Brings back memories! I bought a really nice bus from Arizona years ago, that someone had installed a 914 engine that had blown up. I got a 1.7 out of the junkyard and spent a lot of time getting things sorted out. As usual, wish I had been able to keep it, but I got transferred to NYC and really didn't need a car so I sold it. I haven't seen a bus that rust-free since. 😞

I'm glad you are doing this. The 914 gets a lot of hate, but for me it is a subtle and elegant minimalist design. Watching you disassemble it shows some of the thoughtful engineering that went into it. I had no idea they had so much storage space!

You really test it with that "Crema" ...R.I.P. 😢 what a shame! It hurt me as a german mechanic ... who ever did the same, first change the oil... you can use "used" Black oil to rinse the engine... but this is not funny 😢 and far from the right way! Unbelievable stupid😮

Stumbled on this channel and subscribed. Had a 1.8l 914 myself and loved it. Working on the engine was at times challenging due to the small access to the engine from above. Really enjoyed that you got it running. I noticed that the engine doesn’t look like original to it. To my knowledge there where the 1.7 fuel injected, the 1.8l with 2 Weber carburetors (I had that 1), the 2l 4 cylinder fuel injected and a 2l 6 cylinder fuel injected. And then the 8 cylinder flat engine build for Porsche himself. Looking forward to the rest of the rebuild. Robert

Wow CT, I agree that one was a surprise. being submerged in water actually acts like a water lubricant for a while. It's when you remove the water that everything goes south. You got lucky on this one. will see what the inside looks like when you get to it. Darrin will know for sure if it's restorable. you will get your money back for whatever you put into it anyway if it is.

I like testing engines when I get them. Got a few running. Some didn't have good compression, so no start. I will tell you this, don't play with that ignition too much. I found out why my car didn't run. Pertronix ignition #1 is electronic. I got rid of the points and condenser. But if you leave power on it too long without starting it, you can burn out the electronics on the module(?). That progressive carb is the worst crap you could put on those engines. Too long of runners. Go with dual carbs or back to fuel injection. Original or new stuff. That 1.7/1.8/2.0 is probably running too lean. I'm glad you got it started. Peace CT.

Cool start, but avoid standing in a place when things are aiming at you, when you experiment something. 😏 It's worts the effort. I bet there cylinders are corroded, maybe not extremely, but also depends how long it was since submerged. Try cracking the gead loose, should be interesting. Tomorrow, if everything goes to plan, I will start some repairs on my "boxy", only minor things for now, anyway once you open Pandora's box things escalate extremely fast. Keep on.

This is a Volkswagen! =) It's smooth sailing on the 65 beetle. The tuff part is all the stuff I did for the last year! Did you watch the series? Like around 50 episodes? =) Thanks for sticking around. The doors will be repaired soon.

I can't believe it started...and ran! As far as miracles go, it's pretty insignificant; but a miracle nonetheless. Was it submerged in salt water to boot? If so, that boosts the miracle factor up.😂
