It will do great. Its essentially AWD with Duratracs until you lock the center. Pretty ideal vehicle for that weather. I love Land Rovers. They're just so expensive to maintain.

Jona T & Ryan Martinage, all y’all are humorous. My Range Rover was in the shop as much as it was on the road, I literally had to keep my old car so I had something dependable to drive when the Land Rover was down and OOS. I have to question your sanity, who would actually depend on this vehicle to get you home after any road trip? I took a two week vacation from Texas to Oregon, and we had to rent a car to get home as the Range Rover had two shop visits on the trip up. Who does that? It cost me over $2000 bucks to have it shipped back to Texas because the Salem, Oregon dealership took a long pause and said he wouldn’t recommend DRIVING it back to Texas. Keep in mind it was one year old at the time and had about 20,000 miles. The dealership where I bought it STRONGLY recommended an aftermarket warranty, they even called me twice after purchase to say I could still get it. Later I found out why, the transmission had to be replaced once in the first year, twice in the second year. They KNOW it’s junk!

@@Erin-Thor that's a range rover, entirely different operating system, engine and drive train. I own a discovery 2 2004 identical to the one in the video and have driven it thousands of miles through many different conditions and it never let's me down. It's all in how you take care of them.

One thing I love about the Disco's traction control is that it does NOT reduce engine power when it loses traction like other vehicles do, and that can be a lifesaver offroad. I was going through a dirt road in my titan xd when I hit some slick surface mud and it completely took away all engine power to where it came to a stop, foot to the floor and it was just barely above an idle. Had to engage 4wd in a place I shouldn't have had to because the mud was literally an inch deep. Doesn't help that it's light in the rear and nose heavy with the cummins. And my Disco doesn't slide or fishtail like my pickup does. I've had alot of vehicles, and when it comes to offroad it's hard to beat a disco. Just a $600 terrafirma 3 inch lift and 265/75/16 treadwright claw tires make it almost unstoppable. Peiple are always in awe of how effortless it looks crossing off camber ruts and mud. And if you know where to get parts and learn a little about the vehicle it really isn't expensive or difficult to maintain.

I live in Ireland and over here mountain rescue groups use Land Rover Discovery and Defenders quite a bit. So if mountain rescue use Defenders and Discoveries they must be good.

Torque goes to the axle with the least traction. What you witnessed is exactly why Land Rover went back to allowing the operator to lock the center differential in 2004.

Well your mostly right, although the torque split doesn't change. Even though the front wheels are spinning faster then back wheels they are still receiving the same amount of torque. Open differentials don't send all the torque to one side. Instead what happens is that the amount of torque produced by the engine is limited, and it only produces enough torque to spin the side with no traction. Engineering Explained has some pretty good videos explaining this. Something else to keep in mind is that torque is based on friction, so by braking the front wheels you create friction and therefore you can put down more torque. Which is probably why Land Rover ditched the locking center diff. While its not quite as good as a locking diff its way better then just weak limited slip or open center diffs.

Driving with cdl engaged in snow is extremely dangerous, you lose a lot of steering and control. It should only be used when going really slow in a straight line.

That's a rhetorical question. I'm seriously thinking about buying a 2004 Land Rover Discovery myself and if I get one, I'm not going to dork around trying to get where I want to go in snow with the center differential unlocked when the point of being able to lock it is to maximize traction in low-traction situations.

@@jerroldshelton9367 I own a 2002 with no CDL, have never been stuck anywhere, the traction control system works beautifully, notice in the video when he took off with CDL on he went sideways, locking the Diff makes the vehicle unstable, plus, discoveries have weak front driveshafts and in a situation when the front and rear wheels are fighting each other (when you lock the center Diff and try to turn you get a lot of binding) it might break, and when they break they slam into the transmission and send gears flying everywhere.

@@Morpheux1 I live in rural Wales where there's often interesting weather . My office is at the end of a one mile track and I often tow heavy trailers across fields. I have a 1996 Discovery Tdi diesel with manual transmission, and it's also my every day car. Not sure if the North American market imports manual diesels and if true Americans are missing out on the best version of Discovery 1 and 2. At 22 years old it's service needs are reasonable. Pulling much newer vehicles out of snow and mud is a regular winter calling. The centre diff lock should never be used for any longer than is required to get out of a sticky moment. It's all in the operating manual . Don't go faster than 5mph and as straight as possible. Unlock at the earliest opportunity. Land Rover's permanent four wheel drive system is even now a bit special. For the avoidance of doubt it's not AWD. Many, if not most, modern four wheel drive (not AWD) trucks use part time FWD for practical reasons consequential to less developed technology. As I said, Land Rover's permanent four wheel drive system is a bit special.

I’ve owned or driven just about every kind of SUV or truck in the snow. I even owned a 1993 Land Rover Defender. With that said. The Discovery is hands down, the best vehicle to drive in the snow. The Discovery 2 does not get stuck in the snow. As for the new Discovery’s? They are nice but not as capable as the older Disco 2 .

I had a 300tdi discovery one life live it,,,,,lying under it 😂 joking apart it was a bit gutless but you could repair it with basic mechanical knowledge cheaply. Every mot it would want work front prop universal joints, oil leaks ECT but it was reliable and not bad to drive, I always had Toyotas bar servising them never touched anything else in the ist 100 k and beyond.

Reliability isn't bad if you know how to maintain the damn thing. People treat vehicles universally and chalk em off as crap when they don't have "luck" with a certain vehicle. Funny how people leave comments on the vehicles they claim not to like in the first place. I had a Disco II and slid into a deep ditch the first winter I had it, put it in low, and walked right out! Later, I put Hakkapeliitta’s on each winter and never had an issue after that. Best snow tyre out there!

My 04 is a beast in the snow. The only tires I use are the TA Kao .. been in up to four feet, black ice and never lost traction or control.

A test I would love to do with my Disco 2 but not much snow here in Queensland Australia! However, just to add that these cars are not prone to overheating and hence you need that temp gauge. I’ve driven my V8 Disco in 40c on beaches and in the bush and sat in traffic all day long without an issue. These cars are old now, so if they have overheated, most cases are poor maintenance. Like any car 15-20 years old, cooling systems need to be renewed, hoses and thermostats changed Radiators rodded our. Maybe a new water pump. I helped out at a Local Land Rover Specialist for a few months last year and saw two D2 V8’s running hot and had head gasket issues. Both cars had almost fully blocked radiators. One had a faulty Thermostat ($30) part 20 years old! The other the water pump worn or at 230k on the clock and 17 year old car. These rubber and plastic parts new changed after 10 years. The owner of the LR business (35 years) said 99% of overheats was the perishable hoses and plastic thermostats way too old. Cheap prevention against an expensive failure. Others where water pump/blocked rads, and occasional plastic header tank. Throttle body gasket on the V8 so most will have a bypass.

If you hug the cascade mountains on either side you'll get snow. I lived in Mukilteo and could travel over to Lake 22 area and get snow. And then when I moved to Wenatchee I could literally travel up the road to leavenworth and have snow.

I own a D2 for 3 years in the "North". Let me tell You - GET A PROPER SNOW TYRE and this thing is AMAZING. No wheel drive or ABS/ESP is gonna help You with wrong tyre. Proper 3 peak rated snow tyres and its THE best thing to drive in ANY winter conditions. 50cm of snow or full sheet ice covered with water - it will laugh while everyone else struggles. Love it.

They brought back the option of having the centre diff lock because constantly throughout production owners cpmplained about not having it and told Land Rover to bring it back!I've got a 2002 TD5 with no diff lock, heated front screen with about eight wires working, the TC goes off when i slowly drive off a curb or drive over bumpy tarmac or a speed bump and it takes about ten miles of driving before ANY heat comes out of a vent! The keyfob only now works if i hold it against the rear window and press the button to lock/unlock and the throttle position sensor just failed at a cost of £351.19 to replace and fit myself.

the landscaping company that i worked for in new hampshire used duratracks for there shoveling crew vans and plow trucks and i have to tell you those things are tanks in snow especially in deep snow, we used them every year that i was there all 7 winters and the only trucks that got stuck were the isuzu ramp bodies with studded tires and international stake body with normal all seasons.

I didn't look through all the comments (congrats on the success of the channel, btw), so at the risk of repeating someone, the P38 Range Rover was the first LR with TC. Braking in the snow is nearly only a test of tires. You are also testing the ABS, but there are generally no huge differences even when earlier systems are compared to later systems (though many cars of that era had a not always beneficial ice mode...). You do have 4wd which not all cars have, but all cars have 4wb - four wheel brakes. :-p Wow! 29* and 3-4" of snow in mid-October. I love snow - in winter. I really enjoy the Rockies and think that Colorado is beautiful, but I ain't moving there any time soon 8-0

Those duratrac should be "3 peak/snowflake" winter rated tires. Granted they are not the best tire out there. But I know a few guys who have run them for off road/ overland and winter use. When I bought my tires for my 4x4 I specifically got a set of all terrain that had the winter designation. So I have 1 set that stay on all year, no switching, no storage.

I go outside start my D2 up. Turn on the heated windscreen and seat warmers. Go back inside for 10 minutes. When Im ready to go I dont have to scrape much off the truck at all. I love my heated windscreen! Although in NC I only get to use it a few times a year at best.

Brand new duratracs are amazing in the snow, can’t be beat! But with a couple of seasons on them they really taper off. Love the 31” duratracs on my 2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ!

Hey, guys. I enjoy your videos when you review cars and trucks. Unless you are tire testing, please don't make blanket statements on the performance of tires. I have had several sets of GY Duratracs and have used them extensively in all conditions (asphalt, dirt, rocks, rain, mud, snow, ice, and deep snow). The Duratracs are the best "all-terrain" tire IMHO. They are not an "ice" tire, as winter tires tend to be manufactured in that direction. I have had every set of Duratracs in up to four feet of snow, on two very different vehicles, which in my experience makes them a great snow tire. I currently have a set of Duratracs with 72,000+ miles on them that will still get me into three feet of snow. Cheers!

most of us in Colorado will start their truck and let it be warming up "while" we are scraping the windshield and cleaning off the vehicle. But then Boulder is a whole different mindset than the Western Slope, we also don't stand in front of a vehicle under acceleration in snow when it could slide and know our Dads into the creek, eye's rolled here.

As I know, it is not only a matter of lack of shift knob for Disco 2's. In some models they dont't have knobs but have internal parts of center diff lock inside transfer case. But in some models, they don't have knobs and they don't have internals either.

Generally speaking, the 1999-2001 models had the internals, but no linkage, the 2002 model had nothing at all (as me how I know lol) and then 2003-2004 (D2a) brought back the whole setup.

Transfer cases which begins with 41D or 42D has CDL. 61D, 62D, 69D, 70D codes do not have.

Diff lock was an optional extra on the models from 2001 until 04.. higher spec ones usually has diff lock.. if you can move the high/low range lever also sideways.. you have diff lock.

There is a nipple on top of the transfer case by the front output, if you have it yours is lockable but doesn't have the lever installed, if it doesn't is not lockable.

It would lock prior to 2004, however it was only when the traction control computer would deem it necessary. It's called a viscous coupling.

The Duratrac's are nice tires. I had them in 32's on my 2012 JK Sport and have them in 33's on my 2016 JK Rubicon. They do really well in the snow. You become bambi on ice but in snow I have been impressed.

Hey Roman and Tommy, big time question. I live in R.I., lots of snow here and I drive a 2016 Tacoma TRD off road. What's the best AT tire for the snow. I don't go off roading.I'm only really concerned about the snow. I don't really care for the good year Kevlar tires. They need to look beefy. Thanks boys. Keep it up!

I have the same chassis of Range Rover, the P38. Steel springs. New falken wildpeak AT3. They are correct it has a high pressure ABS-based traction. Low range engages electronically. It all works well. I don’t think mine has a diff lock control.

Sipes are for ice, snow tires are designed to trap snow in the thread, because snow is what grips best to snow.

Hands down the Dura-trac tires, the Ko haven't changed since they came out. They are an old design compared to modern tires.

shockracer the ko2 (2015 redesign) are new tire based on compound they use. Even the general’s new ATX uses same tread design. Duratracs do look better/ more aggressive tire.

The Freelander had Traction control as well as Hill descent control, the P38 Range Rover also has Traction control before this.

P38 was first Land Rover with traction control, rear wheels only before 1999 and four wheel TC for 99 to 2001.

I would consider this more a test of the tires then a test of the snow ability of the Discovery. Proper snow tires should be a a requisite for driving any vehicle in the snow, let alone test it. I don't understand how this is not the default in the US.

One of the issues is overheating...yep and another is engine management, air suspension leaks, central locking, leaky sunroof, failing prop shafts, blown head gaskets, failed air conditioning, crap plastic heater joints, oil pumps...apart from that its a great truck

Maybe I’m too old school, firstly seem to drive a bit quicker than caution would suggest in snow, on a highway, we were always taught abs or not avoid braking on snow and ice , use the gearbox and engine braking to control speed, and yes I’ve worked with a a lot of Land Rover vehicles, most of the uk will not see snow sometimes for years and the get a lot very quickly, in my part of the UK 🇬🇧 most people don’t see enough snow to warrant winter tyres at all, which is probably why most drivers can’t deal with it

Test every AWD vehicle you can in the snow.Including that Subaru.Although you may have to do abit of guess work on how much is the AWD system and how much is the tires. Still with some testing it might give folks a little bit of an ideal in what to expect.

I have fuzion suv tires on my 05 z71 suburban. I can't say enough about them. For short money they last, low low noise and the truck will stand up and dance in the snow.

I have the Duratrac on my rig and they perform great on snow and off road. This are the few off road tire that are rated as snow tire with the pick mountain snow logo on the side wall. Of course it is not a 100% dedicated snow tire as some winter tires but they outperform any A/T M/T tires in the market. Also any tire, eve dedicated snow tire will spin in hard acceleration and hard braking will skid. So those test are not accurate. More accurate will be will a all season one and A/T M/T side by side under the same condition. But so far this proof why the Duratrac tires and the #1 tire on sales in Canada for rigs and Pick up trucks. Because you don't need 2 set of tires to deal on between seasons.

I believe the Range Rover classic was the first suv with traction control. I believe it was first available only on the rear axle.

Duratracs are a great snow tire! them even come predrilled for studs to be a snow only tire.

Cross country tyres are not winter tyres, the rubber compound is not good after 7C. I have 42 min 4x4 winter driving on my channel. It’s a bit boring but I move through dif lock, low, and the DHC in my LR4 2016. But winter tyres are amazing in these situations.
