I live beside Sweetwater. I didn't realize how spoiled I was until I was on vacation and decided to stop in and check out a Guitar Center in the local area. Horrible, horrible experience. Sweetwater is like a musician's paradise. Especially for bass players, since a lot of other music stores cut us short.

Sweetwater is the best gear store I’ve ever experienced. The sales people really know what they’re talking about and they will work with you on prices. I’ve become good friends with my “sales tech” there. He even calls me when he gets something that he thinks I’ll be interested in! I can’t say enough good things about them. Their customer service is outstanding! I’ve been on the phone with them for literally over an hour sorting out a problem with connections in my studio rig. I will never go anywhere else for gear.

i never in my life as a bassist bought a bass in my city store; i usually have to get them from Paris store or directly from japan. there are 3 store in my cities and they only sell guitar, piano and that's it; even drummer get fucked where i lived.

@@jeffjones1359 agreed I bought my 5 string fretless from them, it had some troubles with it buzzing so they changed the strings, did a setup on the nut and threw in 4 extra strings on top of it all. I couldn’t recommend sweet water enough

I'm lucky to have a mom and pop shop in my town that's been open for 50 years. They always have a decent selection of basses and it makes me appreciate them even more.

That is very odd the Sam Ash here in Indianapolis In has a lot more product then that store and believe me they have plenty of Basses and 6 strings along with about any type of strings that you want.

Had a similar experience out here in Portland, OR a number of years ago when I first started getting into playing bass. Very well known store, VERY well respected by a lot of folks in the area, but... and there sadly is always one. The attitude walking in was that I certainly wasn't welcome there, did not have the cash they were looking for (no starter instruments at all, to the contrary of their marketing and ads on the outside of the store), as soon as I started talking money it was "no, no, no, well WE can't help YOU"... and as soon as I started asking just some basic questions about any instruments they would recommend they basically blew me off. They had loads of guitars, many of them in the $10k+ area, and a few basses (also in that area). Quite a lot of them was just for show and part of the grandiose display of it all... But their attitude, and the attitude of the person in charge who I did talk to was utterly off putting. Long story short, they do not exist anymore. They were family run, and decided to retire the store. Most people who went there or shopped there are split on their experience. Mine, much like yours, was to expect more and not feel like I was going to lose cash just by walking in. Poor customer service, support, lack diversity of products, and high cost will drive anyone away.

The one in Jacksonville, FL has a great selection of basses. I thought it would be the same or better when I visited the Indianapolis store, but that one is complete garbage for bass. It was better than the one you visited, but not by much. They had a few MIM Fenders and some low end Ibanez, but that was it. I didn't even bother to look at strings.

Wow! What a huge collection of bass gear… That Ibanez sounded good, actually very good but hey maybe it should being the lone electric bass in the store. And the price was very beatable. Best ad for Sweetwater I’ve seen in years… If you want to buy gear and you don’t need to physically try it, call Sweetwater, they are the absolute best place to buy gear.

1 bass?? 1 set of overpriced bass strings? WTF I’ve ordered from Sam Ash but never been to one and now I’m not regretting it. Wonder if that’s just supply chain issues? And honestly lately, my experience in Guitar Center have been even worse than normal. I’ll stick w/Chuck Levins which is right up the road from me. Stellar selection and super good people! They love all musicians not just guitar players.

I've gone into a lot of music stores in my travels over the years and I have had this same experience many many times over. Unless you live in a very large market area and/or an area with a dedicated bass shop the selection for bass players is pretty sad.

Brick and mortar music retailers are sort of a thing of the past now, almost like an ancient relic. I suppose the pandemic doesn't help retailers much, but even then many shops lack good supply, and orders take an eternity.

I'm surprised to hear you say that, Bully, because the Sam Ash by Me is a great place! The Guitar centers here aren't all that great comparison wise and service wise! But maybe it is a result of the pandemic, both stores are limited on supplies right now.....

I went to Sam ash here fl and it was bad. People with amps turned up . You were left alone couldn't ask for any info on 5he basses and all 5he cables were behind the desk. A few workers were not that friendly to us we left after 20min.

I heard they recently filed for bankruptcy. I was at a facility a couple years ago when they were closing their office and distro in that area. The whole office was packed ceiling to floor with signed collectors pieces...

Where you at B? The Sam Ash here in Indianapolis is ok as far as its bass section. Definitely more than one. They definitely have plenty of guitars without a doubt. Our Guitar center is what it is as well. I can't remember the last time I bought a bass off the rack anyway. These days they arrive in a UPS truck. By the way, what is up with guitar players always playing too damn loud!? Dude ain't got no music store etiquette whatsoever. Then they get offended when you ask them to turn it down a bit. Smdh!

That sucks bro. I'd return the strings and get an account with SIT and be done. But that is the norm right now. Have you tried Music Go Round? Those can be hit or miss too. But not as bad as Sam Ash.

I used to make it a point of visiting larger music stores when I could. I quit after having about the same experience. One wanted way to much, one wanted $100 to do a set up, and after one tried to sell me new old stock for new model prices I quit going. As a side note I found what I was looking for at a pawn shop for a third of the price.

Bro, I here ya I had the exact same experience and Guitar Center is no better especially if you are a bass player. I play both bass and guitar and both of these stores just plain suck! Don't know if you remember a music stores back in the day named MARS. They had everything! But Sweetwater is the top music store in the nation. Going to take visit there this year. One bass?!! That sucks!! But Guitar Center is also quite bad. I wanted to check out a keyboard they carry and it was unplugged… this was the associate telling me this and he didn’t want to even plug it up. Nothing was cool about the store. Sweetwater wins hands down! Great video but please carry some lens cleaners for your video recorder/phone. I care about seeing your videos at their best. Love your show👍🏽

Yeah Sam Ash sucks. There are about 3 in a 100 mile radius of me and they all suck. You nailed it, they never have inventory. They still cry "supply chain" yet both Guitar Centers in driving distance always have stock.

In your recap, you stated that the Sam Ash you visited had only one bass…bass, an electric bass as opposed to the five acoustic basses they offered. Your video had you playing an Ibanez bass and what looked like a Music Man Stingray…two basses. Editing error?

Sam Ash and Guitar Center suck especially hard for bassists. My store in Cincinnati probably has 12-20 basses at any given time, and the only interesting ones are if you get lucky and they have something unique as a used consignment sale or when someone trades something in. Nothing is set up, the amps are all terrible, etc.

The one thing I hate about both stores is how they screw you on buying used gear from you. They are literally going to pay you half of what the lowest eBay price was for the same item. The other thing is that if you are looking for a bass in either store,...it's either, Ibanez, Fender, or Yamaha,.....that's it.

Hey you went into a bad one. Ive dealt with Sam Ash since i have been 13yos old im 65 yo now, Brooklyn, Mahattan, Queens, Jersey Fla , Tampa, Clearwater, Ive gone to bad Guitar centers also. So it depends on the individual store.

I've had better experiences at Sam Ash than Guitar Center. But I really prefer independent stores. I play six string, not bass (not that they don't make six string bases), but I sympathize with how lousy it is to find a poor selection. I'm a big fan of bass.

Sam Ash never used to be like that. They have lost a lot of customers over the year because they refused to keep up. But here's the weird part Musician's Friend. Sam Ash Guitar Center.
