Initial D is a REAL cult classic, not even in the anime lover community, but even in the ANIMATORS community, Japan has like this love for it because it was something that raised the bar over in the anime industry, and even put a lot of Japan driving culture into the world Initiald + Keiichi Tsuchiya were the ones to showed the world drifting and japanese cool cars, and you know FF3 Tokyo Drift and a lot of other things came from that

The Initial D manga went from 1995-2013 while the anime went from 1998-2014, all the openings are performed by a band called move (or stylized as m.o.v.e) which was a Japanese band from 1997 to 2013, they had a female vocalist (Yuri Masuda), a male rapper (Motsu), and the dude playing the music/production (T-Kimura). This is such a walk down the memory lane as you've said. The openings are all sung by the band Move, if you look under the song titles you'd find their stylized Move logo. The retro black & white car was the MC's car btw. I like the S2 opening Blazin' Beat the most, remember vibing to it and mentally humming it even during middle school exams 😂

The panda color car called Toyota Corola AE-86 Apex series Sprinter Trueno The yellow car called Mazda Rx7 in anime they called FD3s The White car called Mazda Rx7 but outdated or older one in anime they called FC3s Also in the final stage’s OP you saw the similar to Mc’s car they definitely same car but different body.. that car called AE-86 Sedan Trueno which means 3 doors and Mc’s Sprinter Truen has 4 doors

It's just so sad that this show also made the Trueno outrageously expensive as well, and so hard to find as well here in the states, as I believe some regulations passed back in the 90's basically making importing them from Japan illegal in some regard, so the only ones over here are the 10k or so that we're already over here beforehand.

This series was the one that made me a big fan of m.o.v.e. they did all of the intro & ending songs. As for what the 90s anime plot, its about a tofu delivery driver who's skills were noticed by the street racing circuit. Main panda color Ae86 Trueno was the main car they used throughout the series (got a slight upgrade later on)

You NEED to listen to the OSTs for this anime. It has so much amazing music, specifically 'Space Boy,' 'No One Sleep In Tokyo,' 'Running In The 90s,' 'Back On The Rocks,'..... so many good tracks but these are the first ones that pop in my head. This anime started in 1998, so yea it's pretty old now, but man it still gets me pumped to listen to the music from it, still have a lot of them on some playlists. The main car in this anime is a Trueno, which in American/European import cars the equivalent would be the '87 Toyota Corolla with flip lights. There's a lot of amazing cars in this, but you'll need to look up the makes outside of Japan to equate them to the cars you might know

Initial D came to an end and shortly after the Mangaka(the Author of the Initial D) announced he will be making a new racing related Manga thats called "MF Ghost" which we will see in the next year (as a movie i think)[anyway it got announced] . It plays in the future with electric Cars i believe i havent read the Manga tho.

The style of this music was called Eurobeat, most if not all of the intro songs were performed by a group called M.o.v.e. and this anime was a big hit among street racers during its release in the mid 90s.

I was never a racing fan and when it came to anime i was always put off even by the animation back in the day, but one day i was like lemme check it out and wow , The Anime focuses on characters and the cars and it has great char development . its a great watch and if you liked the Openings the whole anime has great music especially during the actual episode races

Funny that you say it gives you Sega vibes, because the Initial D video games were actually published by Sega. If you were in arcades in the 90s and 2000s, there's a good chance you played one! That's actually where I'm most familiar with the series. I didn't even know it was an anime until much later.

One of the best things about this show is that as a car shows up on screen for the first time, the people in the show will tell you what it is, like "I can't believe it, the fastest driver on this mountain drives an 86?!" Referring to an AEA86 the chassis code for a model of Toyota Corolla, same for the S13, S14 which are models of Nissan Silvia and the FC and FD which are different models of Mazda Rx-7 driven by a set of brothers.

Calling a car by the name of its' chassis code was popular in the Japanese racing scene because that would indicate how it drove, what kind of engine it came with, what kind of general body shape it used, which wheels the drivetrain used, etc. In the show the main character even proves that he can easily drive a car he's never touched before because it is so similar to his own.

Your comment at the end that he didn't spill the water is actually a key point in the manga / anime. The main character, Takumi's father (Bunta) owns a tofu shop and makes Takumi make pre-dawn deliveries of tofu to his customers in the family Toyota AE86. This starts when he's a middle schooler. Takumi's told that if water from the partially filled cup spills while there's tofu in the back for delivery, it'll get ruined (essentially, don't jostle the fresh, soft tofu). He believes it and starts slow and eventually gets faster over time. Eventually he gets so smooth with car control and vehicle weight shift, he can keep the water just on the edge of the cup lip with the car movement alone. It's a very anime moment :) Turns out Bunta is a former street racer and extremely good (likely the best in the whole series). This was his way of getting Takumi skills far beyond his age. All poor Takumi wanted was to get back home as fast as he could after the delivery and sleep some more!

"Initial D" is a series about Japanese street racing on mountain passes (what F&F: Tokyo Drift loosely is about). The series is noted for it's attention to detail in terms of the street racing culture, mechanics, physics, and so on. If you enjoyed the original _Fast and Furious_ film, you'll love this series. Though I must admit: this series often only appeals to real-life car enthusiasts, as most non-car people will fail to see the significance of certain cars featured in the series, like a R34 Skyline GT-R, Subura Impreza WRX, Toyota AE86, Honda Civic Type-R, Mazda RX-7, and so on. The various racing scenes in the openings do actually reference plotlines in the series. "Stage" in the title refer to "Season", e.g: First Stage = Season 1.. Stage 3 is a movie 4. The anime has it own arcade game called "Initial D Arcade Stage" funnily enough, it was produced by SEGA~ Basically the anime follows the protagonist named Takumi Fujiwara on his journey of drifting street racing on mountains side aka Toge drift. This Fujiwara is just a high school senior with no knowledge of cars (he doesn't even know his own car name) aside from his insane drifting skill nurtured by his father from young age by delivery tofu to hotel every dawn 3-5AM. he basically has no interest in racing to begin with,.

It's street racing, but not the street racing you might be familiar with in the US or Europe, it's Touge (that literally means "mountain pass" in japanese), that is specifically japanese. The rules are simple: you race on mountain passes, 2 cars at the time, one is the lead, and one is the follower. The lead has to get away from the follower, the follower has to overtake the lead. If the follower overtakes the lead he wins, if not the times are registered and another race is held with the cars inverted: the follower becomes the lead, and the lead becomes the follower). If still the follower doesn't overtake the lead, you take the times of both races, add them up, and the car with the fastest combined time wins. Now it's a full fledged motorsport, with championships and whatnot, but it was born on the several japanese mountain passes with kids modifying their cars (not like today that they're ugly and completely impractical, they modified them for racing, they were real race cars) and racing up and down late at night.
