Agree. What ppl with NFL personnel experience are saying is that the real issue is the Falcons GM should’ve known in December that they were drafting Penix or a top QB. If they knew they were drafting a top QB prospect then signing Cousins to big money doesn’t make sense. In other words it shows that the Falcons personnel staff is disorganized compared to other teams. Aaron Rodgers fell down to 21 when the Packers had him graded as worthy of a number one overall pick. No model nor preparation could’ve projected having 2 QBs equally graded as worrhy #1’s overall where the second falls to 21st. You’re right that if the Falcons win big none of this will matter. There’s a podcast that’s also in video format on KZbin called The GM Shuffle. Lombardi has 30 years experience as a scout/personnel guy & he really explains things like grading players & draft prospects, developing them, what a head coaching job really requires & reviews games & points out good & bad coaching. It’s only twice each week & gives me as an NFL fan of over 40 years more appreciation for what’s really happening in the games & off the field. Turns out the NFL is a lot of hard work by a lot of ppl. I guess I knew that but I didn’t realize what everyone did working for an NFL team. The falcons made the right draft pick. The problem is the falcons had absolutely no plan this off-season. You sign Kirk after an Achilles tear because you want to win games, You don’t bring in Penix for a pre draft work out. The problem is spending so much on QB when you clearly had no plans of drafting a QB when you signed Kirk.

Guess they did it beforehand then, which is still a bit odd that they’d give cousins all that money and not just have a cheaper stop gap for their present QB. So it still begs the question of why go about it in this manner. I have faith in Penix, but it also feels like the management is prioritizing job safety over winning now.

@@smaclaughlin89 that does make sense. I’m of the mindset of if you think that’s your guy, even if it’s a reach, you pull the trigger so I have no problem with the pick. My problem is just the optics; Penix is probably not excited having to sit on the bench for likely years if Kirk remains the same, if they start winning immediately then that first round pick will be a “waste” like 9er’s with Lance, and if Kirk fails the coaching staff bought themselves a few years of job security because it’s difficult to know what you have at QB til about year 2 or even 3 in some cases. I think Kirk’s on what is essentially a 2 year deal, so I guess it’s not detrimental, but still doesn’t look all too great and seems more like The coaching staff prioritizing their own job security.

The amount of sense that this move makes goes over a lot of people’s head, the uproar that everyone has is in the money that was paid to Cousins, if he had a more reasonable salary, nobody would be saying anything, it would look like competition and that’s normal. Having 2 quarterbacks is not a bad thing, the Falcons got rid of Matt Ryan and have been absent with a passing game, wasting the talent they have had for 2 years, now there is a breathe of fresh air at that position and with a bad injury you are now covered in case it happens again. The first mistake was signing cousins for 100 million for a stop-gap measure when they could have acquired Fields or Tannehill for next to nothing. If they were moving under the philosophy that Pinnex could sit for a few years and learn, why one earth would they waste their 8th round pick on a two time shoulder surgery, two time acl surgery qb? Edge wasnt the only position of need😂😂😂Drake London and Pitts are the only competent pass catchers in that offense. Plus, just because they weren’t an edge or reciever away from a sb, that doesnt mean you don’t fill out a team with other positions so that you can plug a qb in and win one. Also, this isn’t like you’re picking a developmental QB. You’re picking a QB who could already arguably start on a lot of teams, why are you taking the most NFL ready prospect in the draft to sit. Penix is the opposite kind of prospect😂😂 Additionally, they fucked themselves contract wise: Kirk is there for 3 years, Penix for 4 years. Optimistically, lets say Penix is ready by year 2. This means either, a) You can’t find a better option and then have to pay mid 150m b) You’re stuck again with a bad QB and have to pick again to get a good one. There are just so many reasons the Falcons fucked themselves doing this.
