Dude, you're waaaaaaaay overanalyzing. The concept behind Band-Maid was the clash of expectations between what you see and what you actually hear (known as "The Gap"). In Japan, maid cafes are a pop culture craze where people go and are served by young women in maid outfits. It's about the whole "Kawaii" (cute) thing. Well, in Japan when you see maids on stage, you tend to think you're going to hear cute, radio friendly bubble-gum pop. With Band-Maid, you see cute girls in maid outfits, then get hit with a right cross of badass rock music.

Well, it depends on which song you choose. Of course, a lot is lost in translation, when you try to render poetry in another language, but there are lyrics from Miku which are pretty straightforward, like REINCARNATION: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYKclZV7i8yNmaM (The lyrics were translated by Peter Lim, a fellow Maidiac, who is now living in Japan) Rinne/Reincarnation Taking my time I rise and fade and fall It’s a tragic reincarnation Going round and round in abandonment I’ve come to hate this excess state of mind I struggle with this hate What good is it for? What’s the point of it? This see-through secret Not more Stupid yeah Open your eyes ‘Cuz even if you stop breathing The world won’t change at all I know…. So then if it can’t end Even a meaningless mistake Twists the gears You know… The ticking of the clock doesn’t stop Get down That’s enough It can’t be fixed, I’m not waking up It separates, and life just keeps growing Rolling in, round, go ahead and go around Anywhere, to a place far away Go far away I should zip my lips Spit out this pain I’ll leave it up to you I felt like I heard a voice Close your eyes Even if the dream ends No one comes to help I know… This is why I can’t sleep Even when always doing right Nothing is born from faking it You know…. Break the ticking clock and Get down Reincarnation Living and Dying Why? What do you live for? Even if you cry out You can’t save anything in this world Honesty doesn’t pay That makes no sense Open your eyes ‘Cause even if you stop breathing The world won’t change at all I know….. It just doesn’t end Set me free Get down It’s sink or swim Shut up!

Good lyrics when they're sung well can impart a sense of emotion, even if you cannot understand them. Plus the flowing change of the melodies being sung and the lyrical content are the icing on the musical cake when they are so well blended with the intruments and the weaving together of the musical composition' (because they do compose their songs). They take flavors from all genres of rock, metal, and electric guitar music of the last 60+ years with uncommon song structures, shifting tempos and smooth multiple transitions per song, per instrument etc. With these ladies, the lyrics do matter (to them), each song has its own theme, that it all revolves aroundor bounces from one aspect of extreme to another different one. But in the same way, I think you meant to mean something like this... _..because they are that good, they do perform & play it that well, that not understanding the lyrics doesn't really matter as much, as you get that vibe, a feeling, and an emotional power from their tight, shiney, polished performance of synergy & energy._

Really too bad you didnt do the live version of this one since it has an amazing call and response between MISA and Kanami. Still always good to see more finding BAND-MAID. I'll say Take me Higher also has a call and response in it which is pretty nice. Moratorium for a heavy sound, and they released a brand new live of domination which is catchy af depending what you are looking for. Its good to see the MV too, but it always leads to the next question of well how do they perform live? And I wont spoil it for you but I'm sure almost everyone going to be requesting live songs of them next. I wonder why that is 🤔.

Welcome aboard, Jersh. You are embarking on (along with many others) an awesome hard-rock journey with 5 incredible women. Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid: BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of rock n’ rollers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Consistency (nearly 100 songs with new album, “Conqueror”), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destine for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off the rails spectacular. Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 50 favorites! "Thrill" is a great place to start: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5XWaJppgpJnorM Their later songs drive even more - Rin’ne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Glory, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE and Smile... or more punky like Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series! And many are represented with over 20 well produced music videos. kzbin.info Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE concerts such as Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA on February 14th (sample “Domination” kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5PcgnaAo5ulj8k), ZEPP 2018, Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 and some of the better 2019 tour Fan vids. Here’s three of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at super intimate venues. The first taken by Vladimir Chupin in Hamburg: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZCUpZttmNmag9E, the second taken by JT Dayo in LA: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqasinWhdt6Veas, and third, JOSER8845 in LA: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6S6i6mifKx3idU. If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BR & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009 Band-Maid members are: (Ages are best est.). Saiki Atsumi “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements, melodies and High Priestess mediator between the Gods (Band Members) and the masters and princesses (Fans). At 26 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Leader) as Miku calls her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away the persona. Her charisma, performance and voice focus the experience. Miku Kobato "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 28 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kurrupo! No, no, no… KURRUPO!! Kanami Tono “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 28 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more! Akane Hirose "Gorilla" - Drums, 29 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumRilla” is the Party! MISA "Assassin" - Bass, 27 years old. A sullen, barefoot, dark spirit driving her 5-string bottom-end to hell and back, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. The Mysterious One literally kills it… every note.. uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA!

Thanks for reacting, formed in 2013 by Rhythn Guitarist and vocalist Miku Kobato. Five Major releases so far three mini albums and three full albums with the last released in December last year. The idea behind the band is the contrast between the visuals and then the sound and also the sound and the lyrics. Members (ages between 24 to 29) Akane Hirose ;- Drums (A-chan. the beast,Gorilla) Saiki Atsume :- Vocals (Sai-chan) MISA :- Bass :- (the Assasin. Misa, Misa, Misa) Kanami Tono :- Guitars (Mincho, main songwriter) Miku Kobato :- Rhythm Guitar, Vocals, Lyricist (Small Pigeon, wide shoulders, strong grip, Karuppo) Kobato in Japanese can be interpreted as small pigeon and Miku never met a pun she didn't like or a chance to mess with peoples heads Po!!. Also they have a slightly twisted sense of humour, for example the single Alone was released on Valentines day, and for the last two years on April fools day they rename themselves, the bands social media as Band Maiko where they dress as apprentice geisha's and release a video of a song written in the geisha dialect with some traditional instruments in it. Relentless live band due to having played basically anywhere they could plug in they also tend to add extra parts to the songs live , The costumes might have got their foot in the door but they have earned what they have gotten the old fashioned way, Worked hard, Toured hard, and constantly looked to improve. I promised you the story, so I shall provide it. :) The rhythm guitarist, Miku, actually started the band back in 2013. She was working at a maid cafe, which is an establishment where the women dress up as maids and are paid to spend time with men and talk with them. She had the idea of mixing the maid look with hard rock music. Miku put out a search online, and met their lead guitarist Kanami. She knew a drummer, Akane, who in turn knew a bassist, Misa. They tried out with just those four for awhile, with Miku doing the singing, but they felt they needed a stronger singer to match the sound they wanted. After some auditions they finally found Saiki. Apparently when Saiki joined she didn't know about the whole maid motif, so that's why hers is so atypical for a maid outfit. Misa followed suit afterward, and her outfit, tendency to play barefoot, and insane skill has earned her the nickname of 'Assassin'. Miku, in contrast, is nicknamed 'Pigeon' and says "Po!" alot. Now Miku just provides the backup vocals, plus singing her own little cute (kawaii) songs that they perform in concert when they give Saiki a break from singing. From my understanding, they go for 2 hours in a concert so they all need a break on occasion. Because of this, they also have a few VERY good instrumental songs.

LOL, the English portions are the catchy bits to expand their audience and listeners. The Lyricist spends a good amount of effort, but I feel it is oriented more on making it sound good than any particular meaning. Maybe in Japanese there is more meaning, but I wouldn't worry about it. The music is amazing AND catchy. There are a lot of inside jokes going on in the video here too. Miku making a cute meal like she would have when she worked in a Maid Cafe, then Akane just wolfing it down because that's what she does. Basically trying to show off their stage personality (I have no idea how based on real life these sort of things are, but they are funny to any fan that has been following them for any length of time).

As many are telling you, it is the live performance version of this song that is special... it has a very entertaining call-and-response bass-vs-lead-guitar "battle" not found in the studio version. The most interesting thing for analysis in this video is that there are depictions of band member quirks that often play out during performances. Japanese women are expected to be dainty eaters, but Akane, the drummer, is depicted as eating large quantities of food in this video, and this shows up in performances as she chows down on bananas during breaks (she is such an energetic drummer that she probably needs the calories). Misa, the bass player, is shown drinking alcohol, and she can be seen during performance videos to have a bottle of whiskey on top of her amp which she is known to sip from during performances. Kanami, the lead guitarist, is shown trying to hug lead vocalist Saiki, and getting rejected; during interviews Kanami has confessed that she obsessivley photographs Saiki and wants to marry her, and that she tries to show off during performances to get praise from Saiki. Miku, rhythm guitarist, back-up vocalist and founder of the band, is the only one that actually worked in a maid-cafe, and she brings the maid-cafe cuteness (kawaii) to performances (talking like a pigeon--"po"--among other things). In this video we see Miku doing some of the serving of cute food, with cute presentation, that would have been part of her maid-cafe duties. Etc.

Thank you for paying attention to BAND-MAID! Let me just say one thing, you should listen to their live version. Their live performances are much better than studio recordings.

This video has little gems that reflect the band members personalities and quirks. Misa the Bass player is the silent one, the shy one, the one who likes a drink and will often have a drink (what looks like Jim Beam among others) on her amplifier during live performances - hence her drinking from a flask in this video. So silent, rarely speaking more than a few words, and dressed in black some fans call her 'Misa The Assassin'. When playing she puts so much physical effort into playing the large Bass guitar that at times it is as if she is trying to tame a wild stallion. Misa is not known for smiling, but when she does she has a real beam of a smile and I challenge anyone not to smile in response. Then there is Kanami, the Lead Guitarist referred to during interviews by other band members as a being a bit of a 'hairhead'. Kanami also appears shy off stage but extrovert on stage and sometimes looks as if she has lost herself in the music in an almost trance like way as one would expect from a rock lead guitarist. As Lead Guitarist Kanami also writes many of the musical compositions and is also an accomplished piano player... Kanami is teased for her admiring adoration of Saiki the Lead singer and has said she likes to play guitar and just look at Saiki - hence the clip of her throwing herself on Saiki's lap in one sequence. Saiki the Lead singer on the other hand is sometimes thought of as being slightly aloof, an ice queen - this is mirrored in the video by her adoring admirer Kanami throwing herself at Saiki only to be dismissively pushed away pure ice queen style. Seemingly reserved off stage Saiki is the opposite on stage using her arm movements and a confident commanding presence to express herself. Then there is Akane the Drummer, who is teased for her voracious appetite, always seen eating because she uses up so much energy in her drumming. With an apparent penchant for Banana's and a strong drumming action she is called 'The Gorilla'. In Band Maid videos, including this one, Akane can be seen eating to reflect her apparent strong appetite. In interviews Akane has been referred to as the 'organised' one by other band members and on stage I get the impression she is the director of sorts. Then last but not least there is Miku, the adorable cute smiling Maid seen making a heart that belies that both on stage and off stage Miku is definitely the Alpha. I imagine she could be quite ruthless beneath that smile. Miku was the driving force in forming the band, bringing Kanami on board with the idea, Kanami has said that when Miku approached her it was 'like talking with a 30 year old man in a young woman's body'. Very focused and driven Miku stepped down from her original role as Lead Singer so that the band could bring Saiki on board who has a stronger 'Rock' voice. Becoming the back-up singer (although she still takes the lead in some songs) Miku also learned from scratch 'at he behest of other band members' to play the Rhythm guitar - being taught by Kanami, Miku is now considered to be an accomplished rhythm guitarist in her own right. During live performances she will often hold 'Magic Time' which is basically Miku keeping the audience entertained while other band members take a 10 minute break - managing this even in countries where she doesn't speak the language and the audience doesn't speak Japanese. Being very outgoing and extrovert both on stage and off stage Miku does a lot of publicity appearances on radio and television talk shows as well as being used to promote Japan visitor attractions.

This song is I think at heart, about being in the lust of new love, the highs and lows of learning each others secrets and faults.. verses the social dogmas of 'normal' relationships (in Japan) & the general music industries attempt to coral them early on in their careers. Which is why they're crashing the mascarade party of socialites; & execs, who pretend to be publicly, socially 'nice', but the masks hint at seedier, dirtier, real selves underneath IMHO. The guy on the floor at the end with Saiki's foot on him, is played by their manager, Mr.Ogata (who himself was a performing music artist in 1990's, kzbin.info/www/bejne/onPanXuBobimj80 ).

Interesting your 1st thought was that music is its own language. I saw these rockstars a few x last year on US tour. During 1 show Miku ( rhythm gt & vocals) made a speech in English in which with a lot of emotion she said (paraphrasing) "we come from different cultures and speak different languages, but we can communicate with each other with the universal language of music." That left me a little misty-eyed.

That was the idea. Bring them in with the maid uniforms then steal keep their attention with the music. And it helps if you turn on captions.

Many have said that it's better to go live for this song, and the live version is indeed terrific, but even so, this is a really good video from them - a lot of fun. Their best other videos are for Domination (where an amazing live version from 6 weeks ago will rightly be suggested instead) and the two from their alter-ego of "Band-Maiko", where they dress as geishas (Maiko are apprentice geishas) and add traditional instruments to their songs...but those should be for a later date. You have a lot of Band-Maid to dive into first - more than you can imagine.

I think the main message is more like this. You don't tell me your secret, but don't ever think that you can hide it from me. I'm a human as well, everyone has a secret or two that s/he wants to hide and what you don't know is that I'm a better liar than you. So you don't have to tell me secrets. Just love me, kiss me and give me more pleasure. I mean love in high society in general is thought to be superficial, each lie and hide secrets from each other so, maybe that's the subliminal message as well? I don't know. I could be wrong. I'm Japanese but not good at translating the lyric word by word. This is my interpretation of this song. It's not a super emotional song like puzzle, matchless gum, alone, wonderland and such.

If you're looking for other kawaii metal bands babymetal and ladybaby(which has been disbanded) are ones that are pretty well known. BABYMETAL is my favorite a few good songs from them are gimme chocolate and headbangeeer (this one has a very interested music video))

Cool observations about maids yet Cafe Maid's are kinda famous in areas of Japan and Miku on Rythem and Kanami on lead are wearing Cafe Maid outfits, which are Servers in multi tierd restaurants. Levels of time and service are based on money and regular attendance of customer... easily Googled... Rock it on...👆🎶

Nice job. I hadn’t interpreted this song yet, and only saw the video before I knew anything about them. They often write their songs to double as “Rock with us” for the live shows. And the smattering of English makes it cool in Japan and just that much more accessible internationally. Not many Japanese bands bother beyond their borders, but a few are breaking thru finally. Japanese rock scene is great, “keeping rock alive” by blending retro with fresh genre mashups, and their female rockers have been on fire this past decade. Would love more like this... Here’s a recent interview (subtitled) that rehashes BandMaid history, and touches on music being universal kzbin.info/www/bejne/enuydKeOiZ6VfJI

I think you are over thinking it. It came out about the time of the me to movement and a lot gets lost in translation. Try the live version of this song. At times they do have a metaphor in the video such as in Domination, note 2:30 seconds plus... Cool that you are listening

See, it's simple...Miku (po), an 810-year old pigeon, got fired by her label, worked in a Maid Cafe, and wanted to form a band... BTW, the lyrics to almost all Japanese rock/pop songs are readily available with a Google search. For the record, ALL Japanese-English translation programs suck, some laughably so.

Band-Maid is better live. If you want to check out some more of their songs, I suggest the live versions of "Play" and "Onset".

WoW, are you behind the curve. Band-Maid had 3 sold-out concerts in the US in 2019. That was after their European sold-out tour. They just released a song that was produced by Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T Rex) The Dragon Cries. They formed in 2013 and have been building audience ever since. They write, arrange, and produce their songs. They are right the best Rock n Roll band world wide right now. And they are getter better,

Five sold out - two in New York, one in Dallas, and two more in Los Angeles. They weren't big venues, but tickets sold out in a day or so, as I recall, so they could easily have filled bigger places.

Hi, New subscriber who just did a deep dive on your content. I especially love the Lady Gaga reactions. I think you would really enjoy a group named EXID. A great place to start is their song "Ah Yeah" Since you like analyzing lyrics and music videos this will be a real treat. I don't want to spoil it, but it has a great back story. I can't wait to hear what you think.

I grew up listening to songs on the radio, 8Track/cassette/vinyl etc., and then later with the first music videos, 99% of the time only AFTER first hearing a song. So to me, I find the vast majority of modern day reactions ultimately very self defeating when people hyper focus on what they are watching, desperately attempting to visually translate what should be an auditory reaction, really. Who cares what they look like, or whatever image you think they are projecting, just listen to the music. Also, whilst great lyrics are a big plus, for the most part I don't at all need to know what they are saying, especially if they are being dissected to the point of distraction, during the song!
