Went through the same situation, getting back in the hobby is easy and you are amazed at what you have forgotten and still remember. It's all good, it comes back pretty quick and with all the new channels to discover you learn new things each day. Welcome back, hope you stick around ;)

I love how you show your little mishaps. It’s easy to get discouraged when something like that happens. Happy to know I’m not the only one hahaha.

I built this kit in the 1970’s, it was a bit toy-like as it had a dropping bomb with a trigger sticking out of the rear bottom….retractable landing gear, dive flaps, etc….but was great fun to a 14-year old, dive bombing the family cat.

I hang mine on the ceiling. I leave the prop in tact but I don't paint the yellow tips, to make it a little less noticeable. I paint the canopy frame by hand. It's close enough for ceiling display. The SBD is my next build. Thanks for sharing your experience. Thank dad too! :)

This brings back memories. This Revell Dauntless 1/48 originated as a Monogram kit. The first model I made in the 70’s soon followed by the Helldiver, Corsair, Airacobra and even the big B29 Super Fortress. Building model airplanes like this finally resulted in a career in aviation. 🤓

loved the build of this old classic monogram kit, you did a very good job of it- particularly the canopy masking was excellent- you might try using wooden clothes pegs, they have a flat and curved section to hold bombs etc. love your sound effects too,

Hey there from Australia it’s great to see that you’re enjoying modeling I have been modeling for over 50 years and I have built some amazing projects, so I think and have had some major failures but just keep Modeling and good or bad you’re never too old to keep learning. Cheers Steve.

It’s great seeing this. Your dad’s encouragement, model magazine hints, and your own skills and problem solving encourage those of us looking to “jump back in”. Thanks.

I built this MANY years ago. In fact, I remember setting up a little glass of water (as suggested in the instructions) and trying to dive bomb it as a target!

Great vid. Appreciate the admission of mistakes. Though seems you were led astray by bad advice from that magazine. I have returned to model making after about 45 years and have had a mix of fun and frustration. KZbin has definitely helped with builds of kits that I’ve also bought. Look forward to watching further builds from you.

Dauntless is a beaitiful shape ! The curves all just fit together perfectly . looks like they painted over the red on the star markings ?? beautiful job martin , loving the in-flight pose .

Welcome back to the hobby. I returned recently as well. Good looking model, and help from your cat is always a welcome sight. Check out the DSPIAE stepless circle cutters for cutting circular masks. I feel mine was a worthwhile investment. For exhaust staining, try the airbrush with very thinned grays, browns, and blacks. It can be done with the NEO using low air pressure and very thinned Mr Color paint. Speaking from direct experience.

Great job on the kit, try using a torn piece of sponge to create the chipping and when you weather it, try going over the whole model, then wipe the access off, all those rivets will really show up.

Great job on a return model. I suggest picking up the same kit and doing it again in the same manner after you get more under your belt. I just returned as well, my first was Airfix Graf Spee 1/600, on my second now, soon to be third. I plan on doing Spee again around model 7-10 just to see my progression

i really enjoyed the presentation, if this is the final product after 25yrs of being away from building, i cant wait to see what you can do a few years from now, that is if you build on a regular basis. which i hope you do. like the sniper from saving private ryan said "I wouldn't venture out there fellas. This sniper's got talent."

If I may add... You could drill out the exhaust, maybe add a clear circular disk to give the effect of a prop spinning. Just a few tips next time you build a very old kit like this (or if you were to build this for a second time).
@MartinMakesIt Жыл бұрын
I actually started drilling out one of the exhausts, but because the wings were already on there I couldn't get an angle to effectively drill. Thanks for the suggestion on the disk, my dad actually made the same comment when I showed him!

Hey Martin, What a dandy build of an old classic. Welcome back to the dark side. I bought a ProBoy myself not long ago but, haven't put a spot of paint through it yet. What was your previous airbrush? What sports car did you sell? LOL Welcome to the community. Best of luck with the channel. Your doing pretty good already.

Thoroughly enjoyed your build. Old kit but still a little gem. Can share how you made the stand? I hate to see model aircraft on the ground, I prefer to see them in flight, where they belong! Keep up the good work:)

At 16:54, I briefly show the construction in Fusion 360. I started with a trapezoid base and then extruded it with a taper. I then imported a Dauntless model I found on thingiverse and positioned it about where I wanted it. After that I just messed around with a curve I liked to get the base to point on the model where there was already a hole from the bomb release tab which I had cut off. Then made a little nub that would slide inside the model to hold it in place. I then just put text on the base and extruded that. The font is USN Stencil.

I have this same kit. It clearly states in the instructions to put the bottom wing half on first then glue the top half on. Also, the instructions tell you not to glue the parts like the arrester hook and bomb release. That's all optional though, i guess. ...I'd also like to add that this kit is really not that great. It's not very detailed and it has some fit-up issues. It goes together more like a toy you can play with not so much for static display with things like movable landing gear, tail hook, and main bomb release. Over all, I'd say this could be a good kit for beginners that just need to get a few models under their belt. If you're looking for something with more detail, go with another kit.

I had this kit and to be honest, I really disliked it. the fit was terrible and the raised rivets made filling and sanding absolute hell and for 1/48 scale the cockpit details were so disappointing. due to these I just gave up on the model, glad someone made it work lol.
@danielbritton8588 Жыл бұрын
The worst decision in decals I've ever seen. Poor Dauntless. I bought that very kit & salvaged it into a pre war yellow wing beauty. The dive brakes are the weakest point of parts. I love the kit though. It makes a good Dauntless.
