This song always gets me. I am 21 years sober, but I remember the hurt I caused back then. That line "I remember everything", it is true. All you can do is face the fire from those you hurt and hope for forgiveness, but accept it if they can not. You have to move forward, but it stays . It's a beautiful song, but it is so real. I listen to this song sometimes to remind me to keep moving forward. Great reaction.

The interesting part, this song was originally written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails (an industrial metal band), and the lyrics were about a drug-addict (thus eh needle reference). Cash changed only one word of the lyric, and made it an acoustic piece. But with just that change, he transformed the entire meaning of the song. This was part of a 4-album project he began in the early 90s to cover songs he loved from outside his genre and demographic, to give them exposure to his audience as well. It was a something he considered a "calling", a continuation of the Musical Archivists best known in the folk and blues genres. Back in the early 1900s, many musicians (especially black musicians) were not given record contracts, and their music was being lost to time, only played in small bars, Live, with no recordings. So archivists travelled the country to record them. He followed in their footsteps after hearing Odetta Holme's song "God's Gonna Cut You Down", which was a huge hit back during the civil rights movement, and he thought his audience needed to hear it, so he did his own cover, which was massively successful. But he expanded beyond simply covering blues, jazz and folk, or music specifically by people of color (as they were now able to get contracts and recording studio time and radio play). So he branched out into other popular music and niche genres, or polarizing songs or acts that he felt were under-appreciated by his audience specifically. This appeared on his 4th album in the series, but he also covered many pop songs, grunge, metal, you name it. I like his version of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage". When Trent Reznor learned that cash covered his song, initially he was upset. He felt a strong personal connection to the song. But after hearing cashes version, he realized that while it was the same song it was also somehow different at the same time. So he famously said "This is his song now". I still prefer the original, as I heard it when it came out and loved it for many years before this version came along. I also like the one Trent did with David Bowie... That version of the original is my favorite performance. This version is something else entirely. You can't really compare them. If you like emotional songs, these will move you: • Motorhead - "1916" - (Anguish) A song about a WWI soldier, sure to mess up your whole day, lol. • Megadeth - "A Tout Le Monde" - (Pensive) A farewell to friends at the end of one's life. • Van Halen - "Eruption" Live - (Joyful) Just a great vibe. • Demons and Wizards - "Fiddler on the Green" - (Sad) A song about the grim reaper taking someone too soon, and trying to correct his mistake by taking his soulmate as well, to unite them in death. • Savatage -"The Wake of Magellan" - (Redeeming) An old sailor committing suicide by setting himself adrift in a storm happens across a drowning man, and rescues him, finding renewed purpose.

Yes, it's written that way. Johnny had his drug abuse problems as well, but in his version there's also the double meaning of him facing his own illness and impending death. The needle is the needle of the addict, but also the needle of the doctor at this stage in his life.

To be able to get thru the song as Johnny sings is tough but in a weird way wonderful especially to know and start to reach out to people you may have wronged or they may have done to you. Say you're sorry or forgive them before it's too late. Start with family and "Walk the Line "

That is a great Nine Inch Nails cover. He made his own, sounds like a good bye full of regret. His wife on the stairs died a few months after this video was done...and he died not long after she did.

That's his real wife and he meant every word of that song. Surprisingly, he didn't write it. Johnny Cash died 7 months after filming this video at age 71 (he looks much older) from diabetes. His wife, June Carter Cash, died of cancer 4 months after her husband died. She was 73 years old. Everyone who watches this video cries.

If I’m not mistaken my dad told me the song was written by a dude who was dying of heroin singing about his life. And dedicated his award to Johnny saying he made the song what it is. I haven’t looked into the origin of the song as it came out before my time but it legit sounds like johnny cash wrote it it’s insane to think it wasn’t.

@@TG-en9urThis song was written by Trent Reznor, of Nine Inch Nails. And he was likely speaking of his own battles with substance abuse yes. But he said he regretted allowing Johnny Cash to cover this intensely person song. Most because Cash did it so much better.

@@TG-en9ur not dying. It was written by Trent Reznor, the guy behind Nine Inch Nails. He approached the song as a young man whose life is spiraling out of control. Johnny makes it the song of someone looking back on his life as he knows it’s coming to an end.

Very interesting story about how unlikely it was that Johnny Cash would record this particular song and complete the album at all. Interesting to hear the perspective of the song writer and how he felt Johnny Cash "owned" the song after this recording.
