Especially not getting enough credit for her rhythm guitar work. She tends to be acknowledged as a singer, both backing up Saiki and doing her own songs like Sayonakidori. And of course for doing Magic Spell Time during the breaks in performances. But her rhythm guitar work is easily overlooked when Misa, Akane and Kanami are all playing.

Yes, they are growing in talent, writing and performance. The growth shows by the massive size of this crowd. A few years ago, when I heard this song I thought it would be a great arena rocker. It makes me happy for them that they are now playing this in an arena. Though I do love the intimate shows we got in the US.

Hell yeah, Miku is like Band Maid's Malcolm Young. She's crucial to the success of Kanami's lead work which is subtle and sometimes simplistic, but efficient and beautiful at the same time.

Thanks very much for highlighting Miku's rhythm guitar work. I was at the New York show (when they opened for The Last Rockstars) where her amp and/or pedalboard went down and the techs couldn't revive them, and the resulting sonic hole was huge and very evident. Of course, she handled it like a pro--with smiles, enthusiasm, and even a little kiss for Kanami.

When you have a lead bassist and a lead guitarist, you don't want to waste them. I guess Misa is glad she stayed with Band-Maid and didn't quit. Whoever back then told her to play the next performance and look at the audience and see if she still wanted to quit was very wise. Look at her audience now. She is in a band that appreciates her and wants her to shine.

I agree, it seems like they have limitless potential. It seems like they get better with each new album - and with Saiki reaching a new level with her vocal performance and doing a vocal/piano solo at this Yokohama show, it's clear they're still growing. It's bonkers to imagine that they might keep going for another 20+ years.

If you haven't seen them live yet, you owe it to yourself to see them live. I saw them live while they were in Seattle in 2022. First major concert and I'm glad Band Maid was my first major concert I've been to. The synergy between the band and crowd was electrifying. Also being so close to them a band I've admired for a few years left me in awe despite being unfortunate enough to find myself always being behind tall people in the crowd so I couldn't track anyone though I did have a bead on Akane a couple times and you could see how happy she was doing her thing. Regardless it was amazing being in the crowd. Live videos and studio albums doesn't do them justice with how amazing they are. Plus Band Maid is the band that helped me appreciate the different flavors each instrument and members adds to the mix because every member brings so much to their rolls and they ooze personality and passion. A live performance of Don't You Tell Me with the exchange between Misa and Kanami is what made me fall in love with the band seeing the joy on Misa's and Kanami's faces. I love Band Maid and hope to see them come back to Washington again sometime. But if you ever have a chance to see them. Do it

Yes: this is Yokohama Arena at the 10ant tour final. They had an audience that has been reported to be slightly larger than their Tokyo Garden Theater show from last Winter (8000). This show was designed to be a celebration of their ten years together. This concert was streamed live over Thanksgiving weekend (I got at 2:30 AM EST to watch this 3-1/2 hour show) and I can only say that they pulled out all the stops within their reach. Listen to that incredible backing track that has such a lifting atmosphere during the bass-guitar interlude. Happy. You can tell that the Maids are a band that exudes happiness. When Saiki marches down the ramp you can tell that she's energized by the crowd and absolutely thrilled to be right where she is. Every shot of Akane has her grinning ear to ear or looking over to her band mates sharing that joy. Miku is beaming with pride over her creation, know that she's going to surprise the band with her secret thank-you note at Omajinai Time. As Misa hops onto the riser to run across to Kanami you can see the excitement in her step. Kanami always seems to up her game whenever it is required: this bass guitar duel was an unexpected pleasure at this show and you can tell Kanami is pleased. The best thing is that you can tell that they are taking joy in each others happiness, that they truly are supportive of each other. The friendship is real.

Thanks for another brilliant reaction Chase ... always enjoy the depth of your analysis ... In your wrap-up where you discuss the potential in this band, the inertia that seems to be propelling them forward I think that force is fuelled by a combined and mutual lack of ego (if something can be fuelled by a "lack" of something else but you get my drift). They still have the innocence of pure enjoyment like a bunch of kids with a garage band that get their first gig and suddenly realise "hey!! .. people actually like us!!" 🙂

8:16 Oh yes.... Abso-f-in-lutely. Back in the day my buddy would drag me out to Eric Clapton concerts since he was a huge fan. No hardship. But he pointed out that if Clapton played Old Love, and then wove the american national anthem into it, most of the time he wasn't quite feeling it that particular night. And indeed, those concerts I've been to where he did that were just not as good, solos not as crisp and fresh, etc. Never had a bad Clapton concert, but you could definitely tell when he was into it and when not... Bands playing their heart out? Bring 'em on. No matter whether I actually like their music or not, but music played with passion is ALWAYS worth listening to.

Kanami, especially for me, sounds like she loves playing so much she'd go until her fingers fell off if the rest of them weren't there to bring her back to reality. I listen to a lot of music that I would call amazing, but it's rare for anyone to be so consistently able to blow my mind the way BAND-MAID does. EDIT: oops, I meant to drop in another recommendation for your long, long list: Calva Louise. I found out about them randomly last night and I really like 'em. They mix all sorts of genres and elements. Definitely some metal in there, even some extreme vocals, but then so is just about everything else. Very solid trio, very interesting musically.

Great reaction & analysis, Chase, as always! Stop me if u heard this already, but on the original studio version there's only a short Kanami solo, essentially the first 15 secs of the battle here. There's an iconic live video (on DVD) of this song from a 2017 show that was popular on YT, which I daresay gained B-M a lot of new fans-bc it also features a duet/battle between Kanami & Misa. That one is awesome. This new performance and recording blow the old one out of the water in every way, IMHO. Now that I've "liked" your vid, I'ma go check out John's.

Miku had to learn rhythm guitar, but she doesn't do things by halves. She has worked very hard, and is now better than Kanami at some rhythm guitar techniques -- Kanami has happily admitted it. This frees up Kanami to do Kanami things, while Miku keeps improving and doing more and more solid rhythm work. By the way, although I didn't come to Band-Maid on your channel, it played a role. I had watched "Freedom" live and wondered: Is this band talented, or are they just doing simple stuff that looks impressive to a non-musician? So I watched your reaction to "Freedom" -- because you are a musician -- and you pointed out how talented they were, and that they made the difficult look simple because they were so proficient. That confirmed my impression that Band-Maid was seriously talented -- it wasn't an illusion. I continue to be impressed with their talent, and often watch reactions by musicians to get that insider perspective from people who play an instrument, who have been on stage, who understand what Band-Maid is doing. I do notice how many musicians like and respect Band-Maid: guitarists, drummers, singers.

Go back to the original BAND MAID live version (5 years ago?) and you will see that the call and response is incorporated in the song. BAND MAID hasn't changed much, the fans have changed more. You watched their first video, THRILL, many years ago. They had talent back then - their confidence is what has grown - much more than their talent.
