As a Texan, I am embarrassed that it was my state that produced that horrible experience of canned baby corn. When I was a child, I lived in a very small town in east Texas. I loved mushrooms and asparagus but I never realized that they were fresh in their natural. I thought that they were first canned, then presented to the general public as the very tiny fresh produce section never had such things. I was a senior in high school the first time that I ever had fresh mushrooms and the look on my face must have been similar to Mr. Chadbury's. I moved to Houston and my mother and I started exploring the grocery stores with endless displays of foods that were totally new to us. Mr. Chadbury brings me back to those hours spent with my family as learned of an entire world of foods that were all but alien to us but that we gorged ourselves on. At buffets, we must have appeared as tribal to the seasoned Houston residents. I hope that we brought as much joy to them as these fine people bring to me

They don't use salt and pepper at the table. They wouldn't really need it, considering that their traditional dishes are loaded with all kinds of herbs and spices. In many cultures, the cook would be deeply insulted or embarrassed if you asked for additional seasoning at the table. They'd see it as being told that their cooking was sub-par. I'm a bit shocked that some of my fellow Westerners are so ill-informed about other cultures and expect the rest of the world to have the same traditions as the US, UK, Europe, etc.
