Today we took our Bonneville T120 for its first service, now while i don't mind paying something, as its not the dealer i bought it from i have to pay the full £250 for 2 hours parts and labour. 2 hours to change oil and filter seams excessive to me.

£250 for an oil & filter change 🤦🏻 Shameful I’ve just sold my Triumph Speed Triple, for exactly that reason. The serving costs were astronomical; and I was only putting around 1500 miles per year on the bike. My new Honda arrives tomorrow; and as it’s a keeper, I’ll be doing my own servicing.

Sorry to hear those issues you had. One of the issues I've learned from owning and riding motorcycles for 56 years, is before you purchase a motorcycle you desire, is to find out what some of the parts will cost on the bike if you should need them. Also, watch as many videos as possible on the bike. I have been interested in one of the most popular motorcycles out there today. Before I decided to purchase the bike, I called the dealer and wanted to know what the radiator cost. Then, I asked about the starter. I couldn't believe it. So, I won't be purchasing that bike anytime soon. You learn where the company is really making their money, and where they're coming from...It's shocking. Good luck in the future. 4/12/24.

I've just had my Tiger 800's 12'000mile service. It was an awful experience. When I got home They hadn't routed my tank bag straps back through the cowl on the tank and left them dangling on the radiator. So I went to sort this out and found 3 loose screw on the plastic bodywork, looked at the rest of the bike, then found 2 loose bolts on the engine plus an oil leak. So I emailed them and returned the bike for a check by a senior technician. When I went to pick it up they had put some petrol in for me and splashed some down the side staining one of the side panels. They have ordered a new one, but I'm still waiting. Once more at home I give it a once over, as now I have zero confidence in them, The left side panel (stained) was fitted incorrectly and the front rubber location bung was missing, this was found lodged between the frame and wiring loom and the right side panel was also incorrectly fitted. For all this incompetence I was charged £996.00. This was at a Triumph main dealer, who claim to be one of the UK's premiere dealerships, F**king speechless.

Always loved Triumph's but looking at those prices in the showroom was a real eyeopener for me. I don't think I'll be buying a new bike anytime soon and with the service costs on top they are way out of my budget. I'm more than happy to keep my old 2007 Moto Guzzi Bellagio and old 1978 CX500 and keep changing the oil and filters myself. Wow! modern motorcycles cost too much to run.

I was going to pop up to Youles Motorcycles in Manchester, glad I didn't! I ended up buying a new Suzuki, and the first service cost me £50. The full price is £130, but they did a deal when I bought the bike. I still fancy a Triumph, but I don't think I'll be buying a new one, especially from Youles Motorcycles - what a rip-off!

My Triumph TR6 with a Magneto and a bolt on hardtail frame it's almost 60 years old. When the pair of camshaft wore out it was the only time the engine cases were split and anything questionable was replaced. The sludge trap was almost full so we threw it away rather than bother to clean it and replaced it with a new one for $7. The rigid frame is very easy on drive chain. The chain is always at the proper tension.

£250 is about average in the great scheme of things, in my experience. Royal Enfield wanted to charge me around that for the first service (and all subsequent services actually) at the same dealership I bought my new Classic 350. And that's just an air-cooled single cylinder! As it happened, I went a little further afield to the next nearest dealer and got it serviced for under £200. Not great but a little better. So if I bought a T120 from my nearest dealer and had it serviced there for just costs, I would be well pleased. Obviously not possible in your case but had it been, I think that's pretty good service (pun not intended)! Loving the videos, by the way and following your T120 "journey" with great interest.

I always think that the early under 500/1000 miles services are a bit of a joke....they are a manufacturers excuse to charge the customer for a quality control check on their machine whilst making money on something they should be providing for free.... and then have an excuse if you dont comply to their schedule (which I would argue is not evidence based) and blame the customer for not keeping up with the prescribed servicing.

In the old Meriden days your first service was free. Do they use shims for valve adjustment or rocker arm? After having a hydraulic leak adjusted valves on my Sportster for 25 years as well as enjoying nice clean smooth belt-drive I would never buy anything that would make me have to adjust the valves and deal with the chain again. I deal with those on my vintage bikes but not on my modern Sportster. Even if my new Sportster is now 25 years old. I sure would not buy any motorcycle in which the cams had to be removed in order to adjust The valves. I am not a horsepower freak who needs Grand Prix levels of horsepower followed by Grand Prix levels of Maintenance and expense. That's what I like about the original Triumph. It was designed by a motorcyclist so everything is easy to do on the bike. The same cannot be said for new motorcycles which are a collection of government regulations on two wheels.

Because most services are just oil & filter, a quick check if things are tight, adjust chain & oil, check wear on sprockets. As for Software update, i agree with more electronics come more plug machines in to check and that machines cost lots of money. You have to admit £90 an hour is a bit much

@@MOTOUK1 I'm retired now, but I worked as a car mechanic at an independent garage. Our labour rates were less than half of the franchised main dealers, and I suspect the same applies to the bike trade (it's over 30 years since I last bought a new bike, and I only had the free first service done by them). At the end of the day all the dealer has to do is bill triumph for the labour part. I'm not sure I understand your serving strategy. You're going to now service the bike yourself, a big thumbs up (more riders should do this, I feel) . However, doing so will presumably void the (2 year?) warranty, yet you got them to do the first service (always a con, regardless of manufacturer )?? My Ducati annual service cost for the 2 years warranty period was similar, about £270. It's going to be 3 years old come the summer so I will now service it myself. The mechanic at the dealer thought the extended warranty was well worth considering. However, when I checked carefully, it wasn't even Ducati, although it was branded as such. It was some dubious third-party, extended warranty 'contractors' who do many car and bike brands.

Decent motul oil and filter off e bay are max £40. They probably use a massive 25 gallon drum of cheapest oil they can. 1st service should be free apart from parts. Its a damned good reason never to buy a triumph. I used to be ina RAT club when the local triumph dealer folded the club allowed other brands to join the club. A few years ago in t hat club I had a 21 yr old VFR I serviced it it’s whole life. The guys in the club with a variety of triumphs had non stop electrical gremlins. One had a brand new trophy nearly £14k with all kit on. Had 3 dashboards until he sold it. I would love a triumph but there is too much evidence on I tube alone and triumph forums about their quality control issues. Sorry triumph but rather have an Enfield for that reason, at least I can fix it myself or better still stay with my honda. My honda nc750 was an absolute cinch to service including the valves and brakes all very accessible. I also own a 17 year old car I have just paid £700 to have it reustproofed ,inside chassis etc as its easy to repair, spares galore esp in Europe and I will be keeping it until it or I die. IAM semi retired and I just don’t have the money to chuck at this sort of thing. Shame as aesthetically Triumphs are beautiful. Bring production back to Uk and get on top of dealer rip offs.
