it looks more difficult than just digging the soil actually. what's the reason behind no-dig gardening? wouldn't it be better to prep the soil?
@thematrix36632 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that every time the soil is filled it destroys mini ecosystems and the soil is in a constant state of rebuilding. No till adds rather than takes away. The ultimate is to build the fertility of the soil to a point where little to no amendments will need to be made to have successful harvests.

I've done it like this, after Charles Dowding and others. But I am wondering about planting straight away. I've had problems with roots penetrating, not so much the cardboard as once that's wet the plant will just grow through, but the much harder, possibly compacted soil underneath? I have left it over the winter to get integrated a bit better, and even then I have had issues. Definitely wouldn't plant root crops in a new no-dig bed like this!
@rotekzerreitug64604 жыл бұрын
Could do daikon/tillage radishes for first planting. They develop a long thick root. Would break ground for your next crops. Or you could opt to broadfork or do an initial tillage, cardboard on top, compost, then plant in. His soil might not be heavy clay / heavily compacted like yours, so work within your context.
@brendacampbell23404 жыл бұрын
Don't be discouraged, over the years, the natural soil organisms will integrate the soil into the clay to a depth you wouldn't believe. If you want long rooted crops (like parsnips) sooner you may need to provide a raised bed to begin with. One Yard Revolution has gardened like this over clay for years and has a video where he intended to dig down into the wood chip mulch path until he reached native soil, he quit digging after about 18" and still hadn't found any solid clay but was beginning to see traces of it..

Would you plant other crops in here right away, or is lettuce a good starter crop since it has a more shallow root system that may not need to access the soil below the cardboard right away? Also, of what composition is your compost? And do you buy it or make it yourself? Great video.
@TheDutchFarmer4 жыл бұрын
Hey Connor. With a thick layer of compost like this pretty much any crop would work. The cardboard will disintegrate in only a couple of months so many roots be able to extend their root systems after that. Having said that, faster growing crops (like lettuce, radish, salad turnips, arugula etc.) can best be planted for the first succession after the creation of a bed like this. Then again, it's best to make these beds in late autumn and start growing in them in spring. By that time most root systems of crops will be able to penetrate into the layer below the cardboard. Just make sure there's enough tamped down compost on the cardboard layer. The compost I used here is homemade. A combination of green wastes (we have a lot coming from the farm) and chicken manure (they roam through the green wastes). For my commercial farm we buy compost in larger quantities. It's economically much more viable to buy the amount we need than to make it all ourselves. For a homegarden I could potentially make it myself.
@brendacampbell23404 жыл бұрын
@@TheDutchFarmer I have to question the rate of decomposition of the cardboard. 4 years after deep mulching under a large shrub this way the bindweed was beginning to break through. It was weak and easy to follow the root but was also seeing some cardboard as I pulled. As the shrub continued to be healthy I didn't worry about it.
