In 1973, I bought my 1972 Beetle (I was in thhe air force) that looked EXACTLY like that one. I did not want the 1973 tail lights so I was happy to get the last 1972 on the lot, although “Klem” (his real name!) would only give me $50 off for last years model. But, I loved that car. Eventually, I went back to college and by that time, it needed constant work and I had no time for it and even less money, so I had to sell it. Very good to see that it found it’s way to you. I will be watching every single video as you bring my baby back to life.

Happy Birthday Jason 🎉🎉🎉. My super beetle ‘74 was timed BTDC I used a strobe light to fine tune it using the marks on the flywheel. I would do it with the vacuum pipe disconnected at 950 RPM idle. It ran and started sweet like that…but I had electronic ignition on it by that stage.

the timing you mentioned is for emissions and a vac type dist. With the mechanical you can go maybe 5 degrees advanced or 32 degrees total (at 3,000 rpm) if you have the right timing light.

That and some of the first VW Beetle ever sold in USA by an importer as he did some simple mods for extra power before they were sold and had a specific shifter knob. Before this nobody wanted to import and sell the vehicle due to its reputation with WWII.

I'll give a good story! I bought a 78 Yamaha XT500 from a guy who bought it brand new, took it home n put two stroke fuel at 50to1 in it and fouled the plug! I paid 50 buck's for it because it sat in his yard for 6 yrs after that and he said it was blown! I took it home cleaned the carb and dumped the fuel and put regular gas in it and it fired on the first kick! The Damn thing was still like new, not even broken in yet! It had a three gallon tank full of premix that's all that was wrong with it! I rode it back to his house and showed it to him! He was so mad I thought he wasgoing to have a heart attack! 😁 I rode that bike for two yrs then sold it for 800 buck's! Best investment I've ever found!😆

Of all the things you’ve got there; are there any of the Bugs w/solid floors & body? I had high hopes for this one because I had an identical one - even same color. But when I saw that the wall in rear passenger area was disconnected from the rest of the body I had to pass. I can’t do body work so need one that will not need it.

I believe it was the tail end of the production year and they were about to start the curved windshield version. They were basically a 1972 leftover.
