Ok so I’m at around an 8.5 for this condensed version of both albums, I will go and listen to the other tracks a bit later to be able to better judge each album on its own, But I was pleasantly surprised by a few tracks on this. Ain’t My Bitch, what an opener with all the catchy inflections ‘Goodbayeeee’ ‘Bayyyyytch Chahh!’ LOL. I thought it might be hard to top that in my ranking as It went and it was only a promotional single in some places apparently I was a little surprised haha.

But then I heard Fuel and I’ve definitely heard that opening line SOMEWHERE before, but I not sure ive ever really connected it to Metallica of knew what it was from before now, similar to the chorus of Alive by Pearl Jam. I think that’s definitely one of my fave songs from them so far, Love the ooooohs in the chorus and its got such a great build and flow for just the right amount of track length and dosent outstay its welcome. Easily my #1 on this listen.

I have heard Until It Sleeps because its their only #1 single here in Australia, and I must’ve listened when it was part of a #1’s of 1996 rate game I ran back in 2017. It temporarily unseated George Michael’s ‘Fastlove’ for a week directly after Load released in June 1996 (George Michael also had a lengthy gap between albums at the time that was longer than Black album (91) to Load (96) - it was around 5.5 years between Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1 (90) and Older (96)).

Hero Of The Day and Fuel both also peaked at #2 - Hero was blocked by the Macarena, Fuel wasn’t even the lead off Reload (Reload came out Nov 1997) but the third single, and was blocked by Ricky Martin’s The Cup Of Life/Maria Double A Side amidst the FIFA Soccer World Cup fever in June 1998.

I also thought Unforgiven II has a really catchy and memorable chorus which I found myself singing randomly, and IMO builds on the first one’s hook in a slightly different melody and also feels a bit heavier and grungier musically. I also grooved to the rhythm of Prince Charming and Bleeding Me. The Country twang in Ronnie and Mama Said added some interesting flavour, as did the kinda Scottish/Irish feel in Low Man’s Lyric. Although This was a bit hard to rank because all of the songs had their moments, some of the lower ones I placed were only because some of the other songs parts stood out to me a lot more in comparison. Interestingly there is apparently a 10 minute version of The Outlaw torn they put on one of the singles as ‘The version not encumbered by physical media limitations’ or something because they were already pushing the envelope on CD runtime limitations.

Lastly for now, no one commented on the cover art? I had an Idea during Load of what that looked like connected with the title and yep - its an art-piece of an artists Semen mixed with Blood - which reminds me of when Lady Gaga was claiming her perfume Fame she wanted to smell like it was made from Blood and Semen. Reload’s is titled ‘piss and semen’. Hows that for some imagery. LOL.

It’ll be interesting to see from here to St Anger and Death Magnetic too - both of those I recall being aware of the cover arts around the time but not sure if I’ve heard or familiar with anything off them - we’ll see.

 Bit of a ranking below.

I understand this song and this video as "we all have voids inside us", and the thing is you dont have to fill those, you have to feel them. Those 3 characters are fascinated with the holes because they have them too. The 3 end up using the statue in their own way. It could be gay, it could be straight, it could be family. We all need to stop judging other people voids and just love them and our own voids because those are the ones that make us human.

Guitarist is Yvette Young. The band is Covet, not Odessa. She writes all the music, both solo and for the band and almost none is in standard tuning. She's classically trained on piano and violin and didn't take up guitar until in college where she got her BA in visual arts and education. A real underachiever.😁

Im like 90% certain its about heroin. Stuck on You is about addiction and some of the lines like (butrowed like a summer tick) points to IV use while (turned my nights to sleepless itch) points to the tactile discomfort that can happen when coming off opiates. Could be wrong, but that seems to be the authors intent to me.

I'd Give this around a 7.5. I thought It could perhaps be trimmed down slightly here and there, but also my top 9 or so could be interchangeable. I watched a couple of the videos too, I think I was really only mainly familiar with Good Riddance of course (any of you remember it was used for the Series Finale of Seinfeld in 1998). I did like Haushinka too (also any of you pick up it transitions smoothly from the end of Jinx?) Its repetitive but also has a good build up and bridge. Hitchin A Ride in some parts reminds me a little of bits of 'Holiday' from American Idiot, and also from one of Aussie punk/rock/pop band The Living End's song around the same time 'Second Solution' in a way. It also has a good build up into craziness in the final bit. Yeah the subject matter of King For A Day was interesting for its time, and theres bit of comedy all throughout the album too, (Platypus - hey an Aussie animal) as well as the more mature lyrical moments such as Redundant, Scattered, Good Riddance. Looks like there was a few bonus tracks there to maybe check out later too. Also having a few similar sounds, but also some ones that had a bit of a switch up, like Kinda ska vibes, the ballads, and the instrumental gave off a bit of a Western flavour or something, the slight metal voice in Take back, etc. I liked the flow of verse/chorus in Prosthetic Head and yeah it was a bit interestingly placed in the tracklist. The backstory to the title/cover art on wiki is also interesting. Here's a bit of a ranking below.

This one is give about a 8. Similarly before I knew I knew the title of Jeremy because I’d seen it pop up on various music video lists before regarding its subject matter. Also I’m familiar with the title Last Kiss which iirc was a one off ep or single that was one of the ‘9 number ones of 1999’ here in Australia. I don’t think I remember how either of them go off the bat until listening again though. Oh and the guys voice is recognisable from that ‘Daughter’ song I’ve heard on the radio a bit too (turns out thats from the album following this ‘Vs’ in 1993). I’d file it kinda in the same ballpark as maybe that guy from Live doing the Lightning Crashes song or singers like that in some songs. But yeah listening to this I thought Even Flow sounded familiar, and I recognised the chorus of Alive when that started getting into it too. I though the start verse of Once reminded me a little of like Seal’s 90’s songs’ Crazy’ or ‘fly like an eagle’ in the kinda rap style iykwim. Release had a good flow to it. I liked the flow of the verses of Black a little more than the chorus. Apparently the backstory to the album title is they originally named the band after a basketball player and after switching to Pearl jam named the album after his jersey number ten. Kylie Minogue’s 2007 album X was her tenth, but afaik it’s referred to as ‘ex’. Gabriella Cilmis sophomore album Ten might be named as per 2010 the year it was released. Here’s a bit of a ranking below.

I’d give this about a 5.5 or 6. I had read somewhere that she likes having the multipart songs end somewhere different than they started, on here though I dont think they gel or flow as well as Happier Than Ever the song did, or when other artists do two part songs that are easier to do a edit from either part or trimmed down across the entire song from a pop perspective, but I can see how they’re enjoyed by the crowd that take this album as a more artistic project and appreciate the production a bit more IYKWIM. the way some people are hyping this up sets a bit of a high expectations that I was just a bit whelmed by on first listen. That being said there are a few more traditional and punchier/more catchy tracks here (Lunch and Birds Of A Feather in particular which I think are the standouts from that perspective and put the ‘HARD’ in the album hitting Hard and Soft, LOL in the way they both have a really catchier groove to them as a song compared to some of the other tracks that seem to meander a bit, or you can barely hear what Billie is singing about. On Birds she is really flexing the vocals apart from the usual whisper/mumble singing she does on a lot of tracks for instance.

ChIhiro gets going but it takes a while to get there). Lunch gives a bit of Bad Guy kinda groove vibes. It also reminds me a little in some ways of like Madonna’s Ray Of Light album, which is highly critically acclaimed but also a trend I personally noticed in Madonna’s albums from RoL through to COADF was that most with some exceptions of Her singles I felt from them were the more radio friendly songs (although album version of Frozen is 6 minutes OTOH) compared to some more experimental or adventurous structure and sound/lyrical choices on many of the album tracks I thought, and on RoL where Madonna lyrically was a bit of producer William Orbit’s muse to his production, as you could say Billie is to Finneas with this, but thats a bit of a tangent.

Back to the multipart songs, I thought some of them had some interesting ideas but it was a bit scattershot, The last autotuned part of Lamour De Ma Vie and the First part of Blue could’ve done being slightly longer than the minute or so they got perhaps to flesh out maybe someone can whip up an edit extended mix or something.
TLDR if you’re looking for the punchy pop songs, grab Lunch and Birds off this into a mix is my tip, OTOH if you like being in the mood to explore an album project thematically as a whole with the production, lyrics etc (in which also she does cover a few similar topics as the previous album), chuck the whole thing on for a listen.
