First time cold water swimming in a lake - spring in Northern Sweden

I've been wanting to try cold water swimming ever since seeing Jonna Jinton's video dunking into an ice covered lake. I didn't get round to it whilst the ice was still here but in these first days of spring the water was still plenty cold, trust me!

What's up everyone, we are Naomi and Jack 👋
We are a young married couple who are all about personal growth.
In summer 2020, amidst a global pandemic, we uprooted our lives in Central London and decided to move to Northern Sweden.
We were fed up of living on top of millions of other people in London, living out of one room in a flat shared with Naomi's parents, all whilst studying, working, creating KZbin content and launching our business.
So we bought a car, packed it full of our belongings, and drove nearly 3000km to Sweden with no idea where we were going to live.
So join us as we share and document our journey through film.

Slowly walking in cold water is an excellent approach, if you are trying to make it challenging. That will do it. Dipping whole body in is much easier and enjoyable. That will trigger the right autonomous reactions in your body, so you get the benefits easier.

To do what Naomi did without taking a hot sauna first is really difficult. Jack does not have enough fat under his skin to do the same without a hot sauna first. I am skinny like Jacki and have done cold baths in this type of cold water but only after a hot sauna 110 degrees Celsius. Then the icey water feels like a blessing ...

Welcome to the north, if you need to go in , just do it, use soap or whatever and then go up, thats all. A sauna helps alot. also some spirit helps.(both of them)

The way to handle this is to first sit in a sauna. After that, the water just feels refreshing! 😃

In my highschool (13-15 y o) in Sweden we had to swim in ice water and climb up on the ice in order to prepare us for the situation if we ever were to fall into the ice on a lake etc. We could just decide to do it once but if you did it all three years you would get a cookie so... Ofc I did it all three 🙌😅 Well done to go into the cold water 🙌

You want air to be cold and no sun, since then the cold water will feel warmer. Stay calm, keep breathing and let your body to do what it does. We all have automatic systems that will help.

I’m Swedish and in school at gym class once per year we’d practice jumping into ice cold water through a cut out hole in the ice and using ice picks to get up again. It wasn’t mandatory so I didn’t join in, but I wish I would have. :)

Well done! My personal record is +6 but that involved body wash and hair wash. Unpleasant to do, but you really get a high afterwards.. This must have been around +1 or +2. The advantage of early season is that all those kind of insects wanting your blood, mosquitoes, black flies (or do you call those minuscule ones gnats? thinking of svidknott in Swedish ) and gad flies are still in very low numbers...

Just think! A few months ago, you could have walked on that lake. It’s supposed to be 43C in Seattle and n Monday and it’s usually not over 27C this time of year. The Puget Sound water is never more than 9C, regardless of the air temp. Even this weekend here, it’s still possible to get hypothermia.

First use towels and only then put on a bathrobe... Moisture, water, on your skin and clothes doesn't work as insulation in air. It does work in water, as wetsuit, but not against cold in air.
