From what I recall, it does have to do with both eye strain and pilot effectiveness. Supposedly it assists the pilot in staying both calm and alert.

The color scheme reduces eye strain, studies done showed it provided a sense of comfort to pilots in the test group. In addition, it supposedly helps pilots stay awake on long missions.

Dear Diary, It's been a month since Drewski uploaded a new DCS video. Life has started to regain the familiar hollowness of a world without epic new flight sim footage. With the launch of a new version our hopes were rekindled but alas our dreams of living vicariously through Combat Sim KZbinrs remain just that; dreams. Bandits are untallied, Foxes without 2s, contacts are negative, and noobs are undunked. I continue to re-watch each of his, Ralfidude and hellreign82's DCS videos but with no new sortie footage, the autumn looks bleak.

The flaps auto-retract at higher speed anyway, so it's not like you can overspeed them. They will hurt your sustained turn rate a little during a dogfight but can be useful for retaining control at very low speeds or really aggressive pulls (like to avoid the ground). Be warned that they do seem to reduce the amount of wing-rocking warning the aircraft will give you before a stall, though.

Drewski, a little advice. The MiG-21 has a limited amount of coolant for its radar, I think it can stay on for 10 minutes and on standby for 40 minutes. Basically, don't think of it as a tool to spot enemies but as a FCR, something that let's you use fox-1s. Turn it on when you have tally on the bandit and want to use the radar guided a2a missiles. If you run out of coolant it's gonna stop working real quick so yeah. I haven't seen the whole video at the time of commenting and I don't know if you knew already or noticed the issue during your sorties. That said, you CAN use it to spot enemies but you're wasting those minutes of uptime just to see if something is there and it's not really conservative. Edit: manual says its uptime is around 20-25 minutes of "on" mode
@CakePrincessCelestia2 жыл бұрын
The real reason a True Rewski (pun absolutely intended) wants to conserve that coolant is that he can still drink it after the sortie! :D (Look up Booze Carrier on the Tube, it's apparently not just a legend...)
@rossmum2 жыл бұрын
It's much longer than that, it's like 20+ mins and close to an hour for operating and standby respectively. I turn it to standby during startup, turn it on when within ~30km of either frontline or enemy aircraft, and turn it back to standby (or fully off) during RTB. I've gotten pretty lazy about putting it back to standby between engagements and I still rarely run out of coolant until the third or fourth sortie, at which point running a repair will refill it.
@comeinhendy89312 жыл бұрын
@@rossmum it's been a while since i've flown it. In the manual it says uptime in "on" mode is around 20 to 25 minutes and 40-45 minutes on "standby" mode, so you're partially right on the uptime. Still though, not something you should leave on imo. Also how much does a sortie last for you? 5 minutes? Seems a bit odd but it also depends what you do.
@rossmum2 жыл бұрын
@@comeinhendy8931 20 minutes, sometimes 30 or 40 depending how crowded the airspace is or how far from home the action is. Unless you turn the radar on as soon as you're off the ground and don't turn it off until landing, there's easily 2 sorties' worth in it, more if the tempo is really high like if you're roadbasing right by the frontline.
