A 280 million Euro new 22 km road opened in Nov 2023 that bypasses what was one of the worst stretches of National Primary road in Ireland in terms of road alignment, sight lines, road width, private accesses, urban congestion in Ballyvourney/Macroom, and pavement quality. It is now one of the most impressive and scenic roads in Ireland carved through one of the more difficult yet scenic pieces of terrain in Ireland. It consists of 101 principal structures including four river bridges, four overbridges, 15 underbridges. One of the bridges was constructed with the longest concrete beams ever used in the UK or Ireland. The 47km road stretch from Killarney to East of Macroom is now of very good standard and makes much of the drive on the N22 from Tralee to Cork very scenic, pleasant and quick.
