Starting no dig and planning on new land. It's less than two months since I bought this acre / 4000sqm of pasture and weeds, and I think out loud with some possibilities of what I may do.
Meanwhile we continue to grow vegetables for sale on the existing quarter acre of no dig beds, which you see in the background of this thumbnail photograph.
For the apple trees I mention, I have already cut them down and we shall use a stump grinder - not a digger - to prevent any regrowth. One of the old apple trees remains, the one which has lots of mistletoe growing.
Filmed and edited by Edward Dowding at Homeacres 28th February 2021.
For more about cleaning soil of weeds by mulching, without any soil disturbance, see this video • No dig potato harvest ... .

Make a food forest in both the middle strip and giant field you have now. If you look at my land, you'll see some of my food forest strips. I really like the pond idea, you'll see a massive pond on my site. It does wonders to attract beneficial insects such as dragonflies (provided you keep it aerated well). If it were me, I would make a ~200-400 tree 7-layer permaculture food forest in that field. Fruit and nut trees, support plants, nitrogen fixers, flowers, herbs, pollinator attractors, incredible diversity that will benefit your more organized market garden style beds. That field should you a wild crazy permaculture food forest strip. Look at my land to see what I'm talking about, it can be fascinatingly beautiful.

About a year ago I said to myself, "Self. That land nearby is empty. Charles is gonna buy it and expand." :) I am expanding also. My neighbors and passers-by are always excited when I start covering up for new beds. They look forward to see what I will make of it. In the beginning they thought I was crazy. Sometimes, the ground can lay covered for months which seems foolish in their eyes. I try to include flowers to appease their sensibilities, but among them are vegetables. When they see these among the flowers, they get excited. I've made many adaptations to my beds because of the climate and accessibility of compost, but no dig all the way. Love it Charles!

I have a totally wild patch in between some gardens and lawn. The birds are all over it, darting in and out all day, and you can see the small nest in winter . In summer it is a dense wall of green. It adds so much for the wildlife I don’t mind the untidyness

I’ve learned from a Canadian permaculture grower, that if you surround your garden with the wildlife’s favorite foods(clovers, and similar vegetation) they will go for that first and mostly leave your garden alone. Might be worth trying on your new acre...

Hi Charles, because they’re so important, perhaps you could keep the wild areas as wilderness islands? You could border them in a tidy mulch path of bark chips to show they’re an intentional part of your landscape’s design, and to keep them from encroaching. I see a few comments in agreement with this; it’s awesome that you invited ideas.
@CharlesDowding1nodig
@CharlesDowding1nodig 3 жыл бұрын
Fair point but in this situation there are so many wild areas, including all around this acre and that particular strip in the middle is occupied by brambles mainly. Their mission in life is to spread out fast and colonise the nearby area, so they encroach all the time and I have a lot of work to maintain the edge, for less value than other plants might be.

I would keep the brambles etc : biodiversity haven / reserve, very important for the health of your crops. Important for birds, insects, who knows, maybe even foxes for rabbit predation. Also I would keep the apple trees and graft them with a variety that suits you. You know Charles, how in permaculture designs they always keep 10% of the surface and keep it completely wild and untouched. It is called zone 5. I can imagine that it bothers you esthetically, but we have to change our esthetic references and always keep in mind to leave some space to nature. Congratulations on the new project, fantastic opportunity !

How wonderful! I just love it when life extends favor to good and generous souls. We are currently working with our local soil and water conservation district to rehab a forest remnant bordering our property which was degraded when a development went in behind us last year. Fortunately the developer has agreed to join our efforts to rehab the habitat with native plantings. First necessity was to mitigate blackberries though, and I do miss the "wild edge" but already thinking of installing a bramble of currant, huckleberry or other native fruit bearing shrubs. Will be be interesting to follow your new project along as we work on our own. Excited for you, Charles.

@@CharlesDowding1nodig It is wonderful, yes. Several neighbors have also gotten on board to go native in their edges also. One downside is we will now have to be even more vigilant about the blacktail deer that come around. Tomorrow marks our first year here and we've seen them decline even in that short time due to loss of habitat with the development. I'm actually a bit conflicted now because I don't necessarily want more deer around the garden ... but they do need habitat. Balance is a tricky thing isn't it?

As much as I love watching all your planting, I am particularly keeping my fingers crossed for the pond. Also, I've now got some of your seed trays. Wonderful quality, and lovely people making them too, literally just a few mile up the road from me 😁 I especially like the large hole in the bottom of the cells. Whilst removing the hedges might open up things a lot it also does that for the wind, perhaps consider whether or not that hedge is being a wind breaker at the moment or not? (Which direction would be your most dominant wind). Maybe only open up a walkway in the middle of that hedge.

Might I suggest grafting a tastier apple onto those trees rather removing them? They're supposed to be super easy.

Absolutely. There's no shortage of grafters or varieties in England and apple grafting is easily done. Save those roots!

Fantastic acquisition! Great that it's you that bought it too, and not someone who wanted to put in a seven bedroom house, or a go karting track! I'd love to see you make something that will outlast you, such as a perennial food forest, perhaps planting some nut trees, fruit trees etc. Maybe even going the permaculture design route. It's the obvious next step from no dig, to no mulch (the trees casting their mulch for you)! Whatever you choose, though, I'm sure it'll be inspiring and beautiful. But whatever you

Nothing wrong with having a wild middle. There will be an established wild habitat there. Seems a shame to evict them.

Congrats on your new addition! I just recently bought a house an hour out of the city on 2 acres with virgin soil...and I'm about to start in this same place. Currently I've been packing for the move in cardboard boxes I know I can use to lay the first layer on the first plot and getting to know my new neighbors (who have goats on one side and a couple horses on the other) who don't garden so I can start with some good straw and manure right away for compost so I'll only have to buy it this first year :) If y'all were a little closer to Texas, I'd ask to borrow your son and his tractor! LOL

Congratulations! Looking forward to seeing what becomes of it! If another acre of vegetables becomes too work intensive, perhaps an orchard part or an area for chickens?

Hi Charles, Greetings from Windermere, Florida zone 9b Sunny 🌞 last day of Winter. I'm really enjoying using your No Dig methods in my Garden. After gardening for 50 years of digging my back into "broken" I like "No Dig" I wish I could show you my garden. Peggy Helbling's Garden What You've Got is all about using what you have. Making Gardening easy draws in more people to the joys of growing our own food. Thanks for always putting out such great content.

Congratulations! Your excitement is contagious. I do hope you include a wildlife area so that maybe they can keep out of your food area. I purposely grow extra enticing foods further away for the bunnies so they keep out of my food garden. I put the old Christmas trees and fallen logs down nearby so it's more homey. If you do want to keep them away, a cat or dog does a great job.

In a portion of the new land start with 5-6 sheep, move them around the grassy areas, they will take care of that. Follow them closely behind with 50-100 chickens. The land will fertilize itself.

Wonderful! Just one thing, please don't take the hedgerow out until nesting season is over (around August time). Little birds love to nest in hedges and there are increasingly few of them around...
