand you anyway and love the channel, but why always the thing of becoming a captain?? You already were, since years, just feeling Patrick would be the only person of knowledge. Get self confident by doing, the learning goes on anyway.
@RVLifeNOW Жыл бұрын
You may be somewhat right about always having been the captain. It’s what I should have called myself from the beginning of carrying in without Patrick. But yes confidence is a big one.
