Exactly this. Poor management of resources. One of the advantages of having a rookie QB is that you only have to pay them a paltry sum of money (as a % of the cap) for the first 3 years of their careers. In the first 3 years of Penix's career they will not be able to take advantage of how little he is earning given that Kirk will have a $25M dead cap hit 3 years from now.

Well when you look at a deal. Kirk Cousins contract is only for about 100 million guaranteed, and realistically for two years. Which means assuming Kirk Cousins stays healthy and wins a minimum of ten games the Falcons would be needing a quarterback as a backup in two years, but their drafting position in the first round would be something like 22 to 26 in the first round draft. At that pick you not going get good 1st round quarterback, and you will overpay for a bad second round quarterback.

No look at Kirk Cousins contract, his guaranteed money is only for two years. Which means means you only have a two year contract. This forces the owner and GM to start looking for a college quarterback in two years. But assuming that Kirk Cousins stay healthy and wins 10 games each season in a weak AFC South division the Atlanta Falcons would be drafting in the 22 to 26 position of the first around draft. That position will not get you a top 1st round draft pick at quarterback coming out of college. You would have to overdraft a bad 2nd round draft pick in the late 1st round, and hope he can be a starter for you in Atlanta.

Plus, 72% of the teams last year were forced to play their backup QB bc of an injury or poor play...and with Kirk coming off a complete achilles tear, it's smart to have a quality backup...why did they give Kirk that money? Cause they do believe he can carry this team to the playoffs...why did they draft Penix? Bc they are likely not going to have another 1st round pick for the next 2-3 years bc of the tampering, rn is their best chance to get a QB.

@Morkins3247 ай бұрын
Taking Penix is not the problem. Signing Cousins AND taking Penix is the problem. This plays out in two possible scenarios. 1) Falcons make it to the playoffs in the next 2 seasons. Do you cut Cousins if he took you to the playoffs for two seasons or do you play out the contract for the remaining two years? If you keep Cousins as the starter, then the ENTIRE rookie contract for Penix has been wasted. 2) Falcons miss the playoffs in either of the next 2 seasons. This is the scenario where taking Penix starts to look reasonable, but it doesn't make the Cousins contract look good. If this is the expectation, then why sign Cousins at all? If you think that you are going to miss the playoffs in the next two seasons, why not just draft Penix and start him? Don't sign Cousins if you think that missing the playoffs is a possibility. In terms of evaluating Terry Fontenot as the Falcons GM, either the Penix pick was bad because Penix isn't even going to start until Year 4 or Year 5, or the Cousins contract was a disaster. No matter how things play out, Terry Fontenot looks like a bad GM. The reality is that Penix isn't some fresh, untested prospect. He has 6 YEARS of college football behind him (several injury shortened seasoned, but still). He isn't some project QB where you are drafting him for arm talent, but know that he needs some time to improve his mechanics and fundamentals. He is the player that he is going to be, and sitting him behind Cousins to "learn" isn't going to be the difference between him succeeding and failing in the NFL. If you draft Penix, then the expectation is that he can slot in as a starter tomorrow. He doesn't have the same arm talent or upside as Caleb Williams, but he has a lot of reps and you know what you are getting with him. It isn't like Jordan Love where you are taking a late 1st round flyer on a rough prospect that needs time to develop. It is a Top 10 pick on a guy that already has experience and is about as pro-ready as he can be. There is no universe where it makes sense to sign Cousins AND draft Penix. Picking Penix is fine. Signing Cousins if fine. DOING BOTH MERE WEEKS APART FROM EACH OTHER IS MADNESS. One of the biggest benefits of drafting a QB in the first round is that you effectively get 5 years for cheaper than market rate for a QB. You can spend more to keep talent around the rookie in that scenario. Having a rookie QB sit on the bench for their entire rookie contract is a waste of that benefit. If Cousins is successful and the Falcons are a playoff team, then you are going to be sitting Penix until year 4 or 5. By the time he actually starts playing, he will be up for contract renewal and will suddenly become expensive. Plus, he will be 27-28 years old, which means that you get a single active contract out of him before you need to start thinking about getting a QB again because he would likely be 34-35 at the end of whatever second contract he gets.
